The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: 2022 Turkey Awards

It's time again for the Paulick Report Turkey Awards, an annual event that recognizes some of the less-than-spectacular events of the past year.

As always, there was an abundance of candidates for these prestigious awards and the nominating committee carefully screened all of the potential winners before putting the nominees up before a secretive online poll.

In keeping with the general transparency policies of the industry, we are not able to  divulge the voters or the list of nominees, but trust us when we tell you it was a record turnout, unlike anything we've ever seen before.

Some of the usual suspects make an appearance in this year's Turkey Awards, but there are some newcomers, too. Jockeys, trainers, racing officials … even a bird or two. We recognize bad behavior on the racetrack as well as on social media platforms. There are so many awards given to recognize outstanding achievements and good behavior, we felt it only fair to offer alternative programming.

So without further adieu, we invite you to sit back and enjoy this year's Turkey Awards broadcast.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: An Unsolvable Problem?

William T. Young, the late Kentucky philanthropist, businessman and Thoroughbred owner and breeder who stood Storm Cat at his Overbrook Farm, was never one to mince words. When discussing issues that challenged business, society or the horse industry, Young might come to the unusual conclusion that “what you've got here is an unsolvable problem.”

That perspective might apply to the retirement to stud of successful racehorses at the height of their popularity with the public. Just as they build a following inside of the sport and even break through with some who don't follow racing, they are whisked off to the breeding shed.

Such was the case with Flightline, the son of leading sire Tapit whose racing career at ages 3 and 4 included six consecutive victories – culminating with his Nov. 5 triumph in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic – under the skillful management of trainer John Sadler and his staff.

If such retirements truly are a problem, can anything be done to change the dynamics that lead to them? That's the topic of this week's Friday Show discussion between Ray Paulick, Joe Nevills and Jonathan Horowitz, the latter of whom this week launched the first in a series of commentaries meant to encourage dialogue in addressing problematic issues facing the game.

Breeders’ Cup Presents The News Minute: What We Learned On Future Stars Friday

Under sunny skies and unseasonably warm temperatures, a crowd of nearly 40,000 was on hand at Keeneland race course in Lexington, Ky., for the Future Stars Friday program to kick off the 39th Breeders' Cup world championships.

Five Grade 1 Breeders' Cup contests – all for 2-year-olds – anchored the 10-race program that saw a record $66 million wagered – a 7 percent increase from the 2021 Future Stars Friday at Del Mar in California.

In today's News Minute, Ray Paulick reviews what we learned in those five races, three run on the turf (the Juvenile Turf Sprint, Juvenile Fillies Turf, and Juvenile Turf) and two on dirt – the Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies that were part of the original seven races offered when the Breeders' Cup was first run in 1984.

The Friday Show Presented By Woodbine: Breeders’ Cup Locks And Longshots

Undefeated Flightline is expected to be the shortest-priced runner in this year's Breeders' Cup world championships when he faces seven others in Saturday's $6-million Classic at Keeneland race course in Lexington, Ky. But are there can't-miss “locks” in any of the other 13 championship races that begin on Friday?

In this week's special Breeders' Cup edition of the Friday Show, publisher Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills are joined by Andrew Champagne, whose public selections for Saratoga appear every summer in the “Pink Sheet.” They've each combed through the past performances and watched countless replays in an effort to identify that one horse that just can't lose.

Paulick's pick is in the first Breeders' Cup race, Friday's Juvenile Turf Sprint. Champagne found a can't-miss runner in Saturday's Dirt Mile and Nevills likes a most familiar runner in Saturday's Turf Sprint.

In addition to their “locks,” the trio picks one longshot they like in the Breeders' Cup, with Nevills finding an upset special in the Filly & Mare Sprint, Champagne in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, and Paulick's longshot special coming in the Turf.
