Queen’s Plate News Minute Presented By CTHS Ontario: Focusing On The Favorites On Race Day

All the preparation is complete for the 163rd running of the Queen's Plate at Woodbine. All that's left to do is put them in the gate, and see which horse comes out on top.

On this episode of the Queen's Plate News Minute, bloodstock editor Joe Nevills takes a look at the two morning line favorites in first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown: dominant Woodbine Oaks winner Moira, and Grade 3 Marine Stakes winner Rondure.

Trainer Kevin Attard discusses his plans to keep Moira's attitude in check after she acted out in the paddock before the Woodbine Oaks and lost both of her hind shoes. She caused even more commotion after the race when she backed into the shrubs surrounding the stakes winner's circle.

Rondure enters the Queen's Plate off a longer rest than most, and trainer Katerina Vassilieva explained how she kept the colt sharp during his time between races. She also discusses the reasoning behind bringing in Saratoga-based jockey Flavien Prat to ride Rondure in the Queen's Plate.

Post time for the Queen's Plate is at 5:47 p.m. Eastern. The 1 1/4-mile race, restricted to Canadian-breds is contested over Woodbine's all-weather Tapeta surface.

Queen’s Plate News Minute Presented By CTHS Ontario: Horse Meets Jockey

The field is set for Sunday's 163rd running of the Queen's Plate at Woodbine, but there is still plenty of time to make introductions.

On this episode of the Queen's Plate News Minute, bloodstock editor Joe Nevills chats with two jockeys who will be riding their mounts for the first time in competition during the Queen's Plate: two-time Plate winner Luis Contreras aboard Shamateur, and Antonio Gallardo aboard Causin' Mayhem.

Each jockey discusses what they've learned about their Queen's Plate assignments leading up to the race, and the methods they use to assess horses when they don't have experience with them in the saddle.

The Queen's Plate will take place Sunday, Aug. 21 at Woodbine, with an estimated post time at 5:47 p.m. Eastern.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Will Another Filly Win 163rd Queen’s Plate?

The Queen's Plate, Canada's oldest horse race and North America's oldest continuously run race, was first contested in 1860. It was known as the King's Plate before Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1952.

To celebrate and handicap Sunday's 163rd running of the Plate from Woodbine in Toronto, Ontario, Canadian horse racing journalist and handicapper Jennifer Morrison shares her knowledge of the mile and a quarter race with Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick as this week's special Friday Show guest.

Morrison has seen every Queen's Plates since first attending in 1981 and was a member of Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield's staff when Kinghaven Farms' Izvestia won the 1990 Plate en route to a sweep of the Canadian Triple Crown and his native country's Horse of the Year honors.

Thirty-seven fillies have won the Plate, and this year's edition is led by the Ghostzapper filly Moira, 10 3/4-length winner of the Woodbine Oaks in her most recent start on July 24. She'll have her work cut out against the likes of Grade 3 Marine Stakes winner Rondure, speedsters Ironstone and Causin' Mayhem, and stretch-running Hall of Dreams.

Queen’s Plate News Minute Presented By CTHS Ontario: The American Invaders

The $1-million Queen's Plate is the top race for Canadian-born 3-year-olds, but it's also highly coveted by connections south of the border.

In this first edition of the Queen's Plate News Minute, Paulick Report bloodstock editor Joe Nevills visited the Saratoga barns of the two U.S.-based trainers with probables for the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.

Mark Casse, a two-time Queen's Plate winner with a perennially strong Canadian presence, will send Plate Trial Stakes winner Sir for Sure and runner-up Hall of Dreams to Sunday's race. The colts have taken a unique path to the race, having wintered over the new all-weather Tapeta surface at Gulfstream Park – the same brand of footings that comprise Woodbine's main track.

Todd Pletcher plans to send Causin' Mayhem to Woodbine after finishing third in the Plate Trial. The colt will be the only horse in the Queen's Plate field to ship in for the race, and Pletcher discussed how he thinks the trip will sway his performance.

The Queen's Plate will take place Sunday, Aug. 21 at Woodbine, with an estimated post time at 5:47 p.m. Eastern.
