Short, But Sweet Field Set For Transylvania

A small, but competitive field of six sophomore colts are set to line up Friday in Keeneland's GIII Transylvania S. Two-time Transylvania winner Chad Brown saddles a third of the field in Verbal (Flintshire {GB}) and Napoleonic War (War Front). Rallying to a decisive score in his Belmont unveiling Oct. 10, Juddmonte homebred Verbal closed strongly to take Del Mar's GIII Cecil B. Demille S. at Del Mar next out Nov. 28. He is the 2-1 morning-line favorite in this sophomore bow.

His stablemate Napoleonic War is the longest shot on the morning line at 15-1 after charging from well back to dead-heat for the win in his Tampa debut Jan. 21.

Grand Sonata (Medaglia d'Oro) enters on a hot streak. The Todd Pletcher pupil is two-for-two this season with narrow victories in Gulfstream's Dania Beach S. Jan. 1 and GIII Kitten's Joy S. Feb. 5.

Mark Casse sends out a pair in here in Coinage (Tapit) and Credibility (Nyquist). Winner of the GIII With Anticipation S. last year, Coinage was third in the Kitten's Joy, but rebounded with a neck success in the Palm Beach S. in Hallandale Mar. 5. Third in the GII Bourbon S. last term, Credibility kicked off this season with an off-the-turf optional claimer win at Gulfstream Jan. 22, but could only manage sixth in the Palm Beach.

Rounding out the sextet is undefeated Sy Dog (Slumber {GB}), a dominant winner first out at Belmont Oct. 24, who rallied to victory in Aqueduct's Central Park S. next out Nov. 27.

Verbal Rallies To Win Cecil B. DeMille Stakes At Del Mar

Verbal made the trip from New York to California a winning one, the son of Flintshire's stretch drive putting him on the wire first in the Grade 3 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

On the final day of the Bing Crosby season at the Del Mar, Calif., racetrack, the field of 10 broke evenly from the starting gate, Groovy Huey showing his head first with Get Back Goldie second as they approached the first turn. The two leaders put seven lengths between them and the field on the backstretch, with Barsabas third and Cabo Spirit in fourth.

Approaching the far turn, Get Back Goldie assumed the lead, with Barsabas and Cabo Spirit back in second and third as Groovy Huey fell out of contention. Jose Ortiz moved Verbal from midpack on the backstretch to fourth on the far turn, going four-wide into the stretch. Cabo Spirit took the lead in the stretch, with Barsabas and Verbal driving down the center of the track. The favored Verbal hit the front in the last strides before the wire, taking the G3 by a half-length. Barsabas was second, with Cabo Spirit third. Lottery Pick, Optimising, Derecho Dandy, Khantaro d'Oro, Stotland, Get Back Goldie, and Groovy Huey rounded out the order of finish.

The final time for the one-mile Cecil B. DeMille was 1:36.16. Find this race's chart here.

Verbal paid $4.00, $3.20, and $2.60. Barsabas paid $31.20 and $12.80. Cabo Spirit paid $5.00.

“He won easy last time, but that was against maidens. He was running against winners today, much better horses. I knew there would be speed in the race so, even though I had the outside post, I was able to drop over and save some ground. He came running when it counted. The boss (trainer Chad Brown) knows how to spot a horse. He had it right today,” jockey Jose Ortiz told the Del Mar Press Office after the race.

“I liked the way he was coming into this race, he's been training well. It worked out like we thought. He's got a really good turn of foot and he got there. We didn't have much luck yesterday, but this is a really good start for today,” Juan Hernandez, assistant to trainer Chad Brown, said after the Cecil B. DeMille.

Bred in Kentucky by owner Juddmonte Farms, Verbal is out of the Bernardini mare Endless Chat. The G3 Cecil B. DeMille is Verbal's second win in two career starts for career earnings of $109,500.

Brown and Juddmonte Seek Turf Stakes Sweep

A few hours before Chad Brown saddles Juddmonte's Viadera (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) in search of a title defense in the GI Matriarch S., he will send out that operation's Verbal (Flintshire {GB}) as the likely favorite in the GIII Cecil B. Demille S. at Del Mar Sunday. A homebred son of a freshman stallion raced by these connections, the bay rallied from well back to score an impressive debut victory going a mile at Belmont Oct. 10. His pilot that day, Jose Ortiz, makes the trip west to ride Verbal and Matriarch contender Regal Glory (Animal Kingdom).

Optimising (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) won his first start at Wolverhampton June 21 for trainer Michael Bell, after which he was privately acquired by these connections and sent to Michael McCarthy. Fourth in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf S. Sept. 6, the bay checked in second in the Qatar Golden Mile S. here Nov. 5.

Derecho Dandy (Connect) looks to take his turf record to two-for-two. Off the board in his first two tries on the main track here in August, the dark bay went wire-to-wire in his first turf try at Santa Anita Oct. 17.
