Japanese Horse Of The Year Efforia Retired To Stand At Shadai

2021 Japanese Horse of the Year Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}–Katie's Heart {Jpn}, by Heart's Cry {Jpn}) has been retired from racing and will take up stallion duty at Shadai Stallion Station, owner U Carrot Farm announced on their website. The 5-year-old was pulled up in Sunday's G2 Kyoto Kinen with atrial fibrillation, and, although a Monday morning electrocardiogram showed no abnormalities, the decision was made to retire the 2021 Japanese Champion 3-Year-Old Colt.

Bred by Northern Farm, the colt won his two juvenile starts for trainer Yuichi Shikato in 2020, and then strode to victories in the G3 Tokinorminoru Kinen, and the G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) in succession at three. Second by only a nose to subsequent globetrotter Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in the G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), the bay was back on top in the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) and sealed his dual championship honours with a 3/4-length victory in the G1 Arima Kinen that December.

Winless in three starts as a 4-year-old last year, Efforia made his 5-year-old bow in the G2 Kyoto Kinen on Sunday and retires with a record of 11-6-1-0 and $6,884,415 in earnings.

Out of the three-time winner Katie's Heart, Efforia is a half-brother to two winners, while his dual French listed-winning second dam Katie's First (Kris {GB}) is a half-sister to three-time Japanese champion Hishi Amazon (Theatrical {Ire}) and three other stakes winners. My Katies (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), a half-sister to Katie's Heart, foaled fellow Japanese Horse of the Year and sire Admire Moon (Jpn) (End Sweep).

Kitasan Black Filly Scores Bullseye In The Artemis

Striving to maintain her unbeaten record in Saturday's G3 Artemis S., Ravel (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) managed that feat by a neck over the favoured Liberty Island (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) in the 1600-metre feature in Tokyo.

Sent off as the 6-1 third choice on the back of her one-length triumph in a Kokura maiden in July, the Northern Farm-bred and U Carrot Farm colourbearer was not the quickest away and dropped anchor last but one as Alice Verite (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) established a slight advantage over the pressing duo of Dynato Selene (Jpn) (Red Falx {Jpn}) and Masculine (Jpn) (One And Only {Jpn}). Unhurried on the bend, Ravel swooped widest of all in the lane, but still had most of the field to get by as Alice Verite set sail for home at the quarter-pole.

Closing with gusto, the bay had the leader in her sights inside the final furlong and wore that foe down in deep stretch, before withstanding the late charge of Liberty Island. It was another neck back in third to a game Alice Verite.

Pedigree Notes

By two-time Japanese Horse of the Year Kitasan Black (Jpn), himself a son of Deep Impact (Jpn)'s full-brother Black Tide (Jpn), Ravel is the third black-type winner and third group winner for her sire, whose oldest foals are just 3-year-olds. She joins the colts and Group 2 scorers Gaia Force (Jpn) and Equinox (Jpn), with the latter also second in both the G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) and G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese St Leger). Equinox leaves from gate seven in Sunday's G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn). Like Gaia Force, the bay carries inbreeding to the influential Sunday Silence.

Ravel's damline has inhabited the Land of the Rising Sun since the late 40s, and she is the third foal and winner for G3 Fairy S. third Sambre Et Meuse (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) after the G3 Falcon S. placegetter Westerwald (Jpn) (Novellist {Ire}) and G2 Tulip Sho heroine Namur (Jpn). That daughter of Harbinger (GB) played the bridesmaid in the G1 Shuka Sho (Japanese Fillies St Leger) and was third in the G1 Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) this season.

One of four black-type horses out of her winning dam Vite Marcher (Jpn) (French Deputy), Sambre Et Meuse is a half-sister to none other than 2021 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff victrix Marche Lorraine (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}).

Marche Lorraine Prevails Over Dunbar Road By A Whisker To Steal Distaff

If Breeders' Cup viewers thought the finish of the Sprint, which featured a ding-dong battle between Aloha West and Dr. Schivel, was a nail-biter, Breeders' Cup Distaffers demonstrated we hadn't seen anything yet.

Top betting choices and hot early pacesetters Private Mission, Malathaat, and Shedaresthedevil were overcome midstretch by an arsenal of closers, including Marche Lorraine (JPN) and Dunbar Road scrapping in the final strides. It was Marche Lorraine, who had sat well off the pace early in the 1 1/8-mile contest, who fought her way through under British champion jockey Oisin Murphy, edging Dunbar Road by the narrowest of noses in the photo finish.

The race gave Japanese shippers their second victory of the day, after Loves Only You took the Filly and Mare Turf earlier in the afternoon, also running for trainer Yoshito Yahgi.

