Breeders’ Cup Presents The News Minute: Setting The Stage

All the serious work is done for Thoroughbreds contesting one of the 14 Grade 1 championship races at the 39th annual Breeders' Cup on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-5.

Keeneland race course in Lexington, Ky., is hosting the championships for the third time since the Breeders' Cup was first held there in 2015, when Triple Crown winner American Pharoah brought the curtain down on his Horse of the Year season with a facile victory in the mile and one-quarter Classic.

Undefeated Flightline is expected to be crowned the star of this year's Breeders' Cup and was installed the 3-5 favorite in the Classic off his dominating 19 1/4-length victory in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar in September. That followed Grade 1 victories in the Metropolitan Mile Handicap at Belmont Park in June and the Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita last December.  He has seven opponents in the Classic as he seeks his sixth consecutive career victory.

In today's Breeders' Cup News Minute, Ray Paulick sets the stage for the two-day festival, which features five championship races on Friday and nine on Saturday.

Breeders’ Cup Presents The News Minute: Focusing On Integrity And Safety

Officials with Keeneland, Breeders' Cup, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority and Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit on Wednesday went through many of the policies in place to protect the safety of the horses and the integrity of this year's Breeders' Cup world championships at Keeneland race course on Nov. 4-5.

All horses were required to be on the grounds on Tuesday, Nov. 1, with pre-race test samples taken of each entrant. Many of the horses, in North America and throughout the world,  have previously been tested out of competition prior to arriving in Kentucky.

In today's Breeders' Cup News Minute, Ray Paulick outlines a number of the safety and integrity measures, including HISA's six-strike limit riding crop rule that will be in place for the first time at the world championships.

Breeders’ Cup Presents The News Minute: Post Position Post-Mortem

“Good draw. We would've been happy with any draw,” Flightline's trainer John Sadler said after post positions were assigned for the $6-million Breeders' Cup Classic and the 13 other championship races to be contested at Keeneland racecourse in Lexington, Ky., on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-5.

Flightline drew the No. 4 post and was made the 3-5 morning line favorite in the Grade 1 Classic run at 1 1/4 miles.

“We think at a mile and a quarter you have a good run into the turn to get your position so for him it's just fine,” Sadler added.

But a number of the Breeders' Cup races do not have a long run to the turn, and in today's Breeders' Cup News Minute Ray Paulick outlines some of those challenges, including the G1 Dirt Mile and the two G1 dirt races for 2-year-olds on Friday, the Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies, run at 1 1/16 miles. All three of those races also have a shorter stretch run, with the finish line at the sixteenth pole. Outside posts are disadvantageous in those three dirt races, as well as one-mile turf contests.

Breeders’ Cup Presents The News Minute: Last-Minute Changes Before Post Position Draw

Just hours before post positions were drawn for the 39th Breeders' Cup championship races, to be held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-5, at Keeneland racecourse in Lexington, Ky., a couple of major defections were announced involving Jack Christopher in the Sprint and Letruska in the Filly & Mare Sprint.

Workout tab was light on Monday after a flurry of activity over the weekend, but there were two breezes involving contenders in the Sprint, 2021 winner Aloha West and Jackie's Warrior, the beaten favorite in last year's renewal.
