GSW Spielberg Confirmed for Florida Derby

SF Racing LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stable LLC, Golconda Stables, Siena Farm LLC and Robert Masterson's Spielberg (Union Rags) has been confirmed to contest the GI Curlin Florida Derby Mar. 27 at Gulfstream Park. Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, the 3-year-old is expected to face GIII Holy Bull S. and GI Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. winner Greatest Honour (Tapit) in the nine-furlong test that has produced the winners of 60 Triple Crown events.

“We'll see how he stacks up,” Baffert said Friday.

Spielberg, who is scheduled to breeze at Santa Anita Sunday before shipping to South Florida, most recently finished a well-beaten second behind Eclipse champion Essential Quality (Tapit) in the Feb. 27 GIII Southwest S. at Oaklawn Park.

“He's a great-feeling horse,” Baffert said about the colt's latest start. “He came out of that race in great shape.”

In his 2021 debut, the $1-million KEESEP purchase stumbled at the start of the GIII Robert B. Lewis S. at Santa Anita before finishing fourth behind Baffert-trained winner Medina Spirit (Protonico).

“He needs to get away from the gate well,” said Baffert of Spielberg's chances of winning the Florida Derby.

During his juvenile campaign, Spielberg finished second in the GI Del Mar Futurity and third in the GI American Pharoah S. at Santa Anita before breaking is maiden in his fourth start. He went on to win the GII Los Alamitos Futurity.

Pletcher Targeting Wood Memorial With Maiden Winner Dynamic One, Withers Runner-Up Overtook

Trainer Todd Pletcher shipped Dynamic One to New York from his winter division at Palm Beach Downs hoping for a performance worthy of pointing for the Grade 2, $750,000 Wood Memorial presented by Resorts World Casino on April 3, and the Union Rags colt delivered with a 5 ¼-length maiden score going 1 1/8 miles on Sunday at Aqueduct Racetrack.

The nine-furlong Wood Memorial is the final local prep for the Grade 1, $3 million Kentucky Derby on May 1 at Churchill Downs, offering 100-40-20-10 points to the top-four finishers.

Owned by Repole Stable, Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable, Dynamic One tracked a leisurely pace from second, assumed command outside the quarter-pole and powered home a decisive winner while registering a 79 Beyer Speed Figure in his fourth-out graduation.

Dynamic One has kept quality company, having finishing behind subsequent Grade 3 Gotham winner Weyburn in his November debut at the Big A, where he was a distant ninth as the beaten favorite. He shipped to Gulfstream for his following two starts at 1 1/16-miles, which included a runner-up effort to eventual dual graded stakes-winner Greatest Honour on December 26.

“We were hoping for that type of effort,” Pletcher said. “He ran a good second at Gulfstream to Greatest Honour. We were unfortunate to draw the nine and eleven post in his last couple of starts at Gulfstream and it can be hard going a mile and a sixteenth from there. The intention was to see if he could earn his way into the Wood, and that's what he did.”

Bred in Kentucky by co-owner Phipps Stable, Dynamic One is out of the Smart Strike mare Beat the Drums. His respective second and fourth dam are champions Storm Flag Flying and Personal Ensign. Dynamic One was a $725,000 purchase from the Claiborne Farm consignment at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Pletcher will also be represented in the Wood Memorial by Grade 3 Withers runner-up Overtook, who is also being prepared at Palm Beach Downs.

Owned by Repole, and St. Elias Stable with Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, Overtook finished behind eventual graded stakes-placed Nova Rags and stablemate Known Agenda in his first two starts before rallying from 10 lengths off the pace to graduate at third asking going a one-turn mile at Aqueduct on December 20.

“He's on target for the Wood also,” Pletcher said. “There's a lot of options for a horse like him this time of year and we'll play everything by ear, but right now the goal is the Wood. He's trained excellent since the Withers.”

Also purchased form the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Overtook was a $1 million acquisition from the Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency consignment and is by multiple champion producer Curlin out of the Grade 1-winning A.P. Indy mare Got Lucky. He is a direct descendant of prestigious broodmares Numbered Account and La Troienne.

Pletcher seeks a sixth Wood victory having sent out Vino Rosso [2018], Outwork [2016], Verrazanno [2013], Gemologist [2012] and Eskendereya [2010] to wins in the prestigious race.

Pletcher also added that St. Elias Stable's Known Agenda is on target for the Grade 1, $750,000 Florida Derby on March 27 at Gulfstream Park and will breeze at Palm Beach Downs on Saturday in preparation for the event.

Known Agenda, third in the Grade 2 Remsen in December at the Big A, finished fifth as the favorite in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis in February at Tampa Bay Downs. The chestnut added blinkers when stretching out to nine furlongs in an optional-claiming event at Gulfstream on February 26 and romped to an 11-length score.

“He'll breeze tomorrow morning with the Florida Derby in mind,” Pletcher said. “We added blinkers to him last time and that really seems to get his mind into the game.”

A Kentucky homebred, Known Agenda also is by Curlin and out of Grade 1-winner Byrama.

Shadwell Stable's unbeaten graded stakes-winner Malathaat is nearing her return to action. She was last seen winning the Grade 2 Demoiselle on December 5 over a sloppy main track at the Big A.

