TVG’s Weekend Coverage Features Dubai World Cup, Florida Derby

Greatest Honour will try to stamp his ticket to the Kentucky Derby (G1) in Saturday's $750,000 Curlin Florida Derby (GI) and TVG, America's horse racing network, will be live from Gulfstream Park with expanded coverage of the fourteen-race card which highlights a star-studded Saturday that also features the $12 million Dubai World Cup (G1), $750,000 UAE Derby (G2) and $250,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) from Turfway Park.

Todd Schrupp, Christina Blacker, Gabby Gaudet and Caton Bredar will be broadcasting live from Gulfstream Park with exclusive interviews and expert analysis of the fourteen-race card which features ten stakes races. The $750,000 Curlin Florida Derby is a top-tier Kentucky Derby prep race with 100-40-20-10 on the line for the top four finishers. Greatest Honour, undefeated in both starts as a three-year-old for Shug McGaughey, has been installed as the 6-5 morning line favorite and will face off against ten rivals including California-invader Spielberg for trainer Bob Baffert. Spielberg will mark the first Florida Derby starter for Baffert.

Fans of international racing can tune in at 7:30 a.m. ET/4:30 a.m. PT as coverage of the Dubai World Cup card begins. TVG's Joaquin Jaime and Scott Hazelton will be anchoring the broadcast remotely as some of the top horses in the world face off at Meydan for $26.5 million in purses featuring nine graded stakes races. The $12 million Dubai World Cup (G1) has drawn a global field of fourteen contenders with Mystic Guide, a homebred for Godolphin, tabbed as the morning line favorite at odds of 5-2. Trained by Michael Stidham, the four-year-old son of Ghostzapper won the Razorback Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn in January and will have Luis Saez in the irons.

The road to the Kentucky Derby will have an international flair on Saturday with the $750,000 UAE Derby which offers 100-40-20-10 qualifying points to the top four finishers. The field includes the winner of the Saudi Derby, Japan's Pink Kamehameha as well as Mnsasek, a filly tackling male rivals after winning the UAE Oaks (G3) in February.

TVG's on-site coverage from Gulfstream Park and the coverage of the Dubai World Cup Card is presented by Runhappy.

Caleb Keller will be reporting live from Turfway Park on Saturday night as the track hosts the $250,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3), the featured event on a twelve-race card with five additional stakes races . A field of twelve will be competing for qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby with 100-40-20-10 points at stake for the top four finishers including Tarantino for trainer Rodolphe Brisset. The son of Pioneerof the Nile will have Florent Geroux in the irons as he attempts to notch his first graded stakes victory.

The live coverage will continue at Santa Anita and Mike Joyce, Simon Bray and Dave Weaver will be reporting live from California throughout the nine-race card. Fillies and mares will take center stage on the turf in the $100,000 Santa Ana Stakes (G3) which has drawn a field of eight including Altea, owned by MyRacehorse and trained by Michael McCarthy.

In addition to racing from Gulfstream, Santa Anita and Turfway Park, TVG will feature racing from Oaklawn Park, Aqueduct and more. Fans can tune in on TVG, TVG2 and the Watch TVG app which is available on Amazon Fire, Roku and connected Apple TV devices.

TVG’s Weekend Broadcast Features Live Coverage Of Louisiana Derby Day

Mandaloun, the winner of the Risen Star Stakes (G2) in February, will continue his road to the Kentucky Derby (G1) and face seven rivals in Saturday's $1 million Louisiana Derby (G2) from Fair Grounds. TVG will be broadcasting live from Louisiana with expanded coverage of the supersized fourteen-race card which features seven stakes races.

TVG's Mike Joyce, Joaquin Jaime and Scott Hazelton will be reporting live from Fair Grounds with exclusive interviews, selections and expert handicapping analysis. The Louisiana Derby is one of four graded stakes races on the card and is a top-tier Kentucky Derby prep race with 100-40-20-10 qualifying points to the top four finishers. The race will feature a rematch of the top three finishers from both the Risen Star Stakes (G2) and the Lecomte Stakes (G3) – Mandaloun for trainer Brad Cox, Proxy for Michael Stidham and the Steve Asmussen-trained Midnight Bourbon.

Saturday's card at Fair Grounds will also feature a prep race for the Kentucky Oaks (G1) – the $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks (G2). The race has drawn a field of eight sophomore fillies including Clairiere, a homebred daughter of Curlin for Stonestreet Stables. Trained by Steve Asmussen, she was triumphant in her 3-year-old debut in the Rachel Alexandra Stakes (G2) and will have Joe Talamo aboard.

