Grants Pass Downs Reports Significant Handle Increase; Over $2.2 Million Wagered On Summer Meet

Grants Pass Downs, Oregon's premier horse racing track, concluded its second commercial meet on July 8, following a four-week run of Tuesday and Wednesday racing. The summer meet, which began June 16, carded 78 races over nine dates and handled a total of $2,235,303, nearly quadruple the total amount from last year's non-commercial summer meet. The meet saw a dramatic jump in online and off-track betting, with nearly 94 percent of the meet's handle being driven by off-site betting – representing an astounding 859 percent increase from last summer's meet.

The horsemen and horsewomen received $619,511 in purse money on the season at an average of $68,835 per race day and $7,942 per race. Compared to summer 2019, average race day purses saw an increase of $38,863 – up 130 percent. Additionally, the track's field size jumped to an average 7.94 horses per race over last summer's 5.34 horses per race.

“This record-breaking meet shows that racing is alive and well in spite of COVID-19, and our success is a testament to the hard work put in by track staff, operations and facilities teams and the wonderful community of horsemen and women whose efforts made the meet possible,” said Randy Evers, President of Grants Pass Downs. “We are proud to be one of the few live sporting events on television while supporting the local Grants Pass economy.”

Once again, the meet's leading jockey was Kassie Guglielmino with 14 wins in 58 starts. Guglielmino, who also finished the 2019 fall commercial meet as Grants Pass Downs' top jockey, was followed by Taylor E. Smith (11 wins in 50 starts). Jorge Rosales was the meet's leading trainer with 12 wins and ten second place finishes in 37 starts, and Marjorie Avery finished atop the owner rankings with five wins and six second place finishes in 16 starts.

The meet's record handles were achieved despite limited crowd sizes. In response to the pandemic, Grants Pass Downs complied with the Governor's order to limit the number of nonessential people on site at 250 on racing days during the summer meet. It also made significant operational changes to align with guidance from the CDC and Oregon public health officials to ensure the safety of staff, participating horsemen, athletes, and stakeholders. Colonial Downs Increases Takeout Rates, Bumps Tuesday Post Time Due To Heat Wave

Colonial Downs in New Kent, Va. was scheduled to begin live racing on Monday, July 27, but a heat wave in the area forced that card to be rescheduled. On Tuesday, track officials decided to push post time back to 6:30 p.m., according to drf.com.

In addition, the Daily Racing Form reported that Colonial Downs has raised wagering takeout rates for its 2020 meet. The new rates will be as follows:

Win, Place, Show Wagers: 18 percent (2019: 16 percent)
Exotic Bets: 22 percent (2019: 20 percent)
Pick 5: eliminated (2019: 12 percent)

Colonial is racing on a Monday through Wednesday schedule this season, a change from last year's Friday to Sunday schedule. That places the track around a different set of competitors with higher takeout rates, explained John Marshall, executive vice president of operations.

“We felt like [Colonial's new rates] are still the most competitive in that set,” Marshall told the Daily Racing Form. “We just didn't feel the need to go super low this year.”

Saturday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot At Gulfstream Guaranteed For $900,000

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $900,000 Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the 13th consecutive racing program Friday, when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $41.08.

There will also be a Super Hi 5 carryover of $3,827.04.

The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

A mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 has been scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 2.

Saturday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 6-11 and will include the $60,000 Ana T Stakes in Race 9 and the $60,000 Mecke Stakes in Race 10.

Lady's Island will seek her ninth win in 10 starts while facing seven other fillies and mares as the 4-5 morning-line favorite in the six-furlong Ana T.

Multiple-stakes winner Galleon Mast is set to face a full field of 3-year-olds and up in the Mecke, a mile turf event, as the 5-2 morning-line favorite.

Stronach 5 Cancelled When Races Taken Off The Turf At Laurel, Gulfstream

The Stronach 5 for Friday, July 24 has been cancelled after three races at Laurel Park and one at Gulfstream Park were taken off the turf.

The popular wager with the $100,000 guaranteed pool and industry-low 12-percent takeout will return Friday, July 31.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.
