Life-Saving Act At Emerald Downs: Marshall Allen Earns RTCA’s White Horse Award

A hero is a person who is admired for courage, outstanding achievements, and noble qualities.  There are heroes throughout the horse racing industry and the Race Track Chaplaincy of America (RTCA) recognizes these selfless servants annually through its RTCA White Horse Award.

This year's nominees were as follows:

  • Marshall Allen – Emerald Downs
  • Julie Berry – Blue Grass Farms Charities
  • Jonathan Estrada – Belmont Park
  • Nick Garafola & Veronica Gallardo – Belmont Park
  • Sebastian “Bas” Nichols – Ellis Park
  • Marvin Navas Prado – Ellis Park

The winner of this year's RTCA White Horse Award is Marshall Allen, who saved the life of a long-time owner at Emerald Downs.

On the morning of May 9, assistant trainer Marshall Allen was in the shed row walking to saddle a horse, when he observed a man collapse as he was walking by the barn. Without hesitation, Marshall dropped what he had in his arms and rushed to the scene.  The man who was in distress was long-time owner Jim Foulkes, a frequent visitor to the barn area. Marshall noticed the man's color turning blue and began to perform CPR.

Emergency Medical Technicians eventually arrived on the scene and took over; when they lost Foulkes heartbeat, they brought out the external defibrillator and urgently asked if anyone had a knife to cut open Foulkes shirt.  It was once again Marshall Allen who swiftly acted and pulled a knife from his pocket. Once Foulkes was stabilized, he was transported to the hospital. The prognosis at the time seemed dim, but later in the day they learned that Foulkes was on a respirator in a medically induced coma and was “hanging in there.” Prayers requests chains circulated the barn area and were sent to RTCA National.

By May 13, Foulkes was off of ventilator, breathing on his own and was making steady progress to recovery. On July 1, he was in the barn area and paid a visit to the Stenslie's barn to thank the man whose fast action saved his life.

I was told it was “a goosebumps moment” said MaryAnn O'Connell, Executive Director, Washington HBPA.  “Marshall was the perfect person to perform such a selfless act, putting himself aside”.

Due to Covid-19, the traditional White Horse Awards banquet were not able take place.  Therefore, Marshall and the other WHA nominees will be recognized at their respective locations by RTCA Chaplains and representatives.

Australia: Mastermind Of Wagering Club Ponzi Scheme Sentenced To Nine Years In Prison

On Friday, County Court Judge Douglas Trapnell sentenced Australian horse racing identity Bill Vlahos to nine years in prison for his role in leading a Ponzi Scheme that swindled investors out of $17,520,224, reports abc.net.au. Vlahos scammed 1,800 investors across 61 different syndicates out of their money by making them believe he had a statistical formula for picking winners.

Instead, Vlahos used the funds to bring additional individuals into the scheme as well as to fund his own extravagant lifestyle.

Vlahos initially faced 347 charges, but ultimately pleaded to two counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception.

“Through your pernicious greed and insatiable desire for personal affirmation, you destroyed the lives and financial security of your family, friends and associates,” said Judge Trapnell. “It is clear you must have known the impact you've had … yet you continued your deceptive scheme, unrelenting and unrepentant. The audaciousness of your behavior is breathtaking.”

Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: The Bryony Frost-Robbie Dunne Case

The British Horseracing Authority's disciplinary hearing of jumps jockey Robbie Dunne for prejudicial conduct and verbal abuse toward fellow rider Bryony Frost is the subject of this week's Friday Show.

Bloodstock editor Joe Nevills leads the discussion, with editor in chief Natalie Voss and news editor Chelsea Hackbarth offering their thoughts on the case in which Dunne has been accused of using abusive, physically threatening and misogynistic language against Frost on multiple occasions.

Frost, 26, is Britain's most successful female jockey. By bringing to the BHA the complaint against Dunne – whose tirades were said to be witnessed by others – Frost said she has felt abandoned and isolated by fellow riders, saying, “I wouldn't wish it on anyone.” She also testified that the culture within horse racing makes it difficult for anyone to file complaints against others.

Dunne faces up to a three-year ban if found guilty of the charges against him.

Also in this final edition of the Friday Show for 2021, Canadian legend Pink Lloyd has been named Woodbine's Star of the Week following his stirring victory in his career finale in last week's Kennedy Road Stakes at the Toronto, Ontario, track.

Friday Show Presented by Woodbine: Paulick Report’s Turkey Awards

So many turkeys. So little time.

With the Thanksgiving Day holiday upon, it's time to reflect on the many blessings we have in our lives. Family and friends. The roof over our heads. The food on our table. The dollars in our advance deposit wagering account.

At the Paulick Report, it's also when we recognize achievements by the horses, people and events that make our industry so interesting, engaging and, sometimes, infuriating. It's time for the occasionally annual Paulick Report Turkey Awards.

We had an abundance of candidates this year, all of which went through a careful screening process by a blue-ribbon committee that, in keeping with the spirit of the horse industry's lack of transparency, will go nameless. We won't divulge the process by which the Turkey Award winners were selected, either. After all, it's horse racing.

So without further ado, publisher Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills bring you this year's Turkey Awards and offer our apologies in advance to both the winners and runners-up.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.
