Longshot Look Presented By Kentucky Downs: Charging Toward A Price On Saturday’s Card

The Fanduel Meet at Kentucky Downs is underway, featuring some of the nation's largest purses and field sizes, and one of the most attractive wagering menus on the racing calendar. The Paulick Report's Longshot Look will help you get the most out of one of North America's premier turf meets.

For each card of the meet, J.D. Fox will single out a price play with his reasoning for what makes the horse worth a look when they might go overlooked.

On Saturday's packed stakes card, J.D. will focus on a 12-1 shot in Race 5, the one-mile Grade 3 WinStar Mint Million stakes. His pick has been known to pull a pricy upset in the past, and he has had success over the unique Kentucky Downs course.

J.D.'s “Scratch Saver” pick comes in Race 10, the Grade 2 Kentucky Cup Turf Stakes, where he'll have an eye on #7 Admission Office.

The lightly raced 7-year-old gelding is in racing shape and has a win this year with jockey John Velazquez aboard. The 10-1 shot needs a clean trip through the field, but has one of the best closing kicks in the field.

Kentucky Downs' 2022 meet takes place Sept. 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, and 14. First post each day is at 12:25 p.m. Central, except for the Saturday, Sept. 10 card, which features a special start time of 11:30 a.m. Central.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Flightline’s Place In History

“This definitely qualifies as three old farts sitting around the campfire.”

In this week's edition of the Friday Show, spurred on by Flightline's 19 1/4-length victory in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic on Sept. 3, Paulick Report publisher Ray Paulick is joined by award-winning Turf writers Jay Hovdey (who coined the campfire comment) and Tim Wilkin to try and put some perspective on the John Sadler-trained Tapit colt's historic performance at Del Mar.

Hovdey, from Southern California, is a 2012 inductee to the Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Wilkin, honored with the Walter Haight Award from the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters in 2019, began covering the Saratoga race meet for upstate New York newspapers in 1980. Both have seen countless champions and breakout performances over the years.

“Anybody that watched that race whose jaw didn't drop to the floor watched the wrong race,” Wilkin commented. “Now the debate starts. Where is this horse in the all-time list?”

While Wilkin wants to see more racing from Flightline before putting him with the greatest horses ever, Hovdey suggests that the modern era may require us to look at a Thoroughbred's body of work differently than before.

“This is a horse who requires almost a confluence of the head and the heart to appreciate,” Hovdey said, “because from all angles he is doing things that only the greatest racehorses can do and he's doing them in a context that doesn't really satisfy traditional values.”

Longshot Look Presented By Kentucky Downs: Say Hello To A Price Play

The Fanduel Meet at Kentucky Downs is underway, featuring some of the nation's largest purses and field sizes, and one of the most attractive wagering menus on the racing calendar. The Paulick Report's Longshot Look will help you get the most out of one of North America's premier turf meets.

For each card of the meet, J.D. Fox will single out a price play with his reasoning for what makes the horse worth a look when they might go overlooked.

On Thursday's card, J.D. checks out a horse in Race 4, a 6 1/2-furlong allowance race for 2-year-olds that went through the ring at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale. His pick stepped up in a big way during his last start in Saratoga, and he could win on Thursday in a similar fashion.

J.D's “Scratch Saver” pick comes in Race 8, where he'll have an eye on #8 Wake Surf, who is 12-1 on the morning line.

Morning Surf was second off the layoff with a strong effort first up, almost wiring the field at long odds. He has tactical speed, but can also be in the lead if the pace is slow. Martin Garcia stays aboard.

Kentucky Downs' 2022 meet takes place Sept. 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, and 14. First post each day is at 12:25 p.m. Central, except for the Saturday, Sept. 10 card, which features a special start time of 11:30 a.m. Central.

Longshot Look Presented By Kentucky Downs: Making Money On A Makeup Day

The Fanduel Meet at Kentucky Downs is underway, featuring some of the nation's largest purses and field sizes, and one of the most attractive wagering menus on the racing calendar. The Paulick Report's Longshot Look will help you get the most out of one of North America's premier turf meets.

For each card of the meet, J.D. Fox will single out a price play with his reasoning for what makes the horse worth a look when they might go overlooked.

On Monday's makeup card for Sunday's rained-out races, J.D. will focus on a horse in Race 1, a 6 1/2-furlong claiming race. His pick has some back class at Kentucky Downs that could come in handy during his return visit.

J.D.'s “Scratch Saver” pick comes in Race 4, a 1 5/16-mile allowance, where he'll have his eye on #10 Setna the Wise.

This is an easier spot than his previous start in an optional claiming race at Saratoga, where this horse finished second going 1 1/8 miles on the turf. Senta the Wise should benefit from extra distance, and has ran twice on Good rated courses and held his own.

Kentucky Downs' 2022 meet takes place Sept. 1, 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, and 14. First post each day is at 12:25 p.m. Central, except for the Saturday, Sept. 10 card, which features a special start time of 11:30 a.m. Central.
