The Friday Show: Hall Of Fame Slam Dunks … And One Notable Miss

In a busy news week – the aftermath of Saturday's Kentucky Derby and a look ahead to the May 15 Preakness Stakes – the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame unveiled its 2021 class of inductees: seven-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and 13-time champion steeplechase trainer Jack FIsher.

In this week's edition of the Friday Show, publisher Ray Paulick, news editor Chelsea Hackbarth and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills touch on those inductees and look ahead to the list of potential candidates for the 2022 Hall of Fame ballot – and Ray has a meltdown over one 2021 candidate who did not get enough votes for induction.

In his weekly Toast to Vino Rosso, Joe introduces us to another first-crop foal sired by Spendthrift Farm's Breeders' Cup Classic-winning son of Curlin. Finally, the team congratulates the ageless John Velazquez in our Star of the Week segment for his victories in the Kentucky Oaks and Derby and his ongoing commitment to his fellow riders through his work with the Jockeys' Guild and as a newly appointed member of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's standing committee on racetrack safety.

Toast To Vino Rosso: Filly Out Of Shaken ‘Gets Better Every Day’

Throughout the breeding season, the Paulick Report will be sharing photos of foals from the first crop of Spendthrift Farm's Breeders' Cup Classic winner Vino Rosso in the “Toast to Vino Rosso” series.

This time around, we're looking at a filly out of the Grade 2-placed Uncle Mo mare Shaken.

This filly was born on Feb. 7, bred in Kentucky by Mark Stansell and boarded at Waggoner Farm in Lexington.

“She's exceptional,” Stansell said last week. “I just flew in from Texas, and we'll be carrying her home tomorrow. She's a very exceptional filly. It seems like every day, she gets better.”

The filly is the second foal out of Shaken, whose family includes Grade 2-placed Sway Away and Grade 3-placed Knights Cross.

Stansell said the decision to send Shaken to Vino Rosso wasn't complicated. He expected the way the stallion proved himself on the racetrack would make his foals commercially attractive.

“Vino Rosso was a champion,” he said. “He's going to be very commercially sought-after horse. If you have a good individual, he was made on the track, so I expect his foals will be well-received this November.”

Vino Rosso, a 6-year-old son of Curlin, stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $25,000.

Vino Rosso won won six of 15 starts and earned $4,803,125 on the racetrack. In addition to his signature Breeders' Cup Classic score, the stallion picked up victories in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita Stakes, and the G2 Wood Memorial Stakes.

Toast To Vino Rosso: Filly Out Of Twisted Adage Adds To Sire’s Growing Reputation

This time around, we're taking a look at a filly from the first crop of Vino Rosso out of the Hard Spun mare Twisted Adage.

This filly was born on Feb. 25 at St. Simon Place in Lexington, Ky., bred by Robert Slack.

Tommy Wente boards the filly and her dam at St. Simon Place for the breeder, and he said Slack is a fan of the cross between Curlin and Hard Spun. As a son of Curlin, Vino Rosso fit the bill for the mating.

The ensuing foal got rave reviews from visitors, and as Wente asked around to others with Vino Rosso foals on the ground, he found he was far from alone in being happy with what they had.

“I said, 'Robert, this is just a fantastic filly. She's really nice,'” Wente said, recalling a discussion with the breeder. “She kept growing and growing, and he asked me which one's my favorite baby out there, and I said, 'It's gotta be the Vino Rosso, hands down.' Then, I started hearing more and more about the Vinos, and it seemed like everyone's getting good ones. You see pictures online, and they're all the same way. He's just really stamping his babies.”

Vino Rosso, a 6-year-old son of Curlin, stands at Spendthrift Farm for an advertised fee of $25,000.

The Friday Show: Adding An Asterisk To An Arkansas Derby Winner

It's been almost a year since Bob Baffert-trained Gamine and Charlatan won races at Oaklawn – Gamine in an allowance race and Charlatan in a division of the Grade 1, $1-million Arkansas Derby – and then subsequently were disqualified when post-race drug tests detected the prohibited drug lidocaine.

Those disqualifications were appealed, as was a 15-day suspension given Baffert by the Oaklawn board of stewards. Earlier this week after a two-day hearing, the Arkansas Racing Commission voted unanimously to restore the horses' wins, eliminate Baffert's suspension and instead fine him $5,000 for each positive.

Paulick Report editor-in-chief Natalie Voss, who viewed the 15-hour proceedings online and reported on the commissioners' vote, joins Ray Paulick in this week's Friday Show to discuss the case and the challenges made by the Hall of Fame trainer and his attorneys to the drug testing process and stewards' rulings.

Bloodstock editor Joe Nevills then joins Ray to highlight our Star of the Week as well as make his Toast to Vino Rosso and one of the first-crop foals sired by the Breeders' Cup Classic-winning son of Curlin.
