Share The Ride Takes Inside Route To Victory In General George

Silvino Ramirez's Share the Ride soared through an opening along the rail entering the stretch and pulled away to earn his second career graded-stakes victory and give journeyman rider Victor Carrasco his first in Saturday's $250,000 General George (G3) at Laurel Park.

The 45th running of the General George for 4-year-olds and up and the 69th edition of the $250,000 Runhappy Barbara Fritchie (G3) for fillies and mares 4 and older, both sprinting seven furlongs, co-headlined a Winter Sprintfest program of six stakes worth $900,000 in purses.

Originally scheduled for Feb. 13, Winter Sprintfest was pushed back a week after winter storms passed through the Mid-Atlantic region. Parx-based Share the Ride ($10.80) hit the wire in 1:22.85 over a fast main track.

Winner of the 2013 Eclipse Award as North America's champion apprentice, the 28-year-old Carrasco has battled through assorted injuries over his career, picking up his 1,000th lifetime winner last January at Laurel.

“First of all I want to say thanks to the trainer and the owner. I can't even explain,” Carrasco said. “I've been through so much in my career [that] when I passed the wire, I could not believe it. But thank God we're here and thanks to Share the Ride, we got it done.”

Share the Ride, a gelded son of Candy Ride, won the six-furlong Fall Highweight (G3) Nov. 29 at Aqueduct to cap his 2020 campaign. He made his 6-year-old debut Jan. 16 at Laurel, leading into deep stretch before being caught at the wire and finishing second by a neck behind Wendell Fong.

Last time out, Share the Ride chased the pace on the outside and settled four third, beaten 3 ¼ lengths as the favorite, in the seven-furlong Toboggan (G3) Jan. 30 at Aqueduct.

“Everything came out like the plan we made. We're really happy,” Ramirez said. “He's a fast horse. He likes to run in front. He was a little behind last time. He didn't like it so much, so this time we were in front. That's the way he likes it.”

Arthur's Hope and jockey Alcibiades Cortez were eager for the lead and held it through a brisk pace of 23.20 seconds for a quarter-mile and 46.13 for the half, with Share the Ride in close pursuit. Arthur's Hope drifted out as the field approached the stretch and Share the Ride had plenty of room to roll once straightened for home.

Tattooed, upset winner of the one-mile Jennings Jan. 16 at Laurel in his previous start, split horses in mid-stretch to get up for second, two lengths ahead of 2020 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash (G3) winner Laki. It was another half-length back to multiple stakes winner Lebda in fourth.

Arthur's Hope, Informative, Chilly in Charge, Grade 3 winner Majestic Dunhill and 2-1 favorite Funny Guy completed the order of finish. Fortunate Friends was scratched.

“The instructions were to not go to the lead, to make sure that I sit second or third, and I tried my best to do that. When I saw Cortez on my outside, I just sat patient and waited and when we got near to the quarter pole and said, 'Go,' he responded well and we got the 'W,'” Carrasco said.

“To be honest I felt like he was never slowing down,” he added. “I was a little concerned by the sixteenth pole because I've been in that position before where you feel like to you them and then you get nailed at the wire. But I felt like I had enough from the sixteenth pole to the wire.”

Laurel Park: Recovering From Spill, Carrasco To Miss Weekend Races

Journeyman rider Victor Carrasco, the Eclipse Award-winning apprentice of 2013, will sit out racing this weekend at Laurel Park in Maryland to continue his recovery from a Jan. 29 spill.

Carrasco was shaken up but escaped serious injury when he went down in the stretch of the fourth race last Friday. He took off his two remaining mounts that day as well as the Jan. 30 program. The Jan. 31 card was moved to Thursday to create a four-day live racing weekend.

“He was shaken up a little bit but the biggest problem he had was in his toe, which is doing good. Nothing major, just a little setback,” Carrasco's agent, Scotty Silver, said Thursday. “If he's feeling good, which he says he is as of today, because I talked to him this morning, we'll be good to go for next weekend.”

Carrasco entered Thursday's card ranking in the top 10 at the ongoing winter meet in wins (five) and purse earnings ($212,307). Live racing continues Friday through Sunday.

“He's actually doing much better and we're shooting for next weekend,” Silver said. “He's not going to ride this weekend but hopefully everything goes good and he'll be back definitely by next Friday.”

Agent Tom Stift reported Thursday that jockey Alex Cintron, who last rode Jan. 29 at Laurel, will return to ride Friday.

Notes: Jockey Xavier Perez swept the early daily double Thursday with wins aboard Valued Notion ($19.60) in Race 1 and Blue Sky Painter ($9.80) in Race 2 … Disputed Notion ($35) upset Thursday's finale and produced carryover jackpot payouts of $27,210.10 in the 50-cent Late Pick 5 and $25,658.34 in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 to one lucky winner. Disputed Notion was the first winner for owner-trainer Carlyne Tapscott since March 4, 2018 … There will be a carryover of $875.69 in the $1 Super Hi-5 for the opener of Friday's nine-race program. Post time is 12:25 p.m.

Manor House, Colt From First Crop By Upstart, Runs Away From Laurel Park Foes In Debut

Newtown Anner Stud Farm's Manor House, a juvenile colt from the first crop by multiple graded-stakes winning millionaire Upstart, was never threatened romping by 12 ¼ lengths in his career debut Saturday at Laurel Park in Laurel, Md.

Ridden by Victor Carrasco for trainer Michael Stidham, Manor House ($10.80) ran one mile in 1:38.31 over a fast main track in the maiden special weight for 2-year-olds. Dream Big Dreams, the 6-5 favorite also making his first start for meet-leading trainer Brittany Russell, edged Rippolino by a neck for a distant second.

Manor House, out of the Dixie Union mare Cascina, outran 25-1 longshot Camp Pendleton for the lead and went the opening quarter-mile in 24.10 and a half in 47.50, when Camp Pendleton moved within a half-length of the front-runner. Manor House got his cue on the turn and opened up with ease on his rivals, galloping to the wire under a hand ride.

Upstart Colt Crushes On Laurel Debut

5th-Laurel, $48,520, Msw, 12-12, 2yo, 1m, 1:38.31, ft, 12 1/4 lengths.
MANOR HOUSE (c, 2, Upstart–Cascina, by Dixie Union) could scarcely have been more impressive making his debut over Laurel’s one-turn mile Saturday, as he drew off through the final furlong to graduate by 12 1/4 lengths. The Florida-bred was away to an uneventful beginning from the two hole and made the lead with a minimum of fuss, covering the opening half in :47.50 while taking mild pressure. He began to widen approaching the quarter pole, kicked farther in front in upper stretch and was eased through the final 40 yards by Victor Carrasco. Manor House, who had trained with vigor at trainer Mike Stidham’s Fair Hill base ahead of this debut, is the 18th winner for his first-crop sire (by Flatter). Manor House is a half-brother to Bella Vincenza (Biondetti), SW, $246,043, and his dam was most recently covered by Army Mule from this same A.P. Indy sire line. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $22,800.
