Galilean Emerges From Stretch Duel, Inquiry With California Flag Win

Trainer John Sadler's classy Galilean cut back in distance, added blinkers and survived a stewards inquiry to prevail in Sunday's $100,000 California Flag Handicap at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif. Ridden by Umberto Rispoli, the 4-year-old colt by Uncle Mo was up to nip Ultimate Bango by a head while getting 5 1/2 furlongs on turf in 1:02.13.

Away alertly from his outside post, Galilean tracked pacesetter Mikes Tiznow and Ricardo Gonzalez into and around the far turn and was one length off of him a quarter mile out. As Mikes Tiznow began to shorten stride, Galilean drifted inward some, causing Gonzalez to steady at the sixteenth pole and from there, Galilean was able to outrun Ultimate Bango late.

“Unfortunately, my horse didn't want to switch leads and he was hanging in the whole way,” said Rispoli, who had ridden him for the first time at Del Mar on Aug. 23. “I was obligated to just ride it with him and to try to make him as straight as I can, but he's a huge horse. I got (the win) because he was the (best) horse in the race.”

Fifth to world-class turf miler Mo Forza in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile Handicap on turf Aug. 23, Galilean was off as the 3-2 favorite in a field of five California-bred or sired 3-year-olds and up and paid $5.00, $3.00 and $2.20.

Owned by West Point Thoroughbreds, Denise Barker, William Sandbrook, John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor and Derrick Smith, Galilean, who is out of the El Prado mare Fresia, notched his sixth win, all stakes, in his 12th career start. With the winner's share of $60,000, he now has earnings of $577,098.

“He's a really good horse,” said Sadler who took over training duties five starts back on Feb. 29, 2020. “This is the third stakes we've won with him. … He's got so much class. We changed things up today, running short, but we added blinkers and as you saw, he's got a ton of natural speed. Long range, it's exciting because these Uncle Mo's are becoming great stud prospects and that's very encouraging for him.

“We're excited about the new turf chute here at Santa Anita and we'll look at running him in a stake going six and a half (furlongs) this winter. We'll probably stick with the state-bred program, there's just so much money there.”

Ultimate Bango, who was also adding blinkers in his first start for Mark Glatt, tracked Galilean to the far turn, kept inside of Mikes Tiznow through the stretch drive while making the lead inside the furlong pole, but couldn't keep the winner safe late. Off at 9-2 with Abel Cedillo, Ultimate Bango paid $5.00 and $3.20 while finishing 1 1/4 lengths in front of Rookie Mistake.

Ridden by Mario Gutierrez, Rookie Mistake finished well at 9-1 and paid $4.60 to show.

Fractions on the race were 22.71, 45.09 and 56.29.

Named for the Hi Card Ranch-bred winner of the 2009 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, the California Flag is for eligible California-bred or sired 3-year-olds and up and is part of the lucrative Golden State Series, which is sponsored by the CTBA.

SATONO APOLLON (JPN) (c, 2, Into Mischief–Final Decision, by Super Saver) debuted as a 5-1 chance over this track and distance July 25 and gave an excellent account of himself, finishing two lengths’ second behind a winner that has since doubled up (see below, gate 3). The April foal is out of a half-sister to champion Informed Decision (Monarchos), who was purchased with this foal in utero for $425K at Fasig-Tipton November in 2017. Satono Apollon, an ¥80-million ($737,600) acquisition at last year’s JRHA Select Sale, has a yearling half-sister by Heart’s Cry (Jpn) and a weanling half-sister by Lord Kanaloa (Jpn). A $200K Keeneland September yearling turned $700K OBS April breezer, the dark bay is kin to Good Magic’s yearling full-brother, who fetched $800K at KEESEP last month. The MSW/GSP Glinda the Good is a half-sister to GSW & GISP Take the Ribbon (Chester House); SW Flash Forward (Curlin); SW & GSP Flash Mash (Smarty Jones); and SW Bright Magic (Prized). HARRY BAROWS (c, 3, Uncle Mo–Isobel Baillie {GB}, by Lomitas {GB}) has two wins and a third from three tries on the dirt, having most recently cleared his first allowance condition by an easy 3 1/2 lengths at Chukyo Sept. 12. A half-brother to turf MGSW Isabella Sings (Eskendereya), MSW & GSP Alaura Michelle (Arch) and SW Tobacco Road (Quality Road), Harry Barows was bought back on a bid of $275K at KEESEP in 2018, then realized $425K at OBSAPR last spring. A $975K buyback in foal to this sire at Fasig-Tipton November in 2014, Lady of Fifty was acquired by Teruya Yoshida in 2017 and produced this filly in Kentucky before being sent overseas. LECCE BAROQUE (f, 3, Uncle Mo–My Fast One, by Elusive Quality) looks to give pinhooker Carlo Vaccarezza and Top Line Sales a second Japanese winner in as many weekends, following on the success of Sui (Candy Ride {Arg}) Oct. 3. A $410K Keeneland September yearling turned $525K OBS March breezer, the dark bay could not have been more impressive in graduating by 10 lengths at first asking over this track and distance Feb. 8 and added an equally sparkling nine-length allowance Apr. 25 (see below, gate 10). She was burned up on the pace when the 2-1 second favorite to Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) in the June 21 G3 Unicorn S. (1600m) and makes a much-anticipate return here. Heavily Favored Mo Forza Rolls To Another Victory In City Of Hope Mile Stakes

Heavily favored and on his way. That pretty much sums up the performance tendered by Mo Forza in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 City of Hope Mile at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., as the 4-year-old son of Uncle Mo rallied from off the pace to win by 1 3/4 lengths while in-hand under Flavien Prat. Trained by Peter Miller, Mo Forza got a mile on turf in 1:32.09 and he and his connections now eye an engagement in the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile at Keeneland on Nov. 7.

Breaking alertly from the outside in a field of seven, Mo Forza rated kindly and settled into a fluid rhythm down the backside, about five lengths off pacesetting Blitzkrieg with a half mile to run. Three-deep turning for home, he was hand ridden while lugging in a bit through the lane and won with consummate ease over multiple graded stakes winner Sharp Samurai.

“He pretty much had the same trip as he did in the Del Mar Mile (G2, Aug. 23),” said Prat. “I think he's getting more professional, which is great. Today he showed up again. We can probably go further, but as of right now, he's running pretty well, so I wouldn't change anything.”

A 4 1/4-length winner of the Del Mar Mile Handicap on turf, Mo Forza was off as the 3-5 favorite and paid $3.20, $2.20 and $2.10.

“That's him,” said Ruben Alvarado, assistant to Miller. “He relaxes early and then you saw the way he finished up. He ran today just like he did at Del Mar. We're very happy and we're looking forward to the Breeders' Cup.

Bred in Kentucky by former trainer Barry Abrams' Bardy Farm and owned by Bardy Farm and OG Boss, Mo Forza, who is out of the Unusual Heat mare Inflamed, notched his fifth graded stakes win and he has now won five out of his last six races with four of them over the Santa Anita turf. With six wins from 12 overall starts, he's four for five at one mile on grass and with the winner's share of $120,000, has earnings of $734,460.

Sharp Samurai, who sat a close third behind Blitzkrieg and eventual third-place finisher Bob and Jackie, kept to his task to finish second by 1 1/4 lengths and paid $3.00 and $2.60 as the 7-2 second choice with Juan Hernandez up.

Off at 24-1 with Heriberto Figueroa, Bob and Jackie prevailed by a head over Blitzkrieg and paid $5.60 to show.

Fractions on the race were 22.58, 45.61, 1:08.76 and 1:20.53.
