Curlin’s Honor Sires First Foal

Curlin's Honor (Curlin–Franscat, by Stormin Fever), a seven-figure 2-year-old auction purchase who went on to become a dual stakes winner and six times graded stakes placed, has sired his first foal, a chestnut filly out of Be All You Can Be (War Front), Pleasant Acres Stallions announced Tuesday.

“We're delighted to greet the first foal by Curlin's Honor, and this is an especially interesting one, as it's the first foal of a War Front mare closely related to Lines of Battle, War Flag and Civil Union,” said Pedigree Consultants' Alan Porter. “Curlin's Honor had a great reception in his first year at Pleasant Acres Stallions. Given his background–he's the fastest son of Curlin, with five clockings of 1:08 and change for six furlongs, and from the fabulous Tartan Farm family of Fappiano, Quiet American and nine other graded sires–we think he has a great shot of making it as a stallion. In fact, we are actively acquiring more mares to breed to him in 2022.”

Selling for $1.5 million at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic in 2017, Curlin's Honor banked $356,545 in his 17-race career and defeated Grade I winner Voodoo's Song (English Channel) in winning the Artie Schiller S. at Aqueduct in 2019. He entered stud at Pleasant Acres in 2021 and stands for $2,500.

Grade 1 Winner Voodoo Song To Enter Stud In Turkey

Voodoo Song, a Grade 1-winning turf miler and near-seven-figure earner, has been sold to begin his stallion career at Evcimen Stud Farm in Turkey, per the Turkish publication Yaris Dergisi.

The 6-year-old son of English Channel retired earlier this year with eight wins in 26 starts for earnings of $954,350. He raced as a New York homebred for Barry K. Schwartz's Stonewall Farm.

Voodoo Song saw his most successful campaign in 2018, where he led at every point of call to win the Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap and the listed Forbidden Apple Stakes. A year earlier, he won the G3 Saranac Stakes in similar front-running fashion, then he was caught at the wire to finish second in the G3 Commonwealth Derby.

Also of note during his racing career, he won four consecutive races at Saratoga (five total in two years), a feat previously achieved only by Hall of Famer Native Dancer, who had four consecutive wins in 1952.

Voodoo Song is out of the stakes-winning Unbridled's Song mare Mystic Chant, whose eight foals to race are all winners, also including stakes-placed Singapore Trader.

Last month, Voodoo Song went through the ring as a stallion prospect at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, where he finished under his reserve with a final bid of $95,000.

Voodoo Song Retired

Sheryl and Barry Schwartz’s Voodoo Song (English Channel -Mystic Chant, by Unbridled’s Song) has been retired from racing. Bred by Stonewall Farm, the six-year-old stallion prospect, who recorded his most important career victory in Saratoga’s 2018 GI Fourstardave H., retires with eight career wins and lifetime earnings of $954,350.

“There’s been a lot of great horses who have raced at Saratoga over the years, but if he can win six races in a row up here in two years, I’ve never heard of anything like that, except for Native Dancer [a Hall of Famer who won four races there in 1952 and was 6-for-6 at the Spa from 1952-54],” said Barry Schwartz. “You breed a lot of horses, and with each crop you hope you have a good one. It’s not that you’re surprised to get a good one. You’re thrilled that he’s grown into the kind of horse you can get excited about.”

During his sophomore season, the New York-bred defeated eventual 2019 Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar in the GIII Saranac S. and was runner up in the GIII Commonwealth Derby at Laurel.

Grade 1 Winner Voodoo Song Retired; Stallion Plans Pending

Sheryl and Barry Schwartz announce the retirement from racing of their homebred Grade 1 winner Voodoo Song, as they enter the process for his placement as a stallion prospect.

The New York-bred son of English Channel, captured his first Grade 1 win at a mile in the $500,000 Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga. Voodoo Song defeated four other Grade 1 winners in that race including Yoshida, Heart to Heart, Divisidero and Delta Prince.

Owner Barry Schwartz spoke of his love for speedy turf runners saying, “I love frontrunning grass horses. Everyone takes back in grass races. It's been the nature of grass racing and the world forever. I love those horses that go to the front and keep running.”

Though Voodoo Song was a speedy frontrunner, his tenacity was on full display.

“There's been a lot of great horses who have raced at Saratoga over the years, but if he can win six races in a row up here in two years, I've never heard of anything like that, except for Native Dancer (a Hall of Famer who won four races there in 1952 and was six-for-six at the Spa from 1952-54),” Schwartz said. “You breed a lot of horses, and with each crop you hope you have a good one. It's not that you're surprised to get a good one. You're thrilled that he's grown into the kind of horse you can get excited about.”

As a 3-year-old Voodoo Song defeated eventual 2019 Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar, who was only defeated twice in his career, as well as, Yoshida in the G3 Saranac.

Out of the stakes-winning mare Mystic Chant, by Unbridled's Song, Voodoo Song was bred in New York by Stonewall Farm, with lifetime earnings of $954,350.
