The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Horse Of The Year Talk

Brad Cox has two chances at Horse of the Year with Knicks Go and Essential Quality, the first and second betting choices on the morning line for Saturday's $6-million, Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

But there are other scenarios that could unfold in the world championships on Friday and Saturday, leaving the door open for others to sneak in with a chance to be voted North America's top Thoroughbred of 2021.

In this week's edition of the Friday Show, publisher Ray Paulick, bloodstock editor Joe Nevills and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth look at some of those possibilities in the event there is an upset in the Classic.

Each of them also offers one “price play” for the Breeders' Cup races

Breeders’ Cup Presents The News Minute: Scratches Change Complexion Of Turf

With the Thursday morning news that the top-class geldings Domestic Spending and United would be withdrawn from the $4-million Breeders' Cup Turf, the complexion of the mile and one-half Grade 1 race has changed, Ray Paulick reports in Thursday's Breeders' Cup News Minute.

Klaravich Stable's Domestic Spending, trained by Chad Brown, is a three-time G1 winner coming off a narrow defeat in the G1 Mr. D. Stakes (formerly the Arlington Million) at Arlington Park. LNJ Foxwoods' United, trained by Richard Mandella, scored a nose victory last out in the G2 John Henry Turf Championship at Santa Anita.

Inflammation was detected on a leg in both horses on Thursday morning.

The scratches permit Aidan O'Brien-trained Bolshoi Ballet and front-running Bill Mott trainee Channel Maker into the field.

Breeders’ Cup Presents The News Minute: Health And Safety Protocols

The horses competing in this year's Breeders' Cup world championships will have undergone the most rigorous pre-race scrutiny in the 38-year history of the event in an effort to ensure both the safest competition and a medication-free, level playing field for all participants from around the world.

Breeders' Cup officials conducted a press conference to outline some of those protocols that include out-of-competition testing, enhanced veterinary inspections, surveillance and extensive racetrack surface testing and maintenance.

Ray Paulick reviews some of those protocols in today's Breeders' Cup News Minute.

It's also worth noting that, after the 2020 championships were conducted without race-day Lasix for 2-year-olds, horses of all ages in this year's Breeders' Cup will compete without race-day administration of the anti-bleeder medication.

Breeders’ Cup Presents The News Minute: Good Trips From Bad Posts

With Estilo Talentoso being withdrawn from Saturday's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, that leaves the race with just five starters, led by defending champion and odds-on morning line favorite Gamine. This will be the smallest field ever assembled for a Breeders' Cup race in the event's 38 runnings. There have been fields as small as seven previously, in both the Sprint and Turf,  but this year's championships will have two races with shorter fields: the Filly & Mare Sprint and the Juvenile Fillies, which has only six entries.

In today's Breeders' Cup News Minute, Ray Paulick reviews some of the most disadvantageous post positions for various distances over the Del Mar racetrack layout. The review comes with the caveat that horses can overcome bad posts: witness Rushing Fall's win from post 11  in the 2017 Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar and Caledonia Road's win from post 12 in that year's Juvenile Fillies on dirt.

Paulick also has a local dining tip for a new Italian restaurant with roots in Cape Cod on the East Coast.
