Uncle Mo Colt Gets Rising Star Nod at Fair Grounds

In a field including six first-time starters, Squire Creek (Uncle Mo) proved much the best, scampering home a six-length winner over the well-related 4-5 choice Wicked Again (Gun Runner) in the six-furlong contest at Fair Grounds Thursday. Off the blocks alertly, the 5-2 second choice vied for the early lead with the well-related Wicked Again through opening fractions of :21.65 and :44.92. Head-to-head with that rival turning for home, the $525,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduate edged ahead in early stretch and blasted clear late en route to an easy victory.

A half-sister to MGSW & GISP Commissioner (A.P. Indy) and GSW & GISP Laugh Track (Distorted Humor), Covenant is also a half to Mythical Bride (Street Cry {Ire}), the dam of champion older horse and GI Breeders' Cup Classic winner Vino Rosso (Curlin). The 9-year-old mare was barren in 2021 but foaled a Constitution colt the following season and was bred back to Curlin.

Uncle Mo’s Bishops Bay Gives Trainer Brad Cox Win #2,000

5th-Fair Grounds, $70,000, Msw, 2-18, 3yo, 6f, 1:10.07, ft, 3/4 length.
BISHOPS BAY (c, 3, Uncle Mo–Catch My Drift {SW & GISP, $280,540}, by Pioneerof the Nile) was a popular wagering choice for his career bow, breaking from the gates as the 1-2 chalk under jockey Florent Geroux. With good early speed from mid pack, the $450,000 Keeneland yearling moved between rivals to just sit just off the flank of pacesetter Ocean City (American Pharoah) through a quick opening quarter in :22.14. Applying consistent pressure to that early leader into the far turn, Bishops Bay took over under his own power as the top pair swung into the turn. A game First Mission (Street Sense) made a late run down the stretch but Bishops Bay had enough of a gap built up to hold off his stablemate by three-quarters of a length for a Brad Cox exacta. Ocean City came home fourth while Unload (Gun Runner) and St. John's (Hard Spun) were the last two home. Catch My Drift, herself an accomplished race mare, is also responsible for Strava (Into Mischief), MSP, $282,340. Her 2-year-old Constitution colt brought $575,000 at last year's Keeneland September Sale and she dropped a filly by Improbable last year before visiting Not This Time for the 2023 season. Sales History: $450,000 Ylg '21 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $42,000. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Kingsbarns Puts in Royal Performance for Tampa Allowance Win

6th-Tampa Bay Downs, $25,500, (NW1X)/Opt. Clm ($75,000), 2-12, 3yo, 1m 40y, 1:40.78, ft, 7 3/4 lengths.
KINGSBARNS (c, 3, Uncle Mo–Lady Tapit {GSP}, by Tapit) made his first start against winners a successful one, dominating his rivals to win by 7 1/4 lengths as the public's 2-5 betting favorite. After scoring in his debut by 1 3/4 lengths at Gulfstream Park a month ago, the $800,000 Fasig-Tipton March Select 2-Year-Old in Training purchase was shipped a few miles north for a first start in allowance company, a choice that proved successful. The bay colt broke smartly from the gate but drifted back in the early going to track the pace set by longshot Sentir Zuliano (Lord Nelson) while in the three path around the first turn and then closer to the rail as he straightened out for the run up the backstretch. The early pacesetter opened up a clear lead on the field behind him and was a handful of lengths in front as he passed the half-mile mark in :46.33, but soon after Kingsbarns was launching his move and was challenging for the lead along the inside midway around the final bend. Angled back out toward the center of the track past the quarter pole, the Uncle Mo colt had easily taken control and remained in command to the wire, drawing away to the handy victory. Kingsbarns is out of a half-sister to GISW Gozzip Girl (Dynaformer), who also produced a 2-year-old colt by Union Rags, who was exported to Saudi Arabia last year, and a yearling half-brother by Gun Runner. Lady Tapit is expecting a Munnings foal this year. Sales Record: $250,000 Ylg '21 FTSAUG; $800,000 2yo '22 FTFMAR. Lifetime Record: 2-2-0-0, $57,300.
