A 300,000gns Book 1 graduate, which made him the sire's clear highest-priced progeny sold at auction last year, the April-foaled bay is a half-brother to the G2 Hungerford S. winner Sacred (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) who reminded everybody what a class act she is last week at Newbury. In the maiden won in recent times by Telescope (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Eminent (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), another interesting contender is the similarly-unraced William Haggas-trained Garden Route (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a son of the G1 S A Nursery winner Cloth Of Cloud (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}) from the family of Artie Schiller who represents Magnier/Shanahan/Nagle/Kantor.

Juddmonte's March-foaled homebred PREPENSE (GB) (Kingman {GB}), scratched from a July 21 engagement at Newbury, is a full-sister to G1 Irish Champion S. fifth and dual Group 2-winning sire Headman (GB) and encounters 10 distaffers in this debut. She is accompanied by her Sir Michael Stoute-trained stablemate Lady Wilbraham (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}), a Cheveley Park Stud homebred half to two black-type performers out of multiple Group 1-placed 1000 Guineas runner-up Spacious (GB) (Nayef). Opposition also features Ralph Beckett trainee Luckin Brew (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), a €190,000 Arqana August full-sister to dual Group 3-winning G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern fourth Antonia De Vega (Ire), who has skipped one diary entry since posting a half-length second over this strip in her July 9 debut; and the Sean Woods-conditioned Canadiansmokeshow (Ire) (U S Navy Flag), who is a €290,000 Goffs Orby half-sister to last term's GI Del Mar Oaks heroine Going Global (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) returning off a July 7 debut third over six furlongs at this venue.

Mighty Ulysses Wins The Henry Cecil

Frankie Dettori marked the end of his brief sabbatical from the Gosdens with a win on the 11-10 favourite Mighty Ulysses (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) in Thursday's Listed Edmondson Hall Solicitors Sir Henry Cecil S. at Newmarket. A close-up fifth in the G1 St James's Palace S. at Royal Ascot, Saeed Suhail's progressive bay was keen on the front end throughout the early stages but had enough in reserve to take control inside the final furlong and beat Alflaila (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths. It is clear that John Gosden believes he has a genuine group 1 horse on his hands. “Coming from so wide in the St James's Palace, his run just petered out the last 40 or 50 yards after he had come to win it,” he said. “He will stay at this trip now and there is a three-year-old only group three [the Thoroughbred S.] to look at. That would be a logical place to go.”

Mighty Ulysses's road to Royal Ascot was unorthodox, with a fifth in Epsom's 10-furlong Listed Blue Riband Trial Apr. 19 followed by an impressive novice win over this trip on the Rowley Mile here May 13 and a second in Haydock's Silver Bowl H. May 21. Nonetheless, collated time performances suggested he was a valid contender in the St James's Palace and he proved it by ending up less than a length off Coroebus (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) having endured a less favourable trip than that peer in the June 14 feature. “It was a bit of a mess-up, as he is a horse that likes a lead,” Dettori said of his . “I found myself in front and I knew it was going to be a sprint, but he managed to get me out of trouble. It went completely the opposite to how I wanted, but he is a talented horse that has got a nice future. He has never had a proper run at it. He will be an interesting horse for next year.”

The listed-winning dam, who has a yearling filly by Lope de Vega (Ire) and a foal full-brother to the winner, hails from the Hascombe and Valiant Studs family of the G1 Coronation S. heroine Rebecca Sharp (GB) (Machiavellian) and this stable's Derby, Eclipse, Irish Champion S. and Arc-winning sensation Golden Horn (GB).

Unraced Ulysses Colt Causes Chesham Upset

There was a shock in the opening Listed Chesham S. on Royal Ascot Saturday as the race's only newcomer Holloway Boy (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) landed the spoils at 40-1. Anchored in rear early by Danny Tudhope, the Karl Burke-trained chestnut stayed on strongly to overhaul the 80-1 shot Pearling Path (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) in the last 50 yards and gain a length success, with Lakota Sioux (Ire) (Sioux Nation) 1 1/2 lengths away in third and the disappointing 11-8 favourite Alfred Munnings (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) out of the frame.
