Longshot Look Presented By Kentucky Downs: Ringing Up A Big Price

Monday's Labor Day card during the FanDuel meet at Kentucky Downs brings with it another chance to play America's richest meet, and the Paulick Report is back with another Longshot Look video segment.

For each card of the six-day meet, J.D. Fox of the Champagne and J.D. Show will single out a price play with his reasoning for what makes the horse worth a look when they might go overlooked.

On Monday's card, Fox has his eye on a runner in Race 9, the Aristocrat Juvenile Fillies Stakes, going a mile over Kentucky Downs' unique turf course. His pick will be making a surface switch after winning on debut over the dirt at Ellis Park, which means the filly could offer value at 12-to-1.

Kentucky Downs' 2021 meet takes place Sept. 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, and 12. First post each day is at 12:20 p.m. Central.

The Friday Show Presented By Monmouth Park: Disgust In Delaware

When the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission reduced a two-year suspension to just 60 days for trainer Amber Cobb, found by Delaware Park's board of stewards to have “demonstrated cruelty to a horse in her care,” the Paulick Report was besieged with messages of outrage and disgust from a wide array of people in Thoroughbred racing.

“I feel so sick,” one trainer commented after watching the video that accompanied Paulick Report editor-in-chief Natalie Voss' story on the appeals hearing that led to the reduction of Cobb's suspension. “That girl should never, ever be allowed near another horse. … I can't remember watching a video I was more shocked at seeing ever in my life.”

In this week's edition of the Friday Show, Voss joins publisher Ray Paulick to try and explain the unexplainable; namely, why the Delaware racing commissioners refused to support their stewards and reduced Cobb's suspension so dramatically. The commission was led by chairman  W. Duncan Patterson Jr., who praised Cobb during the hearing for being “articulate,” adding, “You were an excellent witness.” Along with the praise for Cobb came criticism from the commission of the whistleblower who took the video and went to the stewards.

Bloodstock editor Joe Nevills joins Paulick to review this week's Woodbine Star of the Week, the 3-year-old Ontario-bred filly Il Malocchio, gutsy winner of last weekend's Bison City Stakes.

The Friday Show Presented By Monmouth Park: Conquest Daddyo Comes Home

Chances are if you've been to Woodbine racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, you've crossed paths with the entertainment and celebrity blogger/photographer who goes by the name of Mr. Will Wong on various social media platforms.

Will is an unabashed fan of Thoroughbred racing who began going to the track with his family at a very young age. Over the years, he's become friends with many of the men and women who care for the horses and he shares their passion for the animals.

Sarah Volpe, one of those friends, groomed a horse named Conquest Daddyo when he was trained by Mark Casse for the Conquest Stable. When the stable was dispersed in 2016, Volpe said goodbye to the Scat Daddy colt who the year before had won Woodbine's Grade 2 Summer Stakes and then finished fourth in the G1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Keeneland.

After he was sold, Volpe and Wong watched with concern as Conquest Daddyo began a long slide down the claiming ranks over the next several years, eventually winding up racing at the bottom level of bush tracks in Montana and Alberta, Canada. Will and Sarah reached out multiple times to the horse's connections in hopes that they might entertain an offer from them to buy Conquest Daddyo, retire him from racing, and bring him back to Ontario, where Sarah would once again be his caretaker. It's taken four years and lots of perseverance and network building, but they finally succeeded.

Will joins Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth on this week's Friday Show to talk about his experience. The story is told in greater detail at his website. Ray and Chelsea review the Queen's Plate performance by the Woodbine Star of the Week, Safe Conduct.

The Friday Show Presented By Monmouth Park: B. Wayne Hughes Remembered; Illinois Racing’s Future

Mark Toothaker, Spendthrift Farm's stallion sales manager, recalled a conversation he had with farm owner  B. Wayne Hughes just a few months ago after noticing that the 87-year-old visionary was still going full speed, working on new ideas and projects, while others his age might spend their time in a rocking chair, traveling or on hobbies.

“Wayne, what in the world?” Toothaker asked him. “Why do you want to keep doing what you're doing?”

“Mark, I've got so much that I want to accomplish but I've got so little time left,” Hughes told him. “So I don't have time to do anything but work.”

Toothaker joins Ray Paulick in this week's Friday Show to pay tribute to Hughes, who passed away on Wednesday while leaving an enormous legacy as a businessman, philanthropist, horseman and innovator.

In a second segment, Paulick speaks with trainer Chris Block, whose family has been breeding and racing horses at Arlington Park for a half century, about the future of Illinois racing should this be the suburban Chicago track's final year.

Olympic Runner, coming off a victory in the Grade 2 King Edward and looking ahead to the G1 Woodbine Mile, is this week's Woodbine Star of the Week.
