Racing Community Takes on 24-Hr Challenge to Benefit Racing Welfare

A total of 81 cyclists took part in a 24-hour challenge–embarking on 30km loops that kicked off at Cheltenham racecourse July 16–to benefit Racing Welfare, which supports the racing community. Originally tabbed with a £60,000, the total amount raised by the event is set to top £100,000. In addition to the efforts of the cyclists, funding is also boosted by event sponsors Unibet, Racehorse Lotto, The Jockey Club and Tattersalls. Well beyond the £60,000 target, that figure will have a huge impact, and could cover the cost of employing a welfare team in one of the charity's four regions for a whole year, providing direct on-the-ground support to racing's people.

Alice Campbell, representing Team Racing Welfare, said, “I've worked in National Hunt racing for nearly 20 years and am currently working for Nigel Twiston-Davies. I entered the cycle challenge because Racing Welfare helped me get back to full fitness after breaking my leg and rupturing my PCL ligament and wanted to give something back.”

Participants hailed from all across the racing industry, and included Sir AP McCoy, trainers Ben Pauling and Harry Fry with two teams each, Magnolia Cup winner Khadija Mellah, Assistant trainer to Dan Skelton Tom Messenger, and Team Sky Sports consisting of Vanessa Ryle, Rosie Tapner, Sean Boyce and Oisin Murphy.

Collectively the cyclists amassed a total of 644 laps and a staggering 12,313km. The most laps (57) were recorded by The Menorahs–consisting of Rhys Flint, Harry Skelton, Tom Danter and Richard Johnson.

Great Racing Welfare Cycle Challenge Revealed

The Great Racing Welfare Cycle Challenge will begin at noon on July 16 and last until noon the following day. The cycling event will raise funds for Racing Welfare, with 20 teams of four participating. This challenge sees two people cycling on the route in a 30km-loop, while the other two team members rest at the 'Riders Camp' at Cheltenham Racecourse.

Among those saddling up are former champion jockeys Sir AP McCoy, Richard Johnson, Harry Skelton and Oisin Murphy. Trainer Ben Pauling is fielding two teams, while racing broadcasters Sean Boyce, Vanessa Ryle and Rosie Tapner are also teaming up for Sky Sports. There are also four key sponsors that are supporting the challenge: The Jockey Club, Tattersalls, Unibet and The Racehorse Lotto. The sponsors have agreed to donate 25p to Racing Welfare for all the miles achieved by each team.

At the end of the challenge, the fundraising target is £60,000. A number of 'money can't buy' auction lots have also been donated to support the challengers to meet their fundraising target which you can bid on here. ‘Racing Home’ To Launch On July 6

Women in Racing and Kindred Group (Unibet), supported by the Racing Foundation, will officially introduce the 'Racing Home' project at Kempton Park from 3-5 p.m. on July 6. Free and open to all industry staff, the event recognises the first motherhood/parenthood portal as part of their ongoing project to educate and empower all stakeholders within the horseracing industry. Employers, employees and those who are self-employed now have easy access to information about rights and entitlements regarding pregnancy, maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental leave, flexible working, self-employment and statutory pay. Racing Home Website Launched

'Racing Home', an online platform for educating and empowering racing's employers, employees and the self-employed, was launched by Women in Racing with support from the Racing Foundation, Kindred Group and the latter's flagship brand Unibet on Wednesday. The website focuses on motherhood/parenthood and providing easy access to information about rights and entitlements regarding pregnancy, maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental leave, flexible working, self-employment and statutory pay.

Women in Racing Chair, Tallulah Lewis, said, “Women in Racing are incredible proud to be launching the Racing Home Project with three key initiatives which aim to have immediate impact on the lives of all working parents. The work we have been undertaking has identified some serious challenges faced by mothers and parents working in the horseracing industry and two years of research and webinars have led to Women in Racing in tandem with Simply Racing and the industry stakeholders developing meaningful solutions that will positively impact the working lives of many, enhancing, wellbeing, resilience and quality of life.”
