Breeders’ Cup Pledge Raises Over $140,000 For New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program announced today that early estimate of funds raised during its Breeders' Cup Pledge will be more than $140,000. This year's total was driven by a record eight horses with pledging connections—Knicks Go, Aloha West, Life Is Good, Golden Pal, Ce Ce, Corniche, Pizza Bianca and Twilight Gleaming (IRE)—winning their races on Future Stars Friday and Championship Saturday.

Additional pledges are still coming in and final donations are still being tallied. Now in its 12th year, the Pledge has raised more than $940,000, with 100 percent of funds going directly to support the program's rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming efforts.

“Eclipse and our partners consider Thoroughbred aftercare of paramount importance and it is our duty and pleasure to support New Vocations,” said Aron Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. “It is with great pride that we're able to send a portion of Aloha West's purse winnings from his Breeders' Cup Sprint victory to support an organization that's always ready to help a rehoming or retraining prospect.

“The partnership that owns Aloha West is comprised of a healthy blend of veteran owners who understand the importance of aftercare and newcomers, as well,” he added. “To see these newcomers learning about aftercare and supporting the cause is gratifying and good for the sport.”

In addition to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, winning connections include Brad H. Cox (Knicks Go); China Horse Club, WinStar Farm and Todd Pletcher (Life Is Good); Coolmore (Golden Pal); Michael W. McCarthy (Ce Ce); Speedway Stables and Bob Baffert (Corniche); Bobby Flay (Pizza Bianca); and Stonestreet Stables (Twilight Gleaming). This year's pledge participants also include Al Shaqab Racing, Albaugh Family Stables, Jim Bakke, Richard Baltas, Bonne Chance Farm, Bing Bush & the Abbondanza Racing Partners, Cannon Thoroughbreds, Bradley Thoroughbreds, DJ Stable, Michael Dubb, Brad Grady, Hat Creek Racing, LNJ Foxwoods, Paulo H. Lobo, Madaket Stables, Kenny McPeek, Elizabeth M. Merryman, Peter Miller, MyRacehorse, Patricia's Hope LLC, Richard Ravin, Larry Rivelli, J. Kirk & Judy Robison, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, SF Racing, Joe Sharp, Siena Farm, Spendthrift Farm, St. Elias Stable, Starlight Racing, Stud RDI, Three Diamonds Farm, Treadway Racing Stable, West Point Thoroughbreds and White Birch Farm.

“It was truly amazing to have eight pledged contenders win this year,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Program Thoroughbred Program Director. “We were thrilled with the number of owners and trainers who joined the Pledge to support our aftercare efforts and mission to rehab, retrain and rehome these incredible equine athletes.”

Irad Ortiz, Jr. Voted Jockey Of The Week After Fourth Straight Shoemaker Award

Three-time Eclipse Award winner Irad Ortiz, Jr. travelled to the West Coast from his base in New York for the races at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club during Breeders' Cup week. He returned to New York having won four stakes at Del Mar and put an exclamation point on his outstanding week by winning a stakes race at Belmont Park on Sunday. His accomplishments earned Jockey of the Week Nov. 1 through Nov. 7. The award, which is voted on by a panel of racing experts, is for jockeys who are members of the Jockeys' Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.

Breeders' Cup weekend began with “Future Stars Friday” with all stakes races dedicated to two-year-olds. Riding for trainer John Sadler, Ortiz, Jr. was aboard Big Switch in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies Presented by PNC. Off in post position six in the field of eight, Big Switch took command in upper stretch and drew off to a convincing 2-3/4 lengths victory in 1:22.39 for six furlongs.

”I didn't have to do much,” said Ortiz. “I had a good trip. She just ran and that's all there was to it.”

Trainer Wesley Ward and Ortiz, Jr. combined for the third straight year to win the G2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. This year Ortiz, Jr. was aboard Twilight Gleaming (IRE). The fastest out of the gate, Twilight Gleaming (IRE) led all the way to win by a half-length over Go Bears Go covering the five furlongs on the turf in :56.24.

On Saturday, the duo of trainer Wesley Ward and Ortiz, Jr. struck again with Golden Pal in the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint. Golden Pal went right to the lead and was never pressured, posting a 1-1/4-length win for the five furlongs on the turf in: 54.75.

“I was happy to get the lead easily and he responded to me when I asked him for the run down the stretch,” said Ortiz, Jr.

The next race saw Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher give a leg up to Ortiz, Jr. on Life Is Good in the G1 Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Life Is Good took command out of the gate and cruised to 5-3/4 lengths victory after a mild challenge from Ginobili.

“I had the perfect trip,” said Ortiz, Jr. “When we go to the quarter pole, he re-broke for me. What a nice horse to ride.”

Ortiz, Jr. was awarded the Bill Shoemaker Award for the fourth year in a row as Outstanding Jockey at the Breeders' Cup.

Back to Belmont Park on Sunday, Ortiz, Jr. was aboard Orglandes (FR) for trainer Chad Brown in the Zagora for fillies and mares three-years-old and up going 1-1/2 miles on the Widener turf. Off as the favorite in the field of seven, Orglandes (FR) got up right before the wire to win by a neck over Beautiful Love and Joel Rosario in 2:29.28. Ortiz, Jr. also collected the leading rider title at Belmont Park.

Ortiz, Jr. outpolled Mitchell Murrill with the most wins for the week, Jose L. Ortiz with two G1 Breeders' Cup victories, Joel Rosario with two G1 Breeders' Cup wins and Chantal Sutherland with nine wins for the week.

Irad Ortiz Jr. won his fourth consecutive Bill Shoemaker Award, given to the most outstanding jockey at the Breeders' Cup World Championships at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif.

