Robert Hartman New Chair Of Arizona’s Race Track Industry Program

The University of Arizona is pleased to welcome Robert Hartman as the new Chair of the Race Track Industry Program (RTIP). Hartman, a graduate of the RTIP, brings a broad range of experience to the role. For over a decade, he held marketing and management positions at the New York Racing Association, Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields. His previous experience also includes serving as the Associate Athletic Director at the University of California, Berkeley and CEO of the American Contract Bridge League.

Hartman sees new possibilities for the RTIP students going forward.

“A traditional on-campus four-year education experience may not be the right fit for some prospective RTIP students,” Hartman said. “We need to meet students where they are by developing offerings tailored to fit their needs. We will explore ideas such as additional remote learning opportunities, certificate programs, international programs and continuing education programs.

“Listening to the needs of racing industry stakeholders will be an important first step as we begin to reshape the Program,” Hartman continued. “The Global Symposium on Racing has been the premier industry gathering for the exchange of ideas and best practices. We plan to continue to build on that success.”

Prairie Meadows Brings Bobby Neuman Back To The Announcer’s Booth

Accomplished track announcer Bobby Neuman, whose resume includes successful stints at Calder Race Course in Florida and Los Alamitos Race Course in California, will call the races at Prairie Meadows Casino, Racetrack, and Hotel during the 84-day 2021 live horse racing season that begins on Friday, April 30 and runs through Saturday, Sept. 25.

“I'm really excited about getting back into the booth,” Neuman said by phone after his hiring. “Calling the races has always been my passion and I believe I will bring an accurate, entertaining, and professional approach to the fans watching Prairie Meadows racing on-track, in the simulcast outlets, and at home.”

“I see the horses, the jockeys, the trainers, and the owners as the stars of the show,” Neuman added. “It's the job of a good announcer to put the spotlight on their accomplishments on the race track.”

Neuman earned a degree in Business Administration through the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program before embarking on what has become a well-traveled career as a track announcer.

“I started calling at the Arizona fairs in the early 90s.” he recalled. “I was at Thistledown for three years, at Calder for 15 years, I called harness races at The Red Mile and Pompano Park, I had a fill-in stint at Churchill Downs, and I was in the booth at Los Alamitos for four Thoroughbred meets through 2019.”

Neuman will step into his role at Prairie Meadows on Friday, May 7 after fulfilling his commitment to work Kentucky Oaks Friday and Kentucky Derby Saturday at Churchill Downs for Horse Racing Radio Network.

“I'm grateful that Prairie Meadows Vice President of Racing Derron Heldt offered me the opportunity to call the races in Iowa this season,” added Neuman. “And I am appreciative that he has given his approval for me to honor my Derby week commitment to HRRN.”

Former Prairie Meadows track announcer Ken Miller will handle the race calling duties for the first two days of the 2021 season on Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1.

University Of Arizona Seeks New Chair For Race Track Industry Program

The University of Arizona School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is seeking an individual to lead the school's Race Track Industry Program.

Wendy Davis, current director, is not returning to lead a program whose graduates include Thoroughbred trainers Bob Baffert and Todd Pletcher, New York Racing Association senior vice president Martin Panza and countless others in staff and managements positions throughout the racing and gaming industries.

Specifically, the university is seeking to fill the position for an assistant or associate professor of practice and to chair the Race Track Industry Emphasis program, one of four emphases in the Animal Science Bachelor's degree.

A job description estimates that 50% of the position's time will be spent on instruction, with 40% on administration (budgeting, organizing the annual Global Symposium on Racing & Gaming, maintaining revenues that fund the program), and 10% on service (local and national committees, and professional societies).

A master's degree is included among the minimum requirements, in addition to having demonstrated success in one area of the racing industry for at least 10 years.

Internships in coordination with Rillito racetrack in Tucson, Ariz., will continue, according to Michael Weiss, the track's general manager who created the Paribet Racetrack Industry Student Experience that fills racetrack jobs with students from the Race Track Industry Program.
