Longshot Look Presented By Kentucky Downs: Serving Up A Price On Saturday’s Card

The Fanduel Meet at Kentucky Downs is underway, featuring some of the nation's largest purses and field sizes, and one of the most attractive wagering menus on the racing calendar. The Paulick Report's Longshot Look will help you get the most out of one of North America's premier turf meets.

For each card of the seven-day meet, J.D. Fox will single out a price play with his reasoning for what makes the horse worth a look when they might go overlooked.

On Saturday's card, J.D. will spotlight a colt in Race 8, the one-mile Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Stakes, who showed a lot in his debut earlier this summer at Ellis Park, even if it wasn't a winning effort.

If his top pick doesn't make the gate, J.D.'s “Scratch Saver” pick comes in Race 9, a 6 1/2-furlong allowance optional claiming race, where he will focus on #4 Ride the Plan.

Ride the Plan posted back-to-back dominant victories going six furlongs on the dirt at Hawthorne Race Course and Colonial Downs heading into Saturday's race, where he tries turf for the first time. Dam Capital Plan was a multiple graded stakes winner on turf in California. He should sit right off the leaders, and at morning line odds of 12-1, he could provide plenty of value in what figures to be a full field.

Kentucky Downs' 2022 meet takes place Sept. 1, 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, and 14. First post each day is at 12:25 p.m. Central, except for the Saturday, Sept. 10 card, which features a special start time of 11:30 a.m. Central.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Tracking Off-Track Thoroughbreds

There are just a few weeks to go before this year's edition of the Retired Racehorse Project's Thoroughbred Makeover, a training competition which brings together off-track Thoroughbreds in their first year of their new careers.

Last week, the RRP released its annual report with statistics on this year's entrants. Although most people know the RRP for its work with its signature event, it also maintains and tracks information about the horses coming off the track and aiming for the Makeover each year — ages, bloodlines, number of racing starts, earnings, and more.

One of the biggest challenges in Thoroughbred aftercare is tracing horses as they leave the racetrack. We wanted to know — what can the stats on Makeover entries tell us about retiring horses?

Kristen Kovatch Bentley, communications manager for RRP, joins us on this week's Friday Show to talk about this year's numbers and what they mean.

Longshot Look Presented By Kentucky Downs: Finding Value On Thursday’s Opening Card

The Fanduel Meet at Kentucky Downs kicks off Thursday, Sept. 1., featuring some of the nation's largest purses and field sizes, and one of the most attractive wagering menus on the racing calendar. The Paulick Report is back with another season of Longshot Look to help you get the most out of one of North America's premier turf meets.

For each card of the seven-day meet, J.D. Fox will single out a price play with his reasoning for what makes the horse worth a look when they might go overlooked.

On Thursday's opening day card, Fox has his eye on a runner in Race 5, a 6 1/2-furlong allowance optional claiming race. J.D.'s pick returns to Kentucky Downs after a solid effort at the track in 2021, and at morning line odds of 12-1, his pick could reward backers nicely with a slight improvement in form.

In the event of inclement weather around Franklin, Ky., we've introduced J.D.'s “Scratch Saver” pick to increase the chances of the host helping you find a winner, whether they're a longshot or not.

Thursday's Scratch Saver comes in Race 9, the 1 mile and 70 yard Tapit Stakes. #3 Like the King hasn't won since last year's Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park, and fans might recognize him from the field of the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Like the King has been close in the past, and the only speed in Thursday's field has drawn inside. He should be close to the lead, and could get back on the winning track, and at 15-1 on the morning line, he could be another strong price play.

Kentucky Downs' 2022 meet takes place Sept. 1, 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, and 14. First post each day is at 12:25 p.m. Central, except for the Saturday, Sept. 10 card, which features a special start time of 11:30 a.m. Central.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Travers Day Is Upon Us

Saturday's 13-race card at Saratoga Race Course features six graded stakes, five of them Grade 1, topped by the $1.25 million Runhappy Travers Stakes, first staged in 1864 and to be contested for the 153rd time.

Highlight of the summer meet at the Saratoga Springs, N.Y., track, the Travers will be shown on FOX as part of a 90-minute telecast from 4:30-6:00 p.m. ET. The 11th race on the card, Travers post time is at 5:44 p.m.

In this week's Friday Show, publisher Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills discuss the role of the Travers as a stallion-making race and assess this year's field, which includes Rich Strike and Early Voting, respective winners of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, along with Epicenter, runner-up in both races as the betting favorite.

Nevills was on hand at Woodbine for last week's stunning performance by the filly Moira, who won Canada's most prestigious race, the Queen's Plate, beating male rivals handily by seven lengths. He shares his thoughts about the Plate winner along with what could be next for the daughter of Ghostzapper.
