The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Track Announcer Chris Griffin On Parx Racing’s Big Day

The Founding Fathers met in Philadelphia from May to September 1787 to draft a Constitution that's been the guiding light for our country's democracy. Gouverneur Morris put the finishing touches on the document with a Preamble that begins, “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union …”

Two-hundred thirty-five years later, We the People – a colt by a sire named Constitution – heads to Parx Racing, just north of Philadelphia, to take on 10 other 3-year-olds in the Grade 1, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby. The Derby is the marquee event on the track's biggest card of the year: 13 races, five graded stakes that includes another $1 million fixture, the G1 Cotillion Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Parx Racing announcer Chris Griffin joins publisher Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills to analyze the Derby and Cotillion, with Griffin suggesting We the People may be the sleeper in the race as potentially the only speed horse in the line-up. So We the People could be much more than a hunch play for Constitutional  scholars.

A rising star in the announcer's booth, Griffin also talks about the journey that's had him calling races in California, Oregon, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, and New York. You can follow him on Twitter at @Inthegrandstand.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Dawn Lupul Handicaps Super Saturday

Dawn Lupul, who spent 10 years as the on-air analyst and simulcast host for Woodbine, joins publisher Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills on this week's Friday Show to look at the four Super Saturday graded stakes at the Toronto, Canada, racetrack.

The big event on Saturday – one of three Grade 1 stakes – is the CAN$1-million Ricoh Woodbine Mile, which has attracted a field of 11. Morning-line favorite is Godolphin's Irish-bred Modern Games, the only 3-year-old in the field and who comes off a second-place finish to highly rated, undefeated Baaeed in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood July 27.

Modern Games may be best remembered by North American racing fans as the horse who was mistakenly scratched from the 2021 Breeders' Cup Juvenile, then ran (and won) for purse money only.

Lupul points out that Charles Appleby, trainer of Modern Games, has sent seven runners to Woodbine to compete in Grade 1 races since 2017, and that five of them have won. Two of those wins came last year on the same day when he swept the two Super Saturday Grade 1 races for 2-year-olds, the Pattison Summer Stakes and the Johnnie Walker Natalma (for fillies). Appleby has the heavy favorite, Mysterious Night, in the Summer Stakes.

Longshot Look Presented By Kentucky Downs: Returning Serve On A Closing Day Price Play

The Fanduel Meet at Kentucky Downs is underway, featuring some of the nation's largest purses and field sizes, and one of the most attractive wagering menus on the racing calendar. The Paulick Report's Longshot Look will help you get the most out of one of North America's premier turf meets.

For each card of the seven-day meet, J.D. Fox will single out a price play with his reasoning for what makes the horse worth a look when they might go overlooked.

On Wednesday's closing day card, J.D. has his eye on a horse he liked earlier in the meet, but his race was rained out and rescheduled. He'll compete in Race 9, the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile Stakes, with morning line odds of 8-1.

J.D.'s final “Scratch Saver” pick of the season comes in Race 10, where he'll spotlight #4 Play Action Pass.

Play Action Pass was third in last year's Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile, and he has won two of his last three, with allowance victories at Churchill Downs and Ellis Park. He enters with strong form, and should be near the lead.

Kentucky Downs' 2022 meet takes place Sept. 1, 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, and 14. First post each day is at 12:25 p.m. Central, except for the Saturday, Sept. 10 card, which features a special start time of 11:30 a.m. Central.

Longshot Look Presented By Kentucky Downs: Value Hunting On Sunday’s Card

The Fanduel Meet at Kentucky Downs is underway, featuring some of the nation's largest purses and field sizes, and one of the most attractive wagering menus on the racing calendar. The Paulick Report's Longshot Look will help you get the most out of one of North America's premier turf meets.

For each card of the seven-day meet, J.D. Fox will single out a price play with his reasoning for what makes the horse worth a look when they might go overlooked.

On Sunday's card, J.D. spies a longshot with potential in Race 8, the 6 1/2-furlong Untapable Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. Despite boasting a win and a second in her two career starts, both at Colonial Downs, J.D.'s pick boasts the second-longest price on the morning line.

J.D.'s “Scratch Saver” pick comes in Race 10, the Grade 3 AGS Ladies' Marathon Stakes, where he'll focus on #9 Viburnum.

With the longest odds on the morning line of 20-1, Viburnum enters the race with two straight victories, including a win at the distance to open the Kentucky Downs meet. She's going up in class, but in great form.

Kentucky Downs' 2022 meet takes place Sept. 1, 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, and 14. First post each day is at 12:25 p.m. Central, except for the Saturday, Sept. 10 card, which features a special start time of 11:30 a.m. Central.
