Angel Of Empire, Rocket Can Among Quartet To Train Saturday During Churchill’s Special Time For Derby/Oaks Hopefuls

Two weeks remain until the $3-million Kentucky Derby (G1) and it was a quiet Saturday morning at Churchill Downs where only four Derby hopefuls trained during the special 15-minute period reserved for Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks (G1) contenders from 7:30-7:45 a.m. (ET).

TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) runner-up Disarm and Holy Bull (G3) winner Rocket Can galloped about 1 ½ miles at 7:30 a.m. while Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Angel of Empire and Wood Memorial (G2) runner-up Hit Show jogged about one mile.

The quiet Saturday morning was the opposite of last year on this day when eight Derby and Oaks contenders recorded published workouts. However, five Kentucky Derby contenders recorded published workouts Friday: Angel of Empire (six furlongs, 1:13.40); Forte (five furlongs, 1:02); Hit Show (five furlongs, 1:01); Tapit Trice (four furlongs, :48.60), and Verifying (five furlongs, 1:01).

Rocket Can, trained by Bill Mott, is scheduled to breeze Sunday while the next workouts for Rebel (G2) winner Confidence Game and Blue Grass (G1) fourth-place finisher Sun Thunder are still to be determined, according to their respective connections.

Sunland Park Derby (G3) winner Wild On Ice had an easy day in Barn 43 for trainer Joel Marr following his two-mile gallop Friday. Marr said Wild On Ice could work again Thursday or Friday.

Japan-bred UAE Derby (G2) winner Derma Sotogake  and Japan-bred third-place finisher Continuar had a regular training day Saturday. Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby representative Kate Hunter stated Friday on “Inside Churchill Downs” that the duo could record published workouts early next week.

Monday will begin the first of 11 days for the Kentucky Derby Morning Works Show presented by TwinSpires.com featuring expert handicappers Joe Kristufek, Scott Shapiro, and Kaitlin Free along with an array of popular industry figures such as former leading rider Rosie Napravnik and Churchill Downs Track Announcer Travis Stone.

The one-hour program will be streamed live on www.KentuckyDerby.com/works from 7-8 a.m. starting Monday and will feature the 15-minute exclusive training period for Kentucky Derby and Oaks contenders from 7:30-7:45 a.m. Fans can also watch the broadcast across several of the Kentucky Derby social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

Practical Move Breezes For Yakteen At Santa Anita, Will Work Once More Before Flying To Louisville

Practical Move returned to the work tab Friday following his win in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby April 8.

Pointed to the May 6 Kentucky Derby, Practical Move worked a half mile at Santa Anita Park in company with rising star Kangaroo Court shortly after the 6:30 a.m. renovation break for trainer Tim Yakteen. Both 3-year-olds were officially timed in 47.0 seconds. Yakteen clocked the drill in the same time with a strong gallop-out in “59 seconds and change,” the trainer said.

“They both worked well, very happy,” Yakteen added.

Practical Move is slated to be joined in the Kentucky Derby starting gate by stablemate Reincarnate. Yakteen said Reincarnate, who most recently was third in both the G2 Rebel Stakes and G1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park, is scheduled to work on Saturday.

Both Practical Move and Reincarnate will also have one additional work at Santa Anita next Friday before heading to Churchill Downs the following morning.

Practical Move figures to be among the top betting choices in the 1 ¼-mile Kentucky Derby. He is riding a three-race winning streak and has never been off the board for owners Leslie A. Amestoy, Jean Pierre Amestoy and Roger K. Beasley. Prior to his gutsy nose win over Mandarin Hero in the Santa Anita Derby, the son of Practical Joke won the G2 San Felipe here March 4 and the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity in December.

Practical Move and Reincarnate aren't the only two horses heading to Churchill Downs next week for Yakteen. Kangaroo Court and the ascending turf star Johannes will also make the trip to run on the Kentucky Derby undercard. Kangaroo Court is ticketed for the G2 Pat Day Mile while Johannes will contest the G2 American Turf at 1 1/16 miles.

“We have our fingers crossed,” Yakteen said.

