Three $1-Million Races Head Record Kentucky Downs Stakes Schedule

For the first time in its 31-year history, Kentucky Downs is offering three $1-million races during its six-date 2021 meet. Added to the track's GII Calumet Turf Cup, Kentucky Downs' $1-million trio also will feature the GIII Turf Sprint and GIII WinStar Mint Million.

Kentucky Downs will stage 16 stakes worth a track-record total of $10 million, including $4.85 million in purse supplements for registered Kentucky-bred horses. The all-grass meet runs Sept. 5, 6, 8, 9, 11 and 12.

“Purses are the economic engine of the racing industry, and Kentucky Downs is proud to be a leader helping Kentucky stamp itself as the premier racing circuit in America,” said Ron Winchell, Kentucky Downs' co-owner and managing partner with Marc Falcone. “We're only six days, but winning one of our stakes–or even one of our overnight races–can make the entire year for an owner. Many horsemen tell us that money they earn at our meet gets promptly reinvested in the industry the next week at Keeneland's September Yearling sale. Such investment impacts countless small businesses that are part of Kentucky's equine agribusiness.”

A total of nine Kentucky Downs stakes received purse hikes. That includes the GIII Ladies Turf jumping from $500,000 to $750,000. The Music City for 3-year-old fillies and Untapable for 2-year-old fillies, worth $400,000 in their inaugural runnings last year, now enjoy $500,000 purses.

The Kentucky Downs' stakes purses reflect contributions of up to 50% from the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund (KTDF) for horses born in and sired by stallions in the Commonwealth. The 2021 meet's Kentucky-bred stakes supplements were approved Tuesday by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission's KTDF Advisory Committee.

After Hard-Luck Trip In Breeders’ Cup, Imprimis Gearing Up For 2021 Campaign

Breeze Easy LLC's two-time graded-stakes winner Imprimis, exiting a hard-luck trip in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (Grade 1), returned to the work tab with a three-furlong move over Gulfstream Park's inner turf course Sunday.

Imprimis covered the distance in 36.06 seconds for trainer Joe Orseno. The 5-year-old gelding was within striking distance in the stretch of the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint only to check sharply after being moved inside by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. and lost all chance, finishing 13th.

“It was just a tune-up. We're going to scope him and we're going to look at him and see if we need to evaluate anything, so that's why I wanted to get this into him,” Orseno said. “I was real happy with him. I got 36 [seconds], the clockers just sent me 36-and-1 and out in 48, so it was excellent.”

A stakes winner in each of his three seasons of racing, starting with the 2018 Jim McKay Turf Sprint at Pimlico Race Course, Imprimis won the Shakertown (G2) in 2019 and the Turf Sprint (G2) Sept. 12 at Kentucky Downs as his prep for the Breeders' Cup.

Imprimis is undefeated in four starts at Gulfstream, including the 2019 Silks Run, his last time over the track. Orseno is looking at the $75,000 Janus on New Year's Day and the $100,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint Feb. 13, both for 4-year-olds up sprinting five furlongs on the grass.

“We're talking about it. February, for sure, and then his races will be spaced out two months apart,” Orseno said. “We were thinking about Saudi Arabia for about a minute and a half and then decided we didn't want to do that to him at the risk of knocking him out for the rest of the year.

“He doesn't need to do that. If I keep him on that every two months, his next race will be Keeneland and then Belmont and then Saratoga and it's spread out pretty good,” he added. “At least we have a plan. Let's hope he cooperates.”

Get Stormy Stays Sprinting at Keeneland

Gary Barber’s Got Stormy (Get Stormy) cuts even farther back to the shortest distance of her career in Friday’s GIII Buffalo Trace Franklin County S. over 5 1/2 turfy furlongs at Keeneland. Twice a Grade I winner going a mile last term and second behind fellow female and last Saturday’s GI First Lady S. heroine Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) in the GI Breeders’ Cup Mile, the Mark Casse pupil failed to find her best form through the first half of 2020. She was fourth at 1-5 in the GIII Lambholm South Endeavour S. at Tampa in February, and was upset by a neck in Santa Anita’s GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita a month later. Faring no better when fourth in both Belmont’s June 3 GIII Beaugay S. and July 4 GIII Poker S., she stepped up when attempting to defend her title in Saratoga’s open GI Fourstardave H. Aug. 22 to be second, good for a 103 Beyer Speed Figure. Got Stormy paired up that number last time when successfully cutting back to a quirky 6 1/2 panels for the GIII Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint S. over soft ground Sept. 12, besting five returning rivals. Winning Envelope (More Than Ready) and Into Mystic (Into Mischief) completed the exacta and trifecta, respectively. New challengers include Wesley Ward trainee Stillwater Cove (Quality Road), who was second in last April’s Limestone Turf Sprint S. here and was last seen taking a course-and-distance allowance just under a year ago; and near millionaire Chalon (Dialed In), who scratched out of two spots at Pimlico last week for this and makes her turf debut in career start number 23.
