Mendelssohn Bay Proves Best In UAE 2000 Guineas

MENDELSSOHN BAY (g, 3, Mendelssohn–Reiki Baby, by Curlin), whose sire won the 2018 G2 UAE Derby by a desert and whose broodmare sire counts the G1 Dubai World Cup amongst his conquests, stalked a good pace and kept on gamely through the final 200 metres to win Friday's G3 UAE 2000 Guineas at Meydan Racecourse. Ridden forward by Pat Cosgrave, the dark bay sat just outside of pacesetting Military Artist (Munnings), as that one took the Guineas field along at a decent tempo. Asked to come after the front-runner in the straight, Mendelssohn Bay surged past and continued to find to score comfortably in what is a prep for the Derby, contested over 1900 metres on the World Cup undercard Mar. 30. The winner's stablemate Killer Collect (Collected) spotted his rivals a few lengths at the break and was forced to expend a fair bit of energy to be prominent when push came to shove. Wide into the lane, he fought on bravely to be second ahead of Quartier (Uru) (Matterhorn), who was exiting a runner-up effort to the well-regarded Ma Yetal (Mitole) in the 2000 Guineas Trial last time over the 1400 metres. Mendelssohn Bay was a slow-starting fourth in the same event. The time for the 1600 metres was 1:38.13. Sales history: $125,000 Ylg '22 KEESEP; $85,000 2yo '23 FTMMAY. Fipke Firster The ‘Bee’s’ Knees in Dubai

7th-Meydan, AED82,500, Maiden, 2yo, 1600m, 1:38.92, ft.
SHIRL'S BEE (c, 2, Bee Jersey–Shirl's Soul, by Perfect Soul {Ire}) was the subject of some pre-race buzz and turned in a tough debut effort to stamp himself one to watch in next year's 3-year-old events in Dubai. Nicely into stride from gate two, the homebred colt appeared set to challenge for the lead at the rail, but was taken hold of by Pat Dobbs and immediately began to overrace. More settled as they raced past the half-mile marker, Shirl's Bee faced a potentially adverse set of circumstances when between rivals and on his incorrect lead with about 300 meters to race, but he rebroke as soon as he kicked over to his right leg and showed battling qualities from there to best Lahresh (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) by 1 1/4 lengths. “He's very professional at home, a naturally quick horse,” said Dobbs. “He'll get further but I'm not sure if he'll get further yet. He's better looking than his dad [Bee Jersey, who Dobbs also rode].” Shirl's Bee is the seventh first-crop winner for her Fipke homebred sire (by Jersey Town), who made the first four starts of his career for this trainer at this venue, finishing runner-up to Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}) in the G3 UAE 2000 Guineas in 2017. That same event, to be contested Feb. 10, 2023, could be the next target for Shirl's Bee, who is closely related to Spikes Shirl (Speightstown), MSP, $336,277. The winner is out of an unraced full-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare upsetter Perfect Shirl (Perfect Soul {Ire}), whose 'TDN Rising Star' son Shirl's Speight (Speightstown) won this year's GI Maker's Mark Mile and was the recent runner-up in the GI Breeders' Cup Mile. Shirl's Soul is the dam of a yearling full-sister to Shirl's Bee and foaled a Speightstown colt earlier this year before being bred back to Bee Jersey. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $13,479. —Alan Carasso

Street Sense Colt Goes Three-For-Three In Dubai

Azure Coast (Street Sense) was plucked out of the Gainesway consignment at Keeneland September in 2020 by owner Vladamir Kazakov for $65,000, and that has proven to be an inspired purchase with the colt now three-for-three and a stakes winner after taking Friday's G3 UAE 2000 Guineas on his black-type debut.

Debuting over a mile in Moscow in September, Azure Coast came home a six-length winner. He resurfaced at Meydan for trainer Pavel Vaschenko in December, dropping back to seven furlongs to win a conditions race over the Meydan dirt by a head.