Johannes has won all three starts since being switched to turf for his maiden win here on Dec. 31. The Nyquist colt followed up graduation day with a win in the March 5 Baffle Stakes here over the hillside turf course and a scintillating 3 ½-length score in the Pasadena Stakes when stretched to a mile. He is a homebred for Cuyathy LLC.

Kangaroo Court will be stepping out of the statebred ranks for the first time in the Pat Day Mile, which is open to all 3-year-olds. The gelding by Dads Caps was a 14 ¼-length maiden winner last August at Del Mar before heading to the sidelines. He returned March 4 to take down a statebred allowance here in a swift 1:08.75 for six furlongs. He then won the Echo Eddie for statebreds going 6 ½ furlongs on April 8.

Kangaroo Court was purchased for a mere $7,500 at the 2021 Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Fall Mixed Sale by owner George Sharp. He has banked $197,200 in four starts.

‘He’s Going To Have To Improve Again’: Wood Memorial Upsetter Lord Miles Breezes At Gulfstream

Vegso Racing Stables' Lord Miles returned to the Gulfstream Park worktab Friday morning, breezing a half-mile in 47.05 seconds in preparation for a scheduled start in the May 5 Kentucky Derby (G1).

The 3-year-old son of Curlin, who worked in company with stablemate Apocalypso over a freshly renovated surface shortly after 9 a.m., produced the second-fastest clocking of 33 workouts recorded at the distance in his first breeze since pulling off a 59-1 upset in the Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct April 8.

“It was a good easy work but probably a tad faster than ideal, but he did it well within himself and he was moving well – that's the important thing,” said trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., whose Derby-bound colt was ridden Friday morning by exercise rider Andrew Thomas.

“He came out of the Wood well. He shipped back and he's held his weight. His weight and his energy seem to be in good order,” he added.

Lord Miles is scheduled to complete his serious preparation for the Derby at Gulfstream.

“He'll come back, all being well, and work next Friday. He'll go five furlongs and we'll ship Saturday or Sunday to Churchill Downs,” Joseph said.

Lord Miles sits sixth on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard based on qualifying points thanks to his victory in the Wood, in which he shook off bumping shortly after the start to grab an outside stalking position before getting the better of favored Hit Show by a nose following a heated stretch run.

“He won the Wood, but his race in the Wood isn't going to be good enough to win the Derby. He's going to have to improve again. But as we've learned, you've got to get there to for a chance to win. They're young horses who can improve. If he can make a leap forward again, he'll be right there. We want to think the distance is within his parameter.”

Lord Miles debuted impressively while closing from off the pace in a six-furlong maiden special weight race at Gulfstream Nov. 19 and drawing away to a 5 ¾ victory. He came back to finish third in the one-turn mile Mucho Macho Man Jan. 1 with a late surge to miss second by a neck. The Kentucky-bred colt disappointed with a sixth-place finish in the Feb. 4 Holy Bull (G3) at 1 1/16 miles that was compromised by an awkward start. He encountered bumping at the start of the March 11 Tampa Bay Derby (G3) before finishing fifth.

“The biggest drawback with him has been his inconsistency. Sometimes he comes off the bridle and gives himself too much to do,” Joseph said. “Hopefully, his race in the Wood will help him mentally and give him some confidence.”

‘He’s Growing Physically But Has A Great Mind’: Likely Favorite Forte Leads Friday’s Derby Workers

Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's likely Kentucky Derby favorite Forte recorded his first published workout at Churchill Downs on Friday morning when he breezed five furlongs in 1:02 outside stablemate Bright Future.

Along with Forte's five-furlong move, other Kentucky Derby contenders to record workouts were Angel of Empire (six furlongs, 1:13.40); Hit Show (five furlongs, 1:01); Tapit Trice (four furlongs, :48.60) and Verifying (five furlongs, 1:01). Currently No. 21 on the Kentucky Derby preference list is Jace's Road, who worked six furlongs in 1:13.40.

Florida Derby (GI) winner Forte was ridden in his workout by jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. and started about a half-length behind Bright Future. The duo easily completed an opening quarter-mile fraction of :26.20. The duo began to pick up their momentum around the far turn through a three-furlong split of :38.60. Forte galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.40 and completed seven furlongs in 1:27.

