Friday’s Stronach 5 Wager Features $76,823 Carryover

The weekend will begin with a bang Friday with a rare carryover in the Stronach 5 of $76,823.80.

The popular wager will feature a low 12-percent takeout and races from Laurel Park, Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park and Golden Gate Fields.

The Stronach 5 begins with Laurel Park's very competitive eighth race, a maiden special weight event for 2-year-olds at seven furlongs.

Figlio Del Re, a son of Galileo trained by Graham Motion, draws the rail, and makes his second career start after finishing a well-beaten eighth at Belmont Park Sept. 18 on the turf. The winner of the Sept. 18 race, Slipstream, came back to win the Futurity (G3) Oct. 10 at Belmont while the second-place Futurity finisher, Run Curtis Run, had won the Rick Violette Stakes earlier in the summer at Saratoga.

Trainer Michael Trombetta will saddle two in the Laurel eighth. Caminero, a son of Lord Nelson, will be making his debut while Souper Royal Moon comes off a seventh-place finish in his debut. Trainer Jose Corrales will saddle Backnthewoods coming off a fourth-place finish against similar company Sept. 17 at Belmont.

Santa Anita's third race, a $50,000 maiden claiming event for California-bred or sired horses 3-year-olds and up going six furlongs, is wide-open. What an Idea, a son of Shackleford, makes his debut for trainer Peter Miller and jockey Flavien Prat. Devil Be Me returns after a seventh-place finish in his debut Sept. 24 at Los Alamitos and Straus's Place makes his second start after finishing fifth, beaten only 2 ¾ lengths, Sept. 12 at Las Alamitos.

The Stronach 5 heads to Gulfstream for its ninth race, a claiming event at 1 1/16 miles on the Tapeta. It's been two years and 23 starts since Gran Malbec has visited the winner's circle, but the tough 6-year-old enters this race after finishing second by a neck last time out on this surface. Til the End rallied last out on the Tapeta to finish fifth, beaten only 1 ½ lengths for the win. Golden Decision will also be running late for trainer Gustavo Delgado and jockey Cristian Torres.

Laurel's ninth race, an allowance optional claiming event at 5 ½ furlong on the turf, brings together another competitive group. Hugh McMahon saddles Rohrbacher, who has finished first, second or third in 10 of his last 12 starts and 10 of 11 starts at the distance and surface. Charmed, trained by Philip Antonacci, comes into the race off a victory against allowance company at Monmouth Sept. 26 at the distance and on turf.

The Stronach 5 concludes at Golden Gate Fields with its third race, a starter allowance at 1 1/16 mile. Anitanewmercedes goes for his third consecutive victory while Baby Frankie goes for his second consecutive win. Iz Invincible has been a model of consistency, finishing first, second or third in 10 of his last 13 starts for trainer and co-owner William Delia. The gelding reeled off four consecutive victories at Golden Gate earlier in the year.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Flying Close To The Edge: Gambling Drone Operators Fighting For Their Rights In UK

Self-described professional gambler Michael McCool is engaged in an ongoing battle with racing authorities over his use of drones to gain an advantage on in-race betting on horse racing, reports wired.co.uk. The footage of races used in betting shops has a built in delay due to broadcast technology, so McCool's ability to reduce that latency gives him an advantage of up to three seconds over most bettors.

Racecourse operators are concerned about both the safety of the race participants and the integrity of the betting product.

“There is no way to know where, and by whom, such broadcasts are being used,” a spokesperson for Arena Racing Company, which runs 16 horse racing courses and two greyhound tracks, told Wired. “In an environment when gambling and gambling controls are under significant scrutiny, it cannot be right that these operators dronehave such a simple way to exploit the loopholes and potentially expose the vulnerable to unlicensed routes to betting. Furthermore, it creates significant concern for all sports and live events over their ability to stage events and control their own business, into which they will have invested millions of pounds.”

The UK's Gambling Commission examined in-race wagering in September of 2016, but determined it wasn't an institutional problem for the industry: “In-play betting does not appear to generate specific additional risks to the licensing objectives as long as betting customers are sufficiently aware of their position and the respective positions of other players and the betting operators. We do not consider it necessary to intervene to prevent some players using technology to gain an advantage in terms of speed of information, provided it is clear to all players that this can be done.”