Letruska, who had been the heavy 8-5 favorite, had room to run but faded going into the final turn, finishing up tenth.

Malathaat hung on for third in another photo finish over Clariere.

Off at odds of 45-1, Marche Lorraine paid $101.80, $41.00, and $18.80.

Early fractions were blistering at :21.84, :44.97, 1:09.70, and 1:35.28, with a final time of 1:47.67.

U. Carrot Farm owns Marche Lorraine, who was bred in Japan by Northern Farm. The 5-year-old mare is the daughter of Orfevre and French Deputy mare Vite Marcher. She came to the race off a win in the Breeders' Gold Cup Stakes on Aug. 12 at Mombetsu. Earlier this year, she won both the nine-furlong Tck Jo-O Hai and the eleven-furlong Empress Hai. Marche Lorraine has found success on both turf and dirt, and has excelled on a variety of track conditions in her dirt races.

Champion Cesario Passes at 19

Cesario (Jpn) (Special Week {Jpn}–Kirov Premiere {GB}, by Sadler's Wells), named Japanese Champion 3-Year-Old Filly in 2005, passed away due to a uterine hemorrhage at Northern Farm on Feb. 27, Netkeiba reported on Sunday. An increasingly influential broodmare with three sons at stud-Epiphaneia (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S.), Leontes (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) and Saturnalia (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn})–she was 19.

“I was just surprised by the suddenness of it and I feIt that my chest tightened,” said Northern Farm's Katsumi Yoshida to Netkeiba. “In addition to the brilliant track record of winning the U.S./Japan Oaks, but [she] also [was] the brilliant broodmare who produced three sires–Epiphaneia (Jpn) who produced the fillies' triple crown winner [Daring Tact (Jpn)], Leontes (Jpn) whose son [Pink Kamehameha (Jpn)] won the Saudi Derby recently, and Saturnalia (Jpn) who entered the stud this year. I'm very sorry that Cesario, who laid the foundation for the ranch, has passed away, but now I want her to rest in peace.”

Bred by Northern Farm, the dark bay raced for U. Carrot Farm and trainer Katsuhiko Sumii. She won a one-mile race when unveiled at Hanshin in December of 2004 and followed up in the Kanchiku Sho in January of 2005. Another win, in the Flower Cup that March was followed by a runner-up effort in the Japanese 1000 Guineas a month later. Cesario captured the Japanese Oaks in her final start in her native land, and then traveled Stateside to salute in the GI American Oak at Hollywood Park. It was the first Grade I win in the United States by a horse bred in Japan and her final racecourse appearance. She retired with a mark of 6-5-1-0- and $2,578,568 in earnings.

As a broodmare, Cesario has excelled, leaving two champions and two Classic winners among her three Group 1 winners. She first visited the late King Kamehameha (Jpn) for her first two season (2006/07) which resulted in the winning colt Twelfth Night (Jpn) and the unraced mare Viola (Jpn). Barren in 2009, she produced G1 Japanese St Leger and G1 Japan Cup winner Epiphaneia (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S.) that next year, who was also runner-up in both the G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas and G1 Japanese Derby. As a sire, his best progeny has been 2020 Japanese Filly Triple Crown heroine Daring Tact (Jpn) to date. He's currently a resident of Shadai Stallion Station and commands a fee of ¥10,000,000.

Her placed filly of 2011, Rosalind (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S.), is already the dam of dual Japanese Group 2 winner Authority (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}). Next was the winning Harbinger (GB) gelding Claudio (Jpn) and he was followed by one of Cesario's champion sons-G1 Asahi Hai Futurity S. victor Leontes (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}), named the Japanese Champion 2-Year-Old Colt of 2015 and now a stallion at the Breeders' Stallion Station. Two full-siblings to Leontes follow-the G2 Hopeful S. third Globe Theatre (Jpn) and the winning filly Celia (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Having already thrown a Classic winner and a champion, Cesario's third black-type winner is Saturnalia (Jpn), by King Kamehameha's best son Lord Kanaloa (Jpn). The 5-year-old, who won the G1 Hopeful S. at two, added the Japanese 2000 Guineas in 2019 and was second in the G1 Arima Kinen before retiring to Shadai Stallion Station for 2021 at a fee of ¥6,000,000.

The 4-year-old filly First Folio (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) and Cesario's 2018 colt Lupercalia (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn} have both saluted the judge, the latter on Jan. 30 at Chukyo. Her final foal is a yearling filly by Lord Kanaloa (Jpn), and she was carrying to that sire at the time of her passing.
