Eda Returns To Graded-Stakes Action In Great Lady M

Making just her second start in the last 16 months, Bob Baffert's Eda (Munnings) looks to keep her winning streak rolling in Tuesday's GII Great Lady M S. Los Alamitos Race Course plays host to the $550,000 OBS March grad who enters having won her last five straight dating back to Oct. 2021 for owner Baoma Corp. Already a Grade I winner over this track with her victory in 2021's GI Starlet S., Eda went to the sidelines off a gate-to-wire score in the GIII Santa Ysabel in her next start and did not return for 13 months. Again showing her trademark speed, she wired the allowance field at Santa Anita Apr. 28 in her first start off the layoff. Trainer Bob Baffert seeks his fifth Great Lady M win having taken four of the last seven including back-to-back editions with Marley's Freedom (Blame) in 2018 and 2019.

Lined up just to Eda's inside, Elm Drive (Mohaymen) also enters off a win, taking the Mizdirection S. at Santa Anita May 20 in her first attempt on the grass. Last year's third-place finisher in this race, the 4-year-old has her own win streak going and is undefeated since coming back to Phil D'Amato's barn for 2023 with a win in the off-the-turf GIII Monrovia Apr. 8. In her only prior start against Eda, Elm Drive came out the winner, just getting her head in front of her rival in second career start in the 2021 rendition of the GII Sorrento S.

Last year's winning connections of owner Nick Alexander and trainer Steven Miyadi, who took the 2022 Great Lady M with Becca Taylor (Old Topper) bring Rose Maddox (Grazen) to the gate in an attempt to take back-to-back renditions of the Great Lady M. The grey filly makes her graded-stakes debut Tuesday but enters off multiple stakes win in both open and state-bred company.

The only 3-year-olds in the field, Vegas Magic (Good Magic) and Chismosa (Clubhouse Ride) step up to face older rivals for the first time. Vegas Magic came out running with three-straight wins including a in the GII Sorrento S. last Aug. but hasn't been seen since a 10th to 2-year-old filly champion Wonder Wheel (Into Mischief) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Nov. 4. Chismosa also debuted a winner in her first three and was a narrowly-beaten sixth in the GIII Senorita S. May 6.

Arrogate’s And Tell Me Nolies Upsets Del Mar Debutante In Photo Finish

Peter Redekop's And Tell Me Nolies paid tribute to her late champion sire Arrogate Saturday, nailing heavy favorite and 'TDN Rising Star' Home Cooking (Honor Code) on the line to take the GI Del Mar Debutante S.

Given a 9-1 chance with Home Cooking pounded down to 3-5, And Tell Me No Lies shuffled a bit at the start as her neighbors on each side broke in her direction, but she did not falter and moved up to establish position as the chalk took control, clocking a :22.01 first quarter. One off the fence in fifth, she kept the favorite within her sights as the half went in a swift :44.36. And Tell Me Nolies ranged up two wide on the far turn as Home Cooking entered the stretch on a clear lead. The Bob Baffert runner grew a bit leg weary in the final strides and And Tell Me Nolies found just enough to push past her late for a narrow upset in a tight photo finish. Ice Dancing (Frosted) completed the trifecta.

“I told Peter [Miller] that I had confidence in this filly right from the start,” said winning rider Ramon Vasquez. “I'm glad he was loyal to me and let me ride her in this one. She was a runner all the way today. And I knew I was the winner at the wire. This is my first Grade I win. It is so amazing. I want to thank Peter for giving me this chance. This is amazing.”

“I didn't see a ton of speed on the form,” Miller said. “We were drawn inside. I think he [Vasquez] wanted to get position, which he did. I did like some of the moves he made. At the five-eighths pole when he beat Cedillo ([Vegas Magic] to the spot, and then when he got her outside around the two-and-a-half furlong pole, I felt really good.”

A $70,000 KEESEP acquisition by D.J. Stable, And Tell Me Nolies brought $230,000 from agent Bryan Anderson at OBS April after breezing in :10 flat. Rallying for fourth behind Satin Doll (Congrats)–who was scratched from this event–when unveiled in a five-panel event at this oval July 23, she broke through next out with a narrow graduation going 6 1/2 furlongs over this strip Aug. 14. Ice Dancing finished third that day.

Pedigree Notes:

And Tell Me Nolies is the second Grade I/graded winner for her late sire Arrogate. She hails from his second of three crops and his other graded scorer comes from his first in this year's GI Kentucky Oaks victress Secret Oath. They are two of the Eclipse winners four black-type scorers. Breeder Lara Run acquired GSW & GISP Be Fair for $50,000 at the 2018 KEENOV sale in foal to Practical Joke and sold her to Jim Ballinger in foal to super sire Gun Runner for $35,000 at the OBSWIN sale. The resulting foal is a now-yearling colt, who brought $150,000 from McMahon & Hill Bloodstock at Keeneland November last term. The half-sister to GISW Macho Again (Macho Uno) failed to get in foal to The Big Beast for 2022, but was bred to Mo Town this spring.

Longshot Vegas Magic Stays Perfect In Sorrento

Vegas Magic (Good Magic) made it a perfect three-for-three while providing her freshman sire with his first graded stakes victory in Saturday evening's GII Sorrento S. at Del Mar.

A popular debut winner at Santa Anita June 11, she beat the boys by a nose in the Everett Nevin S. at Pleasanton last time July 9.

Overlooked at 14-1 here, Vegas Magic sat a stalking trip on the inside as heavily favored runaway Los Al debut winner Procrastination (Not This Time) set the pace. Vegas Magic tipped off the rail to set her sights on the pacesetter as they turned for home and kicked on nicely to remain unbeaten.

“This filly is so gutty,” said Leandro Mora, assistant to winning trainer Doug O'Neill. “We were expecting her to give us a good race, she was my choice. Del Mar isn't the perfect place for some horses. It is like Saratoga: you might bring a nice horse to Saratoga and still might not win.”

Pedigree Notes:

Vegas Magic, a $100,000 OBS March breezer (:10 2/5), becomes the first graded winner for her freshman sire Good Magic. Rockport Harbor is now the broodmare sire of four graded winners. Multiple Canadian stakes winner Heidi Maria is also represented by a Kantharos filly of 2021 and a Sharp Azteca filly of this year. She was bred back to Collected. This is the same female family as GSW & GISP Sweet Whiskey (Old Fashioned).

Filly Beats the Boys to Become First Stakes Winner for Good Magic

The Doug O'Neill-trained Vegas Magic became the first black-type winner for freshman sire Good Magic (by Curlin) with a late-closing, nail-biting rush to the front in Pleasanton's Everett Nevin S. One of three fillies going up against colts, Vegas Magic bided her time near the back of the field early, content to let others duke it out up front as the fractions clicked by in :22.07 and :45.17. Still well back in sixth at the top of the stretch, Vegas Magic suddenly closed with a vengeance, splitting horses late and hurling toward the wire in a rush. She got up just in time, winning by a nose as the 6-5 favorite.

Vegas Magic is unbeaten in two starts. The bay was unveiled June 11 at Santa Anita, winning a five-furlong maiden special weight by a length to become her sire's second career winner and is now his first stakes winner. Good Magic, the champion 2-year-old colt of 2017, stands at Hill 'n' Dale Farm near Paris, Kentucky and has four career winners to date.

A $100,000 purchase at OBS March after working in :10 2/5, Vegas Magic has a yearling half-sister by Kantharos. Her dam also produced a filly by Sharp Azteca Apr. 9. Click for the Equibase.com chart.