“It was a normal work from him, which is exactly what you want to see,” Ortiz said. “I let him start going at the five-furlong pole and just get into stride. Going into the turn he stayed with the other horse. When I tipped him out in the stretch he responded well and galloped out nicely. His mind has changed a lot this year from last year. I'm happy with that. He's growing physically but has a great mind.”

Just prior to Forte's move, Whisper Hill Farm and Gainesway Stable's Blue Grass (G1) winner Tapit Trice recorded his half-mile move with regular exercise rider Amelia Green in the saddle. Tapit Trice completed an opening eighth-mile in :12.80 and galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.

“These workouts become super, super important,” Pletcher said. “They keep you up at night.

“Tapit Trice started out with a nice, steady breeze. He was on the bridle throughout He seemed to get over the track very comfortably.

“If you look at Forte's progression numbers wise, he's made that progression forward in each start. Same thing with Tapit Trice. What I'm encouraged by with both of them is how they handled the mile-and-an-eighth and how they handled their final prep. It gives you confidence stretching out in the Derby. Forte is a very straightforward horse to train. He's pushbutton. When Irad asked him to sit just off of his workmate this morning he did just that. When you press 'go', he quickly accelerated to put a head in front of his workmate.”

Trainer Brad Cox's foursome of Angel of Empire, Hit Show, Jace's Road and Verifying all worked at 7:30 a.m. ET. Angel of Empire was paired outside Jace's Road and the duo completed eighth-mile fractions of :12.20, :23.80, :35.60 and 1:00.40. They galloped out seven furlongs in 1:26.40. Jockey Flavien Prat was aboard Albaugh Family Stable's Angel of Empire while Florent Geroux was in the boot on West Point Thoroughbreds and Albaugh Family Stable's Jace's Road.

In Cox's next set, Gary and Mary West's Hit Show, ridden by exercise rider Edvin Vargas, worked inside Westerberg, Mrs. John Magnier, Jonathan Poulin, Derrick Smith and Michael B. Tabor's Verifying, who had jockey Tyler Gaffalione aboard. Hit Show and Verifying began their move at the 4 ½-furlong marker through splits of :12.60, :24.40 and :48.60.

“Angel of Empire is the type of horse we've been confident all along that can handle the mile-and-a-quarter distance in the Derby,” Cox said. “He excelled going the longer distance in the Arkansas Derby and moves like the type of horse that will like a route of ground.

“Jace's Road is sitting on the outside looking in but worked well this morning with Angel of Empire. I thought they handled themselves well and galloped out strongly.

“Hit Show just missed in the Wood Memorial. It was a pretty tough beat that day but he showed us that as the distances get longer he can handle the route of ground as well.

“Verifying, like Hit Show, was a tough beat about an hour before in the Blue Grass. Going back in his career, I don't' think he was quite ready when we ran him in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He started to mature over the winter and I'm still a little confused on his effort in the Rebel. He was in contention, then dropped back and then rallied in the stretch. He put things together in the Blue Grass and has a lot of tactical speed that should play to his advantage in the Derby.”

The special 15-minute training window for Kentucky Derby and Longines Kentucky Oaks contenders will begin Saturday at 7:30 a.m. ET.

Kentucky Derby contenders will wear a yellow saddle towel while Oaks contenders will sport a pink saddle towel.

The first morning of the Kentucky Derby Morning Works show is Monday.

Blue Grass Stakes (G1) third-place finisher Blazing Sevens worked a half-mile in :48.80 at Keeneland. The Chad Brown trainee is scheduled to arrive in his Barn 25 at Churchill Downs on Monday.

Regular exercise rider Peter Roman was aboard Blazing Sevens, who raced in blinkers for the first time in the Toyota Blue Grass and wore them for today's breeze at 7:40 a.m. following the first track maintenance period. (Click here for a video of the work.)

Assistants Baldo Hernandez and Josh Flores wore matching smiles after the work by Blazing Sevens, who is scheduled to go to Churchill Downs Monday for a possible start in the Kentucky Derby (G1).

“He breezed very well and we're very happy with it,” Flores said. “That's what you want to see from the first breeze back (after a race).”

Rebel (G2) winner Confidence Game continues to train at Churchill Downs but his next work is still to be determined.