Pletcher said that the Curlin bay filly out of Grade 1-winner Dreaming of Julia could return in either the Grade 2, $200,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks on March 27 or the Grade 1, $400,000 Ashland on April 3 at Keeneland.

“It will depend on how she breezes these next couple of weeks,” said Pletcher.

After giving Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez his 2,000th Belmont Park victory in her October 9 debut, Malathaat was an easy winner of the one-mile Tempted on November 6 at Aqueduct en route to the Demoiselle. Her last work was a five-furlong move at Palm Beach Downs on March 6, completed in 1:01.89.

Norm Casse Hoping Olliemyboy Takes ‘Another Step Up’ In New Orleans Classic

It's probably fitting that Norm Casse trains Olliemyboy. Up and coming trainer. Up and coming horse. Both are hoping to snag a big prize on the national scene when Casse saddles Olliemyboy as a live longshot in the New Orleans Classic (G2) on the March 20 undercard of the TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) program at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Dennis Narlinger's JMJ Racing Stables' owns Olliemyboy, an Ontario-sired 4-year-old son of Union Rags who has impressed winning a pair of 1 1/16-mile dirt starts at the meet. He arrived in Casse's barn toward the end of 2020 after going 1-for-6 with trainer Arnaud Delacour and Sid Attard combined. He ran primarily over the Tapeta at Woodbine, including finishing 11th in the Queen's Plate in September against fellow Canadian foals, and came to Casse more by circumstance than anything else.

“Dennis wanted him to be based at the Fair Grounds,” Casse said. “He has a lot of trainers, but I was his only trainer that has horses here. I basically got the horse by default from Sid. I didn't do much with him, just put him into our program, and got him ready.”

Casse initially wanted to run Olliemyboy on the turf in an entry-level allowance here Jan. 14 but when the race was washed off the grass, he left him in and the result was a somewhat surprising, yet convincing 4 ¼-length win. Casse still went seeking turf but another allowance race didn't fill, which prompted him to enter back on the dirt in a Feb. 20 optional-claimer. Olliemyboy lagged well off a solid pace, made a wide, menacing move on the far turn, and drew away strongly late for a 1 ½-length win over a very solid group of accomplished runners.

“We've really been better lucky than good,” Casse admitted. “Having the race come off the turf and it was kind of an easy race. Then we were in between running him back on dirt or trying him on the turf, and the turf race didn't go. So, our hands have been played for us.”

The win last-out prompted Casse to look ahead to deeper waters, and with the big $400,000 purse of the New Orleans Classic, a 1 1/8-mile race over a Fair Grounds main track that Olliemyboy clearly likes, the time is right to take a shot with a horse who continues to improve. It also doesn't hurt that the undefeated Maxfield, who is 2-for-2 at the meet, is shipping out to California for the March 6 Santa Anita Handicap (G1).

“It's another step up, but I think it's a pretty wide-open race,” Casse said. “He's going to have to have some help on the front end, but I think he'll be very, very competitive in it. We're not going to try and reinvent the wheel. We're just going to train him the same way he came into the last two; just some nice solid works and hopefully he shows that next progression.”

Casse knows what it's like to be around a top-quality horse, as he served as his dad Mark's top assistant before going out on his own in 2018. Norm Casse was integral in the success of champions like Tepin and Classic Empire, who helped Mark Casse earn racing's highest honor in 2020, when he was elected to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Norm Casse had sent horses to Fair Grounds in the past, but also split his stock at Palm Meadows in Florida while running at Gulfstream Park. This year he decided to focus solely at Fair Grounds, and has enjoyed plenty of success, going 21-5-1-3 at the meet. With trainers like Brad Cox, Steve Asmussen, and Tom Amoss stabled locally, Casse knows New Orleans is the perfect place to earn his keep.

“Two-thirds of the guys that were nominated for the Eclipse Award for leading trainer are based here, so it's obviously a very good place to be,” Casse said. “I've got 24 here and that's my entire barn. It was an easy decision. Fair Grounds gave me the opportunity to have all my horses in one place instead of being spread out and that allowed me to concentrate on one racetrack.”

Casse brought a mix of maidens, claimers, and allowance horses with him and is constantly trying to build a stable he would like to see number reach 60-70 horses in the future. Whether it was learning from his Hall of Fame father, or competing on a day-in, day-out basis against the likes of a Hall of Famer and Eclipse Award winner in Asmussen, Eclipse Award winner Cox, and 11-time local champion in Amoss, Casse has tried to soak as much in as possible.

“I feel like if you're not learning something every day, you're not approaching it the right way,” Casse said. “You try to win every race but when you don't win, hopefully you learn from that. I hold my program and my stable in high regard, and I believe that when I bring horses over, even if it's a straight maiden race against Brad, Steve, or Tom, that we can compete with them and I believe in that.”

A Louisville native, Casse will head back to Churchill Downs after the meet and then to Saratoga over the summer. Where Olliemyboy runs at during those meets is still to be determined, but it's been so far, so good with a horse that might not fit the mold of most of Casse's horses.

“He's a cool horse,” Casse said. “He's not the style of horse that I like. I like a horse that shows good early speed and is tactical, he honestly drops back and makes one run. In the morning he's unremarkable. You wouldn't think he'd be a horse that's won two pretty good allowance races back-to-back and is being pointed to a Grade 2 in his next start, but he obviously takes care of business in the afternoons.”
