Sharp Azteca Sold To Japan’s Shizunai Stallion Station

Three Chimneys Farm's Sharp Azteca (Freud), winner of the GI Cigar Mile at Aqueduct and one of the top freshman sires of 2022, has been sold to Japan to stand stud at Shizunai Stallion Station in 2024, the Japanese Racing Association announced Friday. The move is subject to his passing quarantine restrictions.

A leading sire of 2-year-olds last year, Sharp Azteca is responsible for progeny like Tyler's Tribe and Sharp Aza Tack.

Echo Again Victorious In Oaklawn Debut

7th-Oaklawn, $103,000, Alw, 3-30, (NW1RX), 3yo, 1m, 1:37.94, ft, 1 1/4 lengths.
ECHO AGAIN (c, 3, Gun Runner–Teardrop {SP}, by Tapit) earned 'TDN Rising Star' status with a commanding 6 3/4-length debut win at Saratoga last summer. Tested for class, he faded to seventh in the GIII Iroquois S. against a stacked field led by Curly Jack (Good Magic), Jace's Road (Quality Road), and Confidence Game (Candy Ride {Arg}). Third in the Remington Springboard Mile S. to cap his juvenile season, he returned to be sixth after setting the pace early in the GIII Lecomte S. behind Instant Coffee (Bolt d'Oro). With the advantage of Lasix for the first time Thursday, Echo Again let Tyler's Tribe (Sharp Azteca) handle work at the front, taking back to be third as Western Ghent (American Pharoah) kept that pacesetter honest. Inching closer into the far turn as the speed began to grow weary, he took over with a three-wide move at the top of the lane and came home nicely, holding off a closing El Tomate (Runhappy) to win by 1 1/4 lengths as 4-5 chalk. Teardrop, herself a full-sister to G1SP Farrier and GSW War Echo as well as a half to GI Forego S. winner Pyro (Pulpit), has already produced Pneumatic (Uncle Mo), SW & GSP, $275,390. She has a 2-year-old Copper Bullet filly named Copperdrop and foaled a full-brother to Echo Again last year before returning to Gun Runner for 2023. Lifetime Record: SP, 5-2-0-1, $168,175. Tyler’s Tribe Fires Oaklawn Bullet

Iowa-bred sensation Tyler's Tribe (Sharp Azteca) worked five furlongs in 1:00 flat Saturday morning at Oaklawn Park, his third breeze since receiving a month off following a second bleeding incident when third in the Dec. 9 Advent S. in Hot Springs. He also bled and was vanned off after being eased home in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in November. He previously went three furlongs in :36.40 (3/8) Feb. 18 and a half-mile in :48.60 (13/66) Mar. 4.

“Doing good,” said trainer and co-owner Tim Martin. “I'm just kind of working him and seeing where we're at. Working him and scoping him and he's looking good so far.”

The conditioner indicated that he would like to start Tyler's Tribe before the end of the Oaklawn meet May 6, but said he had no specific race in mind for the gelding's sophomore debut.

“I want to make sure he's right,” Martin said. “He's come back doing good and scoped clean every time. We're good, knock on wood.”

Tyler's Tribe won his first five trips to the post–four in stakes company–by nearly 60 lengths combined over sprint trips, and instead of stretching out for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile, elected to stick to the Juvenile Turf Sprint. The 4-5 chalk in the Advent S., he set a reasonable early pace, but weakened late and scoped dirty yet again.

To date, Tyler's Tribe has amassed a record of 5-0-1 from seven starts overall and earnings of $320,169.

Speightster’s Count de Monet Upsets Tyler’s Tribe In Advent S.

Two-for-two at Horseshoe Indianapolis earlier this summer, Count de Monet didn't receive a lot of respect at the tote board, going off for his stakes debut at Oaklawn at 15-1. Despite wanting a similar front-running position as Tyler's Tribe, Count de Monet was outrun to the lead by that rival and boxed in against the fence by Too Much Info (Maclean's Music). Still covered up around the turn as Tyler's Tribe paced the field through opening fractions of :22.33 and :46.11, Count de Monet began to make up ground when angled out for the stretch drive. As the pacesetter grew weary with a furlong to run, he overtook the lead with an outside move and drove clear for the comfortable score in Oaklawn's opening day feature. The winner has a weanling half-sister by Exaggerator named Ravenex and his dam was bred back to Echo Town for a 2023 foal. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.