The Shoemaker Award goes to the jockey who won the most races in the 14 World Championship races this weekend with the tiebreaker being a 10-3-1 point system for second- through fourth-place finishes.

Ortiz and William Buick both won three races, but Ortiz also had a runner-up finish and three fourth-place finishes while Buick finished fifth with his only other mount.

Ortiz won the first Championship race of the weekend on Twilight Gleaming (IRE) in the Grade 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and then added Saturday victories in the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint with Golden Pal and the G1 Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile with Life Is Good.

Amid Drama, Modern Games A Top-Class Breeders’ Cup Winner

Del Mar, CA–Friday's Breeders' Cup card was not short of drama, both the kind one welcomes-like when Twilight Gleaming (Ire) (National Defense {Ire}) flew the barriers and held off a late charge by the plucky Go Bears Go (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) to win the GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint-and also the type one dreads.

Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) provided team Europe with its first victory of the 2022 World Championships when roaring down the middle the stretch to take the card-closing GI Juvenile Turf by 1 1/2 lengths, but it was roars of dismay, not joy, that William Buick and Godolphin's chestnut colt returned to from the Del Mar crowd, with a frenzy of confusion just moments before the start leading to the post-time favourite being withdrawn and, sensationally, re-instated into the field, but permitted to run not as a wagering entity but purse-money only.

The drama began when Modern Games reared in the one stall, causing his Charlie Appleby-trained stablemate Albahr (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to become upset in the two stall, flipping over under Frankie Dettori. As the remainder of the field was backed out, Modern Games and William Buick were released out the front of the one gate by a stalls handlers, cantering up the track for a few strides before being corralled by an outrider. Albahr was withdrawn from the race-he and Dettori each pronounced healthy, minus a few cuts on Albahr, in the aftermath-and amidst the confusion Modern Games was likewise withdrawn, with attending veterinarians behind the gate under the impression that Modern Games had broken through the front of the gate, unaware that an attendant had released him, and the assumed breakthrough and prior rearing incident, where he had also hit the back of the stalls, presumed grounds for scratching.

There were contrasting scenes, then, of elation from connections and uproar from disgruntled punters denied their chance to play the 'favourite' as Modern Games-the last-out eye-catching winner of the G3 Somerville S. at Newmarket on Sept. 23-registered his third straight win, and provided Appleby with his third win in the race and fourth Breeders' Cup tally overall.

Modern Games has earned the right to be genuinely considered among the leading contenders for next year's Classics as the juveniles head into winter quarters. Buick said in the post-race press conference that he hoped the drama surrounding the race wouldn't cast a shadow over the horse's performance or future potential.

“There was no need for what happened to happen,” Buick said. “It was unfortunate but thankfully everyone came around to do the right thing and let the horse run, because that was the only fair outcome. It's unfortunate because Breeders' Cup is a great event, it's the world championships and it's a bit disappointing because it takes some of the shine away from the horse, and he was a great winner of the race. He was very impressive and showed a lot of good qualities, and he's a good Juvenile Turf winner. But it was no one's fault, it was just what happened.”

The Juvenile Turf Sprint kicked off the five Breeders' Cup races on Future Stars Friday, and there was no haziness in that result, with Barbara Banke's £75,000 Goffs Orby purchase Twilight Gleaming (Ire) (National Defense {Ire}) pinging the gates and leading the field a merry dance before holding off a late surge from Amo Racing's G2 Railway S. winner Go Bears Go to provide her young Irish National Stud-based sire with a first group winner.

Twilight Gleaming was, in fact, the first winner for the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner National Defense when graduating by 7 1/2 lengths in a 'TDN Rising Star' performance at Belmont Park in May before shipping to Royal Ascot to finish a narrow second in the G2 Queen Mary S. Twilight Gleaming and Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) are the poster children of the recent strategy undertaken by Banke to raid the European yearling sales-largely with the assist of agent Ben McElroy-and hand-pick Royal Ascot prospects for Ward. While Campanelle could be considered something of a Royal Ascot specialist, having returned this year to win a drama-filled G1 Commonwealth Cup, Twilight Gleaming will surely hold a special place in the mind of her owner, winning the first Breeders' Cup race staged less than two months since Banke was appointed the organization's chairman.

Twilight Gleaming had cut an eye-catching figure training at Del Mar throughout the week, and in fact such is her constitution that Ward explained post-race that she had been sent to France for her win in the Listed Prix de la Vallee d'Auge in August as a traveling companion to Campanelle, who herself leapt off all fours leaving the gates before trailing in a puzzling last. Little doubt, then, that Twilight Gleaming will head off on her travels again next year, with redemption at Royal Ascot among the likely goals with Ward nominating the Commonwealth Cup or the King's Stand as targets.

In the aftermath of Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus})'s victory in the GI Juvenile Fillies Turf, her jubilant owner/breeder Bobby Flay noted that Royal Ascot could likewise be on his filly's agenda. Like Banke, Flay has long been a proponent of farming the best bloodstock worldwide and bringing it back to America, and Pizza Bianca is the first foal out of White Hot (Ire), a Galileo (Ire) three-quarter sister to Derby winner Pour Moi (Ire) bought by Flay for 1.25-million gns from Camas Park Stud at Tattersalls October in 2014. Near the rear early, Pizza Bianca threaded her way through the field to lead home a blanket finish for the minor placings that was topped in the end by the Francis Graffard-trained Malavath (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), with George Boughey's Cachet (Ire) (Aclaim {Ire}) taking fourth and Dave Loughnane's Hello You (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) fifth. All three trainers were narrowly denied their first Breeders' Cup wins, but will also doubtlessly be back with chances in the near future. It must have been a particularly encouraging first visit to Del Mar for Loughnane, trainer of both Hello You and Go Bears Go.
