King’s Stand Target for Golden Pal

Breeders’ Cup hero Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) is targetting the G1 King’s Stand S. as his long term goal. Second on debut, the Ranlo Investments colourbearer filled that position again in the G2 Norfolk S. at this year’s Royal Meeting before returning Stateside to take the Skidmore S. at Saratoga in September. Brought back to Keeneland for the Breeders’ Cup, he turned in a solid effort to win the G2 BC Juvenile Turf Sprint on Nov. 6.

Another likely Royal Ascot contender is Stonestreet Stables’ G1SW Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}). Successful at first asking at Gulfstream Park in Florida, she saluted in the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot in June before winning the G1 Darley Prix Morny by two lengths. Her last race was a fourth in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Keeneland on Nov. 6 racing beyond six furlongs for the first time. She will point to the G1 Commonwealth Cup, also at Royal Ascot.

“We’re really excited about bringing Golden Pal back to Royal Ascot,” said Ward. “It was a great day at Keeneland and we’re really looking forward to 2021. We’re working from the King’s Stand backwards. I think we’ll go for the Commonwealth Cup with Campanelle and let the colt run against the older horses in the five-furlong race.”

On the G2 Queen Mary S. heroine he added, “I think it was maybe the end of the long season for her. We got her back home early after Deauville and prepared for the race, but there was a lot of training involved.

“I don’t want to take anything away from the winner, because she ran great. We’re already looking forward to Royal Ascot next year with Campanelle, too.”

Caracaro Retired to Crestwood

TDN Rising Star‘ Caracaro (Uncle Mo–Peace Time, by War Front) has been retired from racing and will take up stud duties in 2021 at Pope McLean’s Crestwood Farm for a fee of $6,500 LFSN. Campaigned by Global Thoroughbred and Top Racing LLC and conditioned by Gustavo Delgado, the bay was a six-length second-out winner at Gulfstream in January. He was second by a neck in Saratoga’s GIII Peter Pan S. in July, and completed the exacta in the GI Runhappy Travers S. Aug. 8 while earning a 101 Beyer Speed Figure.

“We are excited to stand Caracaro, a quality Grade I performing son of Uncle Mo, who is proving himself to be a sire of sires,” said Pope McLean Sr. “Three of the top four freshman sires by earnings are sons of Uncle Mo. Caracaro was dominant breaking his maiden at Gulfstream Park and was labeled a ‘TDN Rising Star’. He followed that up with a pair of runner-up finishes at Saratoga in the GIII Peter Pan and $1-million Travers. Caracaro has a lot to offer breeders as a Grade I performer by Uncle Mo, out of a War Front mare.”

A $95,000 Keeneland September yearling, Caracaro is a grandson of Grade II winner and GI Kentucky Oaks runner-up Santa Catarina (Unbridled).

Galilean Looking To Add Cary Grant Stakes To Growing Résumé

West Point Thoroughbreds, Denis Barker and William Sandbrook's Galilean will attempt to win the seventh stakes race of his brief career Sunday when he takes on nine rivals in the seventh running of the Cary Grant Stakes at Del Mar near San Diego, Calif.

The seven-furlong dash for 3-year-olds and up bred in California carries a purse of $100,000 and is part of the year-long Golden State Series that provides approximately $4.6 million in purses to Cal breds at racetracks throughout the state.

Galilean is a son of the prolific Kentucky sire Uncle Mo out of the El Prado mare Fresia who was foaled in the Golden State. He was a $60,000 yearling purchase initially, but he became much more than that when he was offered for sale at the Barretts Spring Sale of 2-year-olds in 2018. He was far and away the sales topper at that event as he was hammered home at $600,000 at the behest of West Point Thoroughbred's Terry Finley.

The bay colt was trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer for his 2- and 3-year-old seasons and captured the Barretts Juvenile Stakes at Los Alamitos in the first start of his career. He went on to win two more stakes and place in two others for Hollendorfer before going on the shelf, then being moved to the barn of conditioner John Sadler for his 4-year-old season where he's managed to win a trio of Cal-bred stakes. His current record stands at 12 starts, six wins and $577,098 in purses.

Galilean will be ridden by Umberto Rispoli Sunday under top weight of 124 pounds and has been pegged as the 5/2 favorite in the Cary Grant lineup.

Here's the full field for the feature in post position order with riders and morning line odds:

Newfield Farm or Martin's Appreciated (Tiago Pereira, 20-1); Alfred Pais' Brickyard Ride (Alexis Centeno, 6-1); Jay Em Ess Stable's Take the One O One (Jose Valdivia, Jr., 3-1); Barnhart, Foxx or Naify, et al's Surfing Star (Jessica Pyfer, 12-1); William Peeples' Oliver (Juan Hernandez, 20-1); Slam Dunk Racing or Nentwig's El Tigre Terrible (Flavien Prat, 7/2); Oetman or Pagano's Bettor Trip Nic (Drayden Van Dyke, 15-1); Galilean; Thomsen Racing's Loud Mouth (Abel Cedillo, 12-1), and Reddam Racing's Rookie Mistake (Mario Gutierrez, 8-1).

El Tigre Terrible, a 3-year-old by Smiling Tiger, has won four of nine starts including a pair of stakes tallies, most recently at Del Mar this past summer in the Real Good Deal run under similar conditions as the Cary Grant. Peter Miller trains the bay gelding.

Take the One O One shortens up after a series of two-turn races. The 5-year-old by Acclamation didn't race at all in 2019, but is a double winner this year. The Brian Koriner-trained horse has a bankroll that reads $447,326.

Rookie Mistake has been stakes-placed on four different occasions. The Square Eddie colt is trained by Doug O'Neill.

Both Brickyard Ride and Surfing Star are being ridden by apprentices, an unusual occurrence in a stakes race where their apprentice allowances do not apply. In both cases it has to be seen as a tip of the cap to Centeno and Pyfer and their riding abilities.

First post Sunday for the nine-race card is 12:30.  The Cary Grant is the eight race on the program and should go off around 4 p.m.

Outwork Filly Runs to the Money in Sharp Debut Score at Churchill

8th-Churchill Downs, $87,037, Msw, 11-12, 2yo, f, 6f, 1:10.53, ft, 6 lengths.
ABROGATE (f, 2, Outwork–Hot Coffee, by Burning Roma) took all the money for her debut Thursday at Churchill, broke on top and never looked back in a sharp victory, becoming the 13th winner for her streaking freshman sire (by Uncle Mo). Showing an upbeat worktab highlighted by a local five-furlong gate breeze in 1:00 2/5 (6/46) Nov. 1, the $270,000 Keeneland September grad was bet hard throughout and kicked smoothly from the stalls as a 3-2 chalk. Quickly taking command, the dark bay clicked off a :22.23 quarter before being set upon by Zoom Up (Upstart) nearing the straightaway. Cutting the corner into the lane, Abrogate quickly scooted clear again past the three-sixteenths pole and slammed the door in the final furlong, cruising past the wire in hand six lengths to the good of Zoom Up. The winner’s second dam is a half to 2010’s champion sprinter Big Drama (Montbrook) and MGISW Sheer Drama (Burning Roma). Her dam, a $30,000 Keeneland November purchase in 2015, has a yearling Daredevil filly who sold to Mike Rutherford for $130,000 at Fasig-Tipton October and is now named Thedevilyousay. She produced a colt by Good Samaritan this season before visiting Hard Spun. Sales History: $75,000 Wlg ’18 KEENOV; $270,000 Ylg ’19 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $49,092.
