Letter to the Editor: Joseph S. Bertino Jr.

Like many TDN readers, I use online betting for playing the races. I had used one online site for a few years and felt that I needed another site that offered more “rewards”, thus I signed up for DRF.com bets. Nice rewards and free past performances as you accumulate “points.”

Imagine my surprise to find out that I cannot place bets at Churchill Downs, Turfway, Fairgrounds and any other track that Churchill owns. And I cannot watch online live video either.

Now, I don't know what the squabble is between DRF and Churchill, but it's unfair to the horse player. Another example of how the “big boys” really don't care much about the small bettors like myself and tens of thousands of others. So, what is the problem, DRF and Churchill? I'm sure we would like to hear why this is.

So, DRF and Churchill, fix this ASAP. Give us horse players big and small a break.  There are a lot of online betting sites now, easy to change if you are unwilling to make the fix.

Sincerely,

Joseph S. Bertino Jr.

Abel Cedillo To Winter At Turfway Park

Jockey Abel Cedillo will pack up his tack from Del Mar and move east for the winter to Turfway Park for their meeting that starts Nov. 29. He has every intention of returning to the seaside oval next summer, but says the timing just seemed right to try something new.

“I just want to go because I've never gone out of California,” Cedillo says. “I'm still young so I don't want to wait until I'm too old to make the move. I'll take my chance right now.”

Cedillo, who has captured riding titles at Golden Gate, Santa Anita and Del Mar, returned to racing after a riding accident sidelined him early during this summer's Del Mar meet. He suffered a broken bone in his neck and was sidelined for the remainder of the meet. He avoided having surgery and instead went through a rigorous rehab.

“It took six weeks,” Cedillo says. “I was working out in the gym by myself and doing my routine. Sometimes in the morning I get up and I'm a little sore. But soon as I start working I feel better. I feel a hundred percent now.”

Turfway, Claiborne Partner for ‘Make Your Mare’ Series

Turfway Park Racing & Gaming and Claiborne Farm have teamed up to present a three-race series which will reward top-three-finishing fillies and mares a future stallion credit when they retire from racing.

Dubbed the “Make Your Mare” series, the top three finishers of the Dec. 2 Holiday Inaugural S., Dec. 9 My Charmer S., and Jan. 13 Likely Exchange S. will all receive “Claiborne Credit” on a $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500 scale to be applied to future stallion fees.

“We're very excited to partner with Claiborne Farm for this series of three stakes races from Turfway Park,” said Gary Palmisano, Jr., executive director of racing for Churchill Downs Incorporated. “These races will not only give owners and trainers another chance to get their fillies and mares black-type placing, but also an opportunity at credit towards a top stallion pairing when they retire. We know there are a lot of quality racing/broodmare prospects sold each November at the sales in Lexington, so this would be a great opportunity for some of the horses purchased to try and add to their resumes.”

Claiborne president Walker Hancock added, “We are pleased to partner with Turfway on their new 'Make Your Mare' Series. This will provide owners the opportunity to breed to one of our top-class stallions at an earned discounted rate, while giving our stallions more black-type mares to bolster their stud books.”

Claiborne Credits will only be applied to the top three finishing horses, but may be transferred with the horse if the ownership were to change. The credits will expire at the end of the 2025 breeding season.