Todd Schrupp, Christina Blacker and Caleb Keller will be live at Santa Anita on Saturday and Simon Bray will be contributing to the from the studio. The featured race on the nine-race card is the $100,000 San Luis Rey Stakes (G3) which will feature the return to action for LNJ Foxwood's multiple graded stakes winner United. Trained by Richard Mandella, Flavien Prat will be aboard as the 6-year-old gelded son of Giant's Causeway tries to notch his eighth career victory.

The stakes action will continue at Gulfstream Park on Saturday and TVG's Gabby Gaudet will be reporting live from the track with insights and interviews throughout the twelve-race card which features the $100,000 Hurricane Bertie Stakes (G3), a sprint for fillies and mares. The race has attracted a contentious field of eight including Slam Dunk, a four-year-old daughter of Into Mischief stepping up to stakes company after an allowance win for Shug McGaughey in February.

In addition to racing from Fair Grounds, Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park, TVG will feature racing from Oaklawn Park, Aqueduct and more. Fans can tune in on TVG, TVG2 and the Watch TVG app which is available on Amazon Fire, Roku and connected Apple TV devices.

TVG’s Christina Blacker Joins Writers’ Room

With active hands-on experience in two arenas in racing–television and presentation as well as horsemanship–Christina Blacker is one of a handful of people in the industry with that variety of perspective. Tuesday morning, the TVG reporter, analyst and host joined the TDN Writers' Room presented by Keeneland for an expansive discussion on growing the sport. Calling in via Zoom as the Green Group Guest of the Week, Blacker also talked about the triumph of her husband Dan's recent first Grade I winner as a trainer and her I Am Horse Racing initiative.

Reflecting on the top-level success of the Blacker barn's Hit the Road (More Than Ready) in the GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile S., Blacker said, “The challenging thing about training is that you can put in all the time, the blood, sweat and tears, but until you have a horse that really has some ability, I don't feel like a lot of trainers get the chance to show what they can do. I've always believed that Dan would be playing at this level, and that he had the horsemanship skills and the background and was putting in the effort and hard work to deserve this kind of success. But until a horse of this ability came along, he hasn't had the opportunity to show people how he can train and manage a good horse. I think one of the things I'm most proud of with the way Dan has campaigned [Hit the Road] is he pulled back and was patient when he needed to. Now I think you're really seeing that patience pay off. Hopefully his trajectory will continue to improve.”

Asked about the I Am Horse Racing project to educate the public about the sport's people and their care for horses, Blacker said, “The idea for it came from a group of women who are interested and all have investments in the game. We felt that a couple of years ago when the safety issues were so prevalent at Santa Anita, there was so much coverage, and in those reports was a real implication that people in horse racing don't love horses, don't care about horses, aren't treating these horses with the respect that they deserve. So we wanted to try to put something forward that was educational that was out there to say, 'We recognize that there's a problem, that safety needs to be addressed, but look at these thousands of people across the country who are dedicated to these horses.' We wanted people to know that from the top to the bottom, there are people invested in this game because their core passion is the animal.”

Cherwa: Joke About Hitting Swiss Skydiver Gets Albarado’s Interview Squashed By TVG

Los Angeles Times racing writer John Cherwa took a moment to congratulate TVG and Santa Anita for quick reactions to an inappropriate comment made by jockey Robby Albarado over the weekend. Albarado piloted champion filly Swiss Skydiver to victory in her 2021 debut in the Grade 1 Beholder Mile on Saturday.

While speaking with TVG's Britney Eurton on the Arcadia, Calif., track's live feed, Albarado was asked to describe his relationship to the gutsy winner of the 2020 Preakness over eventual Horse of the Year Authentic.

“You love this filly. You call her your girlfriend. How special is she to you?” asked Eurton.

“Well, I hit her once. I hope she still loves me,” was Albarado's answer.

TVG had been taping the interview with plans to air it, but chose not to after hearing Albarado's comment. Santa Anita reportedly also scrubbed the interview from its archive and departed from its usual practice of including quotes from the track feed in its circulations to media.

Albarado was charged in 2011 with assaulting his wife and later entered a guilty plea to a Class A misdemeanor for attempting to interfere with a witness in the case. In 2012, he was convicted of fourth degree wanton assault related to a fight with a girlfriend. That conviction was later overturned on appeal.

Cherwa also reported that Albarado later received a three-day suspension for his ride in the race because he raised his arm above his shoulder while striking the filly, contrary to California's revised whip rules.
