Forte 10-1 Individual Favorite in Pool 2 of Kentucky Derby Future Wager

Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Forte (Violence) was made the 10-1 individual betting favorite while the pari-mutuel field of “All Other Colts and Geldings” from the 2020 foal crop not listed within the 38 individual betting interests was tabbed as the heavy 3-5 choice.

The four-day pool, which features $2 Win and Exacta wagering, will open Thursday at noon (all times Eastern) and close Sunday at 6 p.m. Pool 2 will run concurrent with the lone Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager, where fans can bet horses sired by 39 individual stallions and an option for “All Others” that were not listed. Horses from the 2020 foal crop by Uncle Mo are the 4-1 morning line favorite followed by Violence (6-1), Arrogate (8-1) and Into Mischief (8-1). All Other Sires is listed at 6-1.

As was the case last year, Pool 2 will assume that horses under the care of trainers suspended from competing in the 2023 Kentucky Derby will not be under consideration. Instead, they are included within the pari-mutuel field. There are no refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager or Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager. Should Churchill Downs officials determine during the duration of this week's four-day pool that one of the wagering interests has experienced an injury, illness or other circumstance that would prevent the horse from participating in the Kentucky Derby or Oaks, betting on the individual horse will be suspended immediately.

More information, Brisnet.com past performances and real-time odds on the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, will be available before the pool opens Thursday online.

Friday BC Winners in Fine Form

All of the Friday Breeders' Cup winners came back in fine form, according to their respective trainers Saturday, topped by GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Forte (Violence).

“He's happy and proud of himself this morning,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “I thought he was more professional yesterday than he was when he won the [GI Claiborne] Breeders' Futurity here.”

Pletcher said Forte would get a little break–“not sure where”–and then look at a two-prep program from Pletcher's winter base at Palm Beach Downs in Florida leading up to the 2023 GI Kentucky Derby.

Mark Casse was still basking in the glow of Wonder Wheel's (Into Mischief) win in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

“I think the performance was amazing by Tyler [Gaffalione] and Wonder Wheel,” Casse said. “They were both dealt a tough hand. Things didn't go as planned. Obviously, we figured we would be up a little closer early. She didn't break running like she has in the past, and she just put in an amazing trip. With the spots that Tyler had to go through it was astonishing actually. Tyler can only do those things when he has a horse like her. I've been doing this for 40-something years. There's not a lot of awe moments, but that was an awe moment for me. She's a young horse that had to overcome a lot of adversities and she won with authority so I'm very proud of her, and proud of our entire organization.”

Casse reported that Wonder Wheel will ship out Sunday morning to spend the winter at his training facility in Ocala, Florida while they assess the next move for the filly.

The European runners, who swept Friday's turf races, were all reported to be in fine form as well.

Violence’s Forte Sweeps to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Win

All the pre-race hype swirled around the Bob Baffert trainee Cave Rock (Arrogate), however, it was Forte (c, 2, Violence–Queen Caroline, by Blame) who lived up to his name, besting a pair of Baffert runners to establish himself the early Kentucky Derby favorite with a win in the GI FanDuel Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland Friday. 2-5 favorite Cave Rock shot out to the lead early, wrestling 70-1 longshot Hurricaene J (Nyquist) into second as Forte assumed a slightly wide stalking position. As the pacesetter zipped through early splits, the GI Hopeful and GI Breeders' Futurity winner continued to bide his time in behind. Noticeably picking up the tempo while sweeping around the home turn, the Todd Pletcher trainee overtook Cave Rock midstretch and spurted clear, crossing the wire two lengths in front. Fellow Baffert trainee National Treasure (Quality Road) rounded out the trifecta. Final time for the 1 1/16-mile test was 1:43.06. Lifetime Record: 5-4-0-0, $1,755,150. Violence’s Forte Comes Out on Top of Breeders’ Futurity Battle

'TDN Rising Star' Forte (Violence) launched a powerful move on the far turn, outbattled fellow 'Rising Star' and ultra-game pacesetter Loggins (Ghostzapper) and survived an objection in a thrilling renewal of Keeneland's 'Win and You're In' GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity.

The last-out GI Hopeful S. winner, who was further flattered when third-place finisher and 'Rising Star' Blazing Sevens (Good Magic) resurfaced to take the GI Champagne S., sat a good trip in seventh in this first foray around two turns as runaway Churchill Downs debut winner and highly regarded 3-2 favorite Loggins was hounded on the inside through fractions of :22.94 and :46.36.

Forte, off at odds of 4-1, was shifted out four wide on the far turn and looked like he was on his way to a runaway victory with a sweeping blitz as they approached the short stretch. Loggins and jockey Florent Geroux, however, just kept on battling along the rail while Forte's rider Irad Ortiz, Jr. kept that foe in very tight quarters. After appearing to brush in deep stretch, Forte wanted it just a little bit more and fought his way to a well-earned neck victory. It was a long way back to longshot Red Route One (Gun Runner) in third. Geroux's claim of foul was disallowed by the stewards.

Forte, a runaway debut winner at Belmont May 27, was a disappointing fourth as the favorite in Saratoga's GIII Sanford S. July 16. He got back on track with a three-length tally at 6-1 in the slop in the seven-furlong Hopeful at the Spa Sept. 5.

“At the turn, he was still figuring it out,” Ortiz, Jr. said. “He's a young horse, and I had to start working really hard on him. He started doing it little by little, but by the time I got there and hit the lead he started acting a little green and laying in a little bit. I had to take a big hold of him the whole stretch. He didn't even let me ride him that well. The whole time I had to hold him and, that horse inside of me, take care of him at the same time as I win the race.”

Geroux added, “It was a good race. I got squeezed a little at the eighth pole. [Forte] came in a little bit on me and my horse was shifting, and I think it cost me the win.”

Pedigree Notes:

Forte, a $110,000 KEESEP yearling purchase, is one of six Grade I winners for Violence, who is also responsible for 39 stakes/14 graded winners. Both Forte and runner-up Loggins are out of mares by Blame. Winning owners Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable, partners on GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner and young Spendthrift Farm stallion Vino Rosso (Curlin), teamed up on 31 yearlings for $12.84 million at last month's Keeneland September sale. Forte's dam Queen Caroline was purchased by Amy Moore of South Gate Farm for $170,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September sale. The mare went on to win four stakes in Moore's colors before becoming one of the Virginia farm's first broodmares. Forte is the mare's first foal. She has a yearling colt by Uncle Mo, who brought $850,000 from Mayberry Farm at Keeneland September. She was bred to Not This Time for 2023. This is the extended female family of champion 2-year-old filly Folklore (Tiznow).
