CARMAthon to Return Aug. 20

California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) is revamping its summer online fundraiser which will be live on TVG Saturday, Aug. 20–sharing the GI Del Mar Oaks Day coverage. Heartwarming and uplifting stories of Thoroughbred aftercare will be shared on CARMA's Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts throughout the month of August and all-day Aug. 20.

“CARMAthon has been a huge win for us, especially given the circumstances surrounding the pandemic,” said Billy Koch, CARMA President and Founder and Managing Partner of Little Red Feather Racing. “The racing industry has really stepped up to support Thoroughbred aftercare and we're hoping to see the same enthusiasm this year as well.”

The fundraiser hopes to generate around $150,000 in online donations from the racing industry and equine enthusiasts through CARMA's website. The donations will help fund its grant program, which assists more than 20 Thoroughbred aftercare charities, as well as support other initiatives serving the organization's mission.

“The last two years of CARMAthon marked an outpouring of unprecedented support from the racing community for aftercare. We couldn't be more pleased with how this event has evolved and we're proud to bring it back for round three,” said CARMA Executive Director, Lucinda Lovitt. “We expect another successful year as we continue to rally awareness and support to assist our big-hearted athletes onto their second careers.”

Retired racehorse lovers are encouraged to help by making a donation to the campaign, and to share pictures of their off-track-Thoroughbred on social media using #CARMAthon.

Donations for CARMAthon can be made on the CARMA website starting Thursday, Aug. 4 and can continue through Saturday, August 20th. For more information visit CARMA4horses.org or contact Lucinda Lovitt at (626) 574-6622 or lucinda@carma4horses.org.

Report: TVG to Be Renamed, Focus More on Sports Betting

According to a report on the website Legals Sports Report, TVG is about to get a new look, one that could include less emphasis on horse racing.

The website is reporting that TVG will be renamed FanDuel TV, which will become the first “watch and wager TV Network in the U.S.” TVG2 will be renamed FanDuel Racing. The FanDuel Group, a huge player in the sports wagering and daily fantasy sports markets, is the parent company of TVG. The changes are expected to take place in September.

Programming geared towards sports betting will begin each morning at 5 a.m. eastern and will conclude at 9 a.m. The 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. slot will be what the website calls a “SportsCenter-style show” that will be hosted by Kay Adams. Adams is a former host on the NFL Network and her hiring is hailed by the website as a “big-name acquisition.”

The good news for racing fans is that TVG plans to continue to highlight racing through much of the remainder of the day. However, the live racing programming will include cut-ins and sports updates from FanDuel talent. It also appears that the emphasis for the nighttime program will be sports and sports wagering. According to the report, from 9 p.m on the programming will be filled by “tertiary sports with watch and wager rights, such as Korean football, pickleball and Chinese basketball.”

The news of the rebranding came just one day after it was announced that current Chief Marketing Officer Mike Raffensperger had been appointed to the newly created position of chief commercial officer. According to the report, “Raffensperger will assume oversight for FanDuel's content and programming assets, including TVG.”

FanDuel bought TVG for $50 million in 2009.

Taiba Favored in Haskell

GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby hero and 'TDN Rising Star' Taiba (Gun Runner) was given the morning-line nod from post postion two at odds of 7-5 in the 55th GI TVG.com Haskell Invitational S. Saturday at Monmouth Park. The nine-furlong centerpiece of the summer meeting at the Jersey Shore offers the winner a fees-paid berth in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland Nov. 5.

It was a little more than three years ago that Maximum Security (New Year's Day) won the Haskell on a day where temperatures soared so high during the early afternoon that the race was delayed until late in the evening. The heat is on again this weekend, with forecast highs in the low to mid 90s. Trainer Bob Baffert is back in action following his three-month suspension and is hopeful he's shipped across the horse who can give him a record-extending 10th victory in the Haskell. Mike Smith, aboard Authentic (Into Mischief) in 2020, has the call.

“I don't think about records,” Baffert said. “I just think about sending a good horse there and I've sent some really great ones. I hope this guy is the same type of horse I've been bringing up there. We know he's very talented. He has to break well. Then it's going to be up to Mike.”

Not far behind him on the morning-line at 3-2 is undefeated MGISW 'Rising Star' Jack Christopher (Munnings), who will be in stall seven of eight. The flashy chestnut tries two turns for the first time Saturday off a good-looking score in the GI Woody Stephens S. June 11. Trainer Chad Brown looks for a second Haskell, having saddled Good Magic (Curlin) to win in 2018.

The rest of the field is as follows: Cyberknife (Gun Runner), post 1, 6-1; One Time Willard (Micromanage), post 3, 30-1; Howling Time (Not This Time), post 4, 10-1; King of Hollywood (Palace Malice), post 5, 30-1; White Abarrio (Race Day), post 6, 5-1; Benevengo (Gormley) post 8, 20-1.
