Tamarkuz’s ‘Rivers’ Runs Through Godolphin Mile, Defending Champ Isolate Third

Todd Cady and Ty Leatherman's TWO RIVERS OVER (g, 4, Tamarkuz–American Cowgirl, by Cowboy Cal) closed resolutely to pip dueling leaders Walk of Stars (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Isolate (Mark Valeski) and win the $1-million G2 Godolphin Mile. Walk Of Stars was 3/4 of a length back in second, only a nostril in front of a very game Isolate. It was the first group win for the 2023 Listed Zia Park Derby winner.

Both defending Godolphin Mile winner Isolate and G2 Al Maktoum Classic second Walk of Stars flashed good early speed and that pair soon slugged it out on the front end with G1 Saudi Cup third Saudi Crown (Always Dreaming) sitting third and the eventual winner just off their heels with rivals to either side. Walk of Stars prevented Isolate from taking the inside path, and pressed that foe doggedly as they rounded the bend.

Edwin Maldonado gave Two Rivers Over a right-handed tap at the 600-metre mark and he soon edged closer with Saudi Crown to his immediate outside. Making ground with every stride after Saudi Crown folded, he closed resolutely on the leading pair down the lane, shifted to the outside for his attack and inched ahead to win well and give trainer Doug O'Neill his second winner of the race since sending out Grade I sire Spring At Last (Silver Deputy) to victory in 2007.

“He is not a horse that takes the kickback well so I was hoping he would be close in the run and he was,” said Maldonado. “When he came into the stretch I was confident I would get there because I had him in the clear, outside of kickback. He's very genuine. He gave me everything.”

Co-owner Cady said, “What an experience! We were happy to be a part of the occasion but we knew it would be hard to win with the likes of Saudi Crown and Isolate in the field. He was so tough and classy in the finish.

“What a job by Edwin and Doug and Leandro [Mora, assistant trainer]. We are so thrilled.”

Speaking from California, trainer O'Neill said, “I am so proud of this horse. The owners are the ones who picked him out to claim. They have been super-patient and supportive. He's a young 4-year-old on the rise.”

Winless from three starts at two, the bay was eventually claimed for $30,000 by O'Neill on behalf of his current connections at Ellis Park last June. After taking a starter allowance at Del Mar one start later in July, Two Rivers Over won a Del Mar optional claimer in September, prior to a two-length win going 1 1/16 miles in the Derby at Zia. He was most recently fourth in the GII San Pasqual S. to Newgrange (Violence).

Pedigree Notes:

Two Rivers Over's sire Tamarkuz  won the 2015 edition of this race in the Shadwell silks and, a year later, took the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Based first in Kentucky and then in Louisiana in 2022, Tamarkuz moved to Ballycroy Bloodstock in Ontario beginning in the 2023 season and he currently stands for C$4,000. His three stakes winners include Red Flag, successful in the GIII Bob Hope S., and stakes winner Lady Lottie.

The first foal for his winning dam, Two Rivers Over is also the only known produce for American Cowgirl. She, in turn, is a full-sister to MSW Special Relativity, who was second in the GIII Ontario Fashion S. and third in both the GI Ballerina S. and GII Bessarabian S.

Sovereign Prince Tops ERA HIT Sale At AED1.3M

Listed winner Sovereign Prince (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was the AED1.3-million (£283,981/€324,675/US$353,982) topper at the Emirates Racing Authority Horses-in-Training Sale on Tuesday.

Cazoo Derby Features Desert Crown Among 21 Remaining

Saeed Suhail's Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) anchors the 21 colts remaining at this entry stage for the G1 Cazoo Derby on June 4. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt is a perfect two-for-two after winning the G2 Dante S. at York on May 12. He is joined by the Godolphin duo of Listed Blue Riband Trial winner Nahanni (GB) (Frankel {GB}) and the stakes-placed Walk of Stars (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), both trained by Charlie Appleby. Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore partners have a quintet of colts still entered-Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who won the G3 Boodles Chester Vase S., G3 Amethyst S. runner-up Ivy League (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Listed Dee S. winner Star of India (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), G3 Derby Trial S. scorer Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and Listed SBK Derby Trial S. victor United Nations (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

One horse no longer taking part in the Epsom Downs Classic is Cash (Ire) (Shamardal), who finished second in the Listed bet365 Classic Trial at Sandown on Apr. 22.

Time To Walk The Walk

After the bombshell dropped by connections of Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) on Friday, the door to the Epsom Derby has been well and truly kicked open and suddenly, the quintet lining up for Saturday's Listed SBK Derby Trial at Lingfield have a clearer path to the Blue Riband. Godolphin's Walk of Stars (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is of obvious interest in the race in which the fellow Charlie Appleby-trained Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) met with defeat 12 months ago and he is equipped for it, being a descendant of the blue-hen Magnificient Style whose son Percussionist (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) took this in 2004. He followed Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in winning Newbury's 10-furlong Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup British EBF Conditions S. Apr. 17, but the two rivals he faced that day have subsequently dented the form. Appleby is keen to speed up his education.

“He has done a lot of his racing on conventional tracks, so we wanted to challenge him a bit more,” he said, referring to the Epsom-like terrain of this circuit.

Zechariah Has His Say

Aquis Farm and Manton Park's Zechariah (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire}) beat Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) convincingly in the Haynes, Hanson & Clark Conditions S. at Newbury in September and he is up markedly in trip having run sixth in the G3 Craven S. at Newmarket Apr. 13.

Trainer Martyn Meade admits that Guineas trial was the wrong direction to take. “He's doing everything right and I think you can put the Craven to one side, as that probably wasn't the right race to run him in,” he said of the grandson of the 2006 GI E. P. Taylor S. and GI Del Mar Oaks heroine Arravale (Arch).

Oaks Clues In Abundance

Naas stages the G3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Blue Wind S., with Moyglare Stud's Curragh maiden winner and 'TDN Rising Star' Eclat de Lumiere (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) taking on Takaya Shimakawa's Tosen Lydia (Ire) (The Gurkha {Ire}) and Ballydoyle's Dundalk Apr. 12 scorer Lily Pond (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in a fascinating tussle between three unbeaten fillies. While the runners are entering the stalls, the winner of Lingfield's Listed SBK Oaks Trial will be coming back in and who is to say, after a 100% week at Chester, that it won't be Aidan O'Brien in the headlines again with the Apr. 25 Naas maiden winner Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). The daughter of Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) has a similar profile to her relative Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) at this stage of her career and has enticed Ryan Moore away from Ireland.

A Bargain Buy?

Shadwell opted to sell the unraced Rogue Millennium (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) for just 35,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale and that is already looking like a golden ticket after The Rogues Gallery's descendant of the legendary Doff the Derby won the same Wetherby novice on Apr. 24 which in 2021 was contested by Loving Dream (GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) and this race's winner Sherbet Lemon (Lemon Drop Kid).

Trainer Tom Clover will be hoping she can “do a Makfi” and prove one that slipped through the net. “You'll ask her and she finds for you and it's hard to know how much is there,” he said.