McCool argues that the advantage he gains via drone footage is part of what makes him a professional gambler.

“It's all about what edge you can get,” McCool told Wired. “You need an edge. You can't class yourself as a professional gambler if you've not got an edge. If you haven't got an edge, you're just a gambler; somebody betting on bingo and Peruvian netball.”

FOX Sports To Present Live Coverage Of Saturday’s British Champions Day

The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today announced it has partnered with FOX Sports to present live coverage and analysis of QIPCO British Champions Day from historic Ascot Racecourse in Ascot, England.

Saturday's special broadcast of Great Britain's richest race day will air on FS2 from 8 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Eastern, and feature four classic Group 1 turf races, headlined by the £1.1 million Queen Elizabeth II, sponsored by QIPCO, and the £1.2 million QIPCO Champion.

Post time for the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II, sponsored by QIPCO, for 3-year-olds and up going 1 mile set will be 10:10 a.m.; with the Group 1 QIPCO Champion for 3-year-olds and up at 10 furlongs set for 10:50 a.m.

Coverage will include two other Group 1 races, the £500,000 QIPCO British Champions Sprint for 3-year-olds and up at six furlongs at 9 a.m.; and the £500,000 QIPCO British Champions Fillies and Mares for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/2 miles (1 mile and 4 furlongs) scheduled for 9:35 a.m.

Two additional turf races will also be featured – the Group 2, £500,000 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup for 3-year-olds and up going 2 miles, which has a post time of 8:25 a.m.; and the broadcast's final race, the £200,000 Balmoral Handicap, sponsored by QIPCO, for 3-year-olds and up at 1 mile. Post time for the Balmoral Handicap is 11:30 a.m.

Five Competitive Races Comprise Friday’s Stronach 5 Wager

Five competitive and interesting races from Laurel Park, Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita Park will comprise Friday's Stronach 5.

The coast-to-coast action begins at approximately 4:27 ET and features a low 12-percent takeout.

The Stronach 5 begins in Maryland with Laurel's eighth race, an allowance event on the turf for fillies and mares going 1 1/8 mile. Follow the Flag, a 3-year-old filly by Tapit out of the Grade 1 winning mare, Mushka, returns after a six-month layoff for trainer Michael Matz. Runaway Monet, who broke her maiden by 9 ¾ last time out for trainer Rodney Jenkins, hopes to try the turf for the first time after having three previous starts on the grass moved to the main track.

Next up is Gulfstream's eighth race, an allowance optional claimer at six furlongs for state breds with a dozen entered including Vinnie Van Go, who has been claimed in seven of his last eight starts. The gelding will be saddled Friday by Saffie Joseph Jr. Vinnie Van Go is one of six horses in the race claimed from its previous start. Katie's Cowboy goes out first time for Kent Sweezey, Frenchmen Street for Elizabeth Dobles and Gangly for Jose D'Angelo.

The third leg of the sequence returns to Laurel and its ninth race, a maiden claiming events at six furlongs for 2-year-olds. Bust'em Kurt is the 7-5 favorite for leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez after a pair of seconds against maiden special weight company. Divining Stone, a son of Divining Rod, makes his debut for Arnaud Delacour as does Off Course, a son of Speightster, for Jeremiah O'Dwyer.

The Stronach 5 heads west for the final two legs of the sequence. Santa Anita's third race, a claiming event for fillies and mares at six furlongs on the turf, has a field of nine including Mind Meld, making his third start off the layoff for trainer Mike Puype and dropping from $50,000 claiming company. Sweet Devil gets blinkers for trainer Michael McCarthy. Miss Tokyo makes her first start since June of 2020 for Leonard Powell. Acai has placed in two of three starts across the dirt for Doug O'Neill, and New Drama has done the same for Tim Yakteen.

Santa Anita's fourth race concludes the Stronach 5 with maidens 3-years-old and up going six furlongs on the main track. Sir Flatter draws the rail after closing strongly for second money last time out at Los Alamitos. The full field may have to catch Try to Capture, who runs on or close to the pace in his first two starts for trainer Peter Miller. Fenestra returns to the races off a 16-month layoff for trainer Vladimir Cerin. Fenestra, a son of Street Sense, is out of the graded stakes-placed mare Curlina.