Making his first start since, Azure Coast was off a step slow and was soon dead last and a good 15 lengths off the lead as the trial winner Rawy (Frosted) carved out the pace. Azure Coast began to make up ground under Antonio Fresu as they entered the bend, and in the kind of move rarely seen on the Meydan dirt, he began circling runners out wide and was coming with a full head of stream as they straightened for home. Kiefer (Brz) (Drosselmeyer) and Bendoog (Gun Runner) were among those fighting out the lead in midstretch, but Azure Coast was always coming on ominously, and he swept to the lead passing the furlong pole and eventually hit the line under wraps and two lengths clear. Kiefer held on for second, while the trial runner-up Quality Boone (Arg) (Daniel Boone {Brz}) made up late ground to grab third.

Pedigree Notes

Azure Coast was bred in Kentucky by Emory Hamilton and is the second live foal out of the unplaced Divine Rule (Empire Maker), who has a 2-year-old colt by Blame and a yearling son of Frosted and is barren this year. Divine Rule is a full-sister to Grade III winner Soaring Empire and a half-sister to the multiple Grade II-winning and Grade I-placed Hungry Island (More Than Ready), as well as to the dam of young Kentucky sire and GI Woodward S. winner Preservationist (Arch), all of whom were bred by Hamilton. Azure Coast's third dam, Chic Shirine (Mr. Prospector), won the GI Ashland S., and the Grade/Group 1 winners appearing beneath her include Somali Lemonade, Librisa Breeze (GB), Harmonize and Verrazano. Divine Rule was bought by Five Rings Racing for $25,000 from the Gainesway consignment at Keeneland January in 2020.

‘Such A Fighter’: Mouheeb Sets Stakes Record In UAE 2,000 Guineas

Thursday's UAE 2,000 Guineas at Meydan Racecourse attracted a select field of just six, but produced a thrilling finish with Mouheeb leading in the dying strides to deny Meshakel who made a gallant effort from the front only to be thwarted. The 3-year-old son of Flatter prevailed by a neck on the wire, setting a stakes record in the process.

“I thought we would be a bit closer than we were, but (jockey) Ryan (Curatolo) rode a great race and the horse ran very well,” said winning trainer Nicholas Bachalard. “We are really happy because it's our first win at Meydan. We thought Zhou Storm would go to the lead (to battle Meshakel), but thankfully our horse ran Meshakel down just at the right time. It would have been a shame to get beaten by a head. We're delighted for the team and for Sheikh Ahmed for believing in us. It hasn't been an easy three years for the stable and now we can pay back some of the trust he had in us. (Mouheeb) still holds an invite for the Saudi Derby, but that's only 16 days, so we'll see how he comes out of the race and go from there.”

Slowly away on both his previous outings, a winning debut over 1200m (six furlongs) at Jebel Ali and just conquered in the UAE 2000 Guineas trial three weeks ago, over the same 1600m (one mile), Mouheeb broke alertly this time.

Settled in third by Curatolo, the Flatter colt was probably five lengths off the eventual runner-up entering the straight with Godolphin's Naval Crown splitting them. That one cried enough in the final 300m, fading into third, when Curatolo had to get very serious with Mouheeb who, as he had done in the trial, responded gamely to gain a gutsy success. They posted the fastest time in the history of the race in the process, 1:36.46. I

t was a first Meydan winner, since taking over at Jebel Ali Stables, for trainer Nicholas Bachalard who, from his previous base in Saudi Arabia, did win the 2017 UAE 1000 Guineas with Nashmiah.

It was a second success from Jebel Ali Stables in this race for the trainer's main patron, Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, following in the hoofprints of Market Rally who landed the prize in 2016 for Dhruba Selvaratnam.

Curatolo, riding his first Meydan winner, said: “This horse is such a fighter and to ride my first winner here in a big race is just brilliant.

“I always thought I could get there in that long straight and, credit to the horse who has really fought hard for me. I think he will stay further so I imagine we will look at the UAE Derby but we can enjoy this first!”
