Pair Of Fillies Take On The Boys In Saturday’s UAE Derby

Saturday's $750,000 UAE Derby (G2) has attracted an international field in keeping with its venue, the Dubai World Cup program at Meydan. American shippers Ambivalent and Lugamo will line up against Japanese contenders as well as a talented home team including fillies Soft Whisper and Mnasek. The only foreign scoring race on the main Road to the Kentucky Derby, the UAE Derby offers points on the 100-40-20-10 scale applicable to the U.S. leaderboard.

Four of the 14 entrants are coming off the Feb. 20 Saudi Derby on Saudi Cup Day – Japan's Pink Kamehameha, who sprang an upset in his dirt debut; third-placer New Treasure, an Irish Group 3 scorer who was also trying dirt for the first time; and the well-fancied Godolphin duo of Rebel's Romance and Soft Whisper, respectively fourth and fifth. All are stretching out from that metric mile to the about 1 3/16 miles of the UAE Derby.

Much more had been expected from Rebel's Romance and Soft Whisper in Saudi, and a return to Meydan could see both offspring of Dubawi bounce back to top form. The previously unbeaten Rebel's Romance had edged next-out UAE 2000 Guineas (G3) winner Mouheeb on this track. A U.S. Triple Crown nominee, Rebel's Romance bids to give trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick their first UAE Derby victory.

Godolphin colleague Saeed bin Suroor, who has won a record eight UAE Derby trophies, relies on Soft Whisper. The highly regarded filly brought a four-race winning streak to Saudi, capped by a seven-length romp in the UAE 1000 Guineas over Mnasek. If we see that Soft Whisper here, the boys could be in trouble. Note that bin Suroor is responsible for the only filly to win the UAE Derby so far, Khawlah (2011).

Mnasek herself has claims. The Doug Watson filly had no chance of catching Soft Whisper thanks to a slow start in the Guineas, but she roared back to outclass her foes by 6 ½ lengths in the UAE Oaks (G3) at this track and trip. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Empire Maker banked 50 points toward the Kentucky Oaks (G1), if connections are inclined to supplement her. Like Soft Whisper, Mnasek gets a four-pound weight concession from the 3-year-old males. Adding to her appeal, both of Watson's past UAE Oaks winners went on to finish second in this race, Polar River (2016) and Rayya (2018).

Carded as the fifth of nine races on the Dubai World Cup program, the UAE Derby is scheduled for 10:05 a.m. (ET), and you can watch and wager at TwinSpires.com. Flatter Colt Stays Perfect In Dubai

Panadol was an eye-catching 7 3/4-length debut winner going a mile at Meydan on a non-carnival card on Feb. 13, and he employed the same tactics in his second start and stakes debut on Saturday by going to the lead and never looking back.

Breaking on terms from the extreme outside barrier, Mickael Barzalona had guided Panadol to the lead by the time they passed under the wire the first time. The advantage down the backstretch was three-quarters of a length while Speight'spercomete (Speightstown) perched three-wide. The stalkers began to close in approaching the quarter pole and the Uruguayan invader El Patriota (Uru) (Ecologo {Arg}) began to make up ground, but none of them proved any match for Panadol, who kicked two lengths clear at the top of the lane. Speight'spercomete bravely saw off the challenge of El Patriota to secure runners-up honours, but Panadol was ultimately three-quarters of a length the best.

Said pilot Mickael Barzalona, “He is the kind of horse we want on this kind of surface, especially in Meydan. Today he felt even greener than on his first race, so I really appreciate that he had a second run this season before going for the UAE Derby. He does the distance well, he has got some good talent, and we will see whether he is able to perform on [Dubai] World Cup night.”

“He has only recently started with us,” said Salem bin Ghadayer. “We had two options with him, either to go directly to the (UAE) Derby or give him one more run, just to give him a little more experience. I spoke with HH Sheikh Hamdan and his opinion was to give him one more run. The horse showed that he could recover well. We hope to carry on till the last goal.”

Panadol is out of the winning Dixieland Band mare Arradoul, and he becomes her third stakes horse and first stakes winner, she having already produced the listed-placed Backwood Bay (Girolamo) and Permanent Vacation (Elusive Quality). Arradoul is a half-sister to the two-time listed winner and multiple group-placed Ender's Sister (A.P. Indy), who produced the GI Forego S. and GI Albert G. Vanderbilt H. winner A.P. Indian (Indian Charlie), as well as the GII Indiana Derby victor Tiz Shea D (Tiznow). Arradoul and Ender's Sister are also siblings to Ender's Shadow (A.P. Indy), a listed winner and Grade III-placed. Arradoul has a 2-year-old filly by Alpha named Alarra, and was bred to Runhappy and Audible in the past two seasons.

Mouheeb To Bypass Saudi Derby

Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's Mouheeb (Flatter), who extended his record to two wins from three starts when taking last week's G3 UAE 2000 Guineas by a neck, will decline an invitation to the $1.5-million Saudi Derby on Feb. 20 and train up to the G2 UAE Derby, worth $750,000, at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night on Mar. 27.

“He will head directly to the UAE Derby and miss the Saudi Derby,” Mohamed Saeed Al Shahi, racing manager for Sheikh Ahmed, told Tamarkuz Media. “He came out of the race well, but His Highness, myself and [trainer] Nicholas [Bachalard] felt he had two tough races and we need to give him a bit more time with the UAE Derby being his main target.”

Mouheeb broke his maiden at first asking at Jebel Ali on Dec. 18 before missing by a head when second to Rebel's Romance (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial on Jan. 14.

Bachalard added, “We thought he had room to progress between his races and he did. I wasn't sure how much, but he definitely has improved with every run. We think he can handle the added distance in the Derby. We were strongly considering the Saudi Derby, but we just felt that the race took too much out of him and we'll wait.”

‘Maturing All At The Right Time’: Undefeated Rebel’s Romance Targeting Saudi Derby, UAE Derby

One of the most exciting horses in training in the UAE is Godolphin's undefeated Rebel's Romance, who has exited his thrilling victory last week (over HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Mouheeb) in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial in proper order. The proverbial sky is the limit for the son of Dubawi, with many exciting options ahead the Charlie Appleby trainee.

“Rebel's Romance is in good form,” Appleby reported. “He came out of the race well and I'm pleased with what he would have learned. He's got back into a nice rhythm at home and the plan is obviously to keep an eye on the Guineas and then hopefully going on to Saudi, but physically I think we'll see some improvements and he's maturing all at the right time.”

The $125,000 UAE 2000 Guineas (G3) over one mile is slated for Feb. 4, while the $1.5 million Saudi Derby is 16 days later over the same distance. Options thereafter include the $150,000 Al Bastakiya (Listed) over the same 9.5 furlongs (March 6) as the $750,000 UAE Derby (G2) on Dubai World Cup's undercard three weeks later.

Mouheeb, per his connections, also remains under consideration for all of the above.

The UAE Derby awards to the winner 100 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
