Kentucky Derby Winner Orb Sold To Stand In Uruguay

Orb, the winner of the 2013 Kentucky Derby, has been purchased by a group of Uruguayan breeders and he will relocate to that country for the upcoming Southern Hemisphere breeding season.

The 11-year-old son of Malibu Moon will stand at Haras Cuatro Piedras, a farm owned by Uruguayan Breeders Association president Pablo Salomone. He entered stud at Claiborne Farm in 2014.

From five crops of racing age, Orb has sired 155 winners for combined progeny earnings of more than $10.9 million. His runners of note include Grade 1 winner Sippican Harbor and O Besos, who is currently pointing towards this year's Kentucky Derby after finishing third in the G2 Louisiana Derby.

“Orb was a wonderful horse with a great pedigree and look about him,” said trainer Shug McGaughey, who conditioned the horse for owners Stuart Janney and Phipps Stable. “He gave me many thrills, the ultimate one being his win in the Kentucky Derby. I am sure he will do very well as a stallion in his new home.”

Orb won five of 12 starts during his racing career, for earnings of $2,612,516. He became a top threat on the 2013 Triple Crown trail after winning the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes and the G1 Florida Derby, before winning the Kentucky Derby by 2 1/2 lengths as the post time favorite. He also finished third in the Belmont Stakes and the G1 Travers Stakes.

The deal was brokered by Marette Farrell and Sebastian Angelillo along with David Seguias.

“They are thrilled to secure a Kentucky Derby winner for Uruguay from Ruffian's family,” Farrell said. “This is a key international Phipps pedigree loaded with strong South American connections like Uruguayan champion 2- and 3-year-old filly Algecira Fever, and multiple G1 winner Siempre En Mi Mente, along with Suggestive Boy who was a three-time G1 winner in Argentina and then won the G1 Frank Kilroy Mile in the U.S. We wish him all the best and firmly believe he will establish himself as the top stallion down there.”

Like many U.S. stallions who have sold to South American breeding programs in recent years, Orb was purchased by a sizable group of Uruguayan breeders. The coalition that secured Orb includes Haras Bettina, Cuatro Piedras, Don Alfredo, Don Camilo, Don Bebe, Don Juca, El Arbolito, Entrevero, La Concordia, La Coluda, La Pomme, Los Apamates, Los Seis, Mocambú, Musa, Nijú (Brasil), San Miguel Queguay, Santa Delfina de la Candelaria, Santa María de Juncal, Sin Nombre, Stud Tinto y Celeste, Tsimbalar, Vaccaro (Brasil) and Viejo Molino.

“With Orb, for the first time, there is a very well-balanced union in which no partner exceeds 10 percent (ownership),” Angelillo said. “We believe that this is a first step on a path that definitely leads in the right direction.”

Orb will join a stallion roster at Haras Cuatro Piedras that also includes Hall of Famer and 2006 Horse of the Year Invasor. The farm has previously housed shuttle stallions including Smarty Jones, Real Quiet, and Trinniberg.

Laminitis Claims Grade 1 Winner Majesticperfection In Uruguay

Grade 1 winner Majesticperfection, the sire of Kentucky Oaks winner Lovely Maria, was euthanized following a battle with laminitis at Haras Rapetti in Uruguay, the South American publication Turf Diario reports.

The 15-year-old son of Harlan's Holiday had been standing in Uruguay since 2018 after beginning his breeding career in 2011 at Airdrie Stud.

From eight crops of racing age, Majesticperfection has sired 231 winners, with combined progeny earnings of more than $21 million.

His centerpiece offspring is Lovely Maria, who took the 2015 Oaks with a powerful kick down the Churchill Downs stretch. The filly preceded her signature victory with a score in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland.

In 2020, Majesticperfection's runners were led by Bell's the One, who upset Serengeti Empress to win the G1 Derby City Distaff Stakes. She also won the G3 Winning Colors Stakes last year, and she finished the season with a third-place effort in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. In 2019, Bell's the One won the G2 Raven Run Stakes.

Other runners of note by Majesticperfection include Grade 3 winners Chanteline, Hebbronville, Majestic Dunhill, Lady Ninja, Mr Dumas, and Four Graces.

Majesticperfection's oldest foals since moving to Uruguay will be 2-year-olds of 2021. According to records from the Uruguay Stud Book, the stallion covered 79 mares in 2018 and 58 mares in 2019. He was among the country's most active stallions during both seasons.

Owned during his on-track career by Padua Stables and trained by Steve Asmussen, Majesticperfection won five of six starts for earnings of $310,430.

After finishing third in his debut start, Majesticperfection never lost another race, winning allowance races at Oaklawn Park and Churchill Downs before jumping up to stakes competition in the Iowa Sprint Handicap. He capped off his career with a wire-to-wire drubbing of the G1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap in Saratoga.

Uruguayan Star Ajuste Fiscal Seeking Dubai World Cup Invite, Tops Thursday’s Al Maktoum Challenge

Uruguayan star Ajuste Fiscal tops a seemingly strong contingent brought by Dubai World Cup Carnival-winning conditioner Antonio Cintra when he starts in Thursday's Group 2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1 at Meydan Racecourse.

Owned by Stud La Pomme, the apple of the Cintra operation enters off a Listed victory over this distance on grass in September, but is proven at the G1 level in the past on dirt, including resounding victories in the Gran Premio Pedro Ramirez over 12 furlongs, Gran Premio Jockey Club over 10 furlongs and Gran Premio Polla de Potrillos over one mile.

Ajuste Fiscal is sired by the Illinois-bred multiple Grade 3 winner Ioya Bigtime (Dynaformer).

It would, of course, not be a surprise to see a Uruguayan horse succeed in Dubai, thanks to the exploits of the great Invasor.

“It's a pleasure to be a part of this event again and I'm really happy to be back here,” said Cintra, who won the 2006 Al Shindagha Sprint with Heart Alone. “Ajuste Fiscal is the best horse that I brought. He's a very good horse on dirt and the distance (one mile) is a little bit short for him, but it's a good (place) to start. The plan is the second and third rounds of the Maktoum (Challenge). He is the top horse, but he will get very tough races–but I believe he can get an invitation for the World Cup.”

Cintra will be busy on opening night of the Carnival, also saddling Stud Crespi's 14-time winner Almoradi, a G1-placed multiple G3 winner, in the Al Fahidi Fort (G2) over seven furlongs on turf, as well as Stud Guara del Sur's exciting 4-for-4 sprinter Upper Class in the Dubawi (G3). A Listed winner, the latter must step up considerably, but has done little wrong thus far and appears a strong finisher who will enjoy a step back up to six furlongs.

Cintra: “(Almoradi) is a good horse on dirt and turf and we planned to run him on dirt, but he wasn't looking good on this kind of dirt. It was a little soft for him, so we're trying to turf. Upper Class is unbeaten and is a very good sprinter. He's three years old and gets two kilos. Hopefully he'll run very well. He runs just on dirt, but the pedigree is a turf horse. We'll start on dirt with him.”
