Red Route One Breezes Towards Belmont

Winchell Thoroughbreds' homebred Red Route One (Gun Runner), beaten just under five lengths when fourth to National Treasure (Quality Road) in the GI Preakness S. May 20, worked an easy half-mile in :50.85 at Belmont Park Monday morning as he readies for his next start in the GI Belmont S. Presented by NYRA Bets June 10.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, who conditioned Creator (Tapit) to victory in the 2016 renewal, the chestnut worked on his own and NYRA clockers caught him galloping out five furlongs in 1:04.

“It was good, he seems like he got something out of it,” said Toby Sheets, Asmussen's Belmont-based assistant.

Third to 'TDN Rising Star' and future champion Forte (Violence) in the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity at two, Red Route One was runner-up in the GIII Southwest S. and GII Rebel S., but was only sixth in the GI Arkansas Derby. He was victorious in the Bath House Row S. Apr. 22 and went for an early move at Old Hilltop while racing handier than is his custom and finished evenly.

Belmont Notes: Red Route One Works At Belmont, Raise Cain Breezes At Keeneland

Winchell Thoroughbreds' Kentucky homebred Red Route One posted a half-mile breeze in :50.85 over the Belmont Park main track Monday in preparation for the $1.5-million Belmont Stakes (G1) on June 10.

Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, the chestnut Gun Runner colt worked solo under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s. NYRA clockers caught him galloping out five furlongs in 1:04.

Toby Sheets, Asmussen's Belmont-based assistant, said the work went well.

“It was good,” said Sheets. “He seems like he got something out of it.”

Red Route One, who will vie to provide Asmussen his second Belmont Stakes win after he saddled Creator to victory in 2016, most recently finished a closing fourth in the Preakness (G1) on May 20 at Pimlico. He stalked moderate fractions in the Preakness and made a mild bid down the lane under Joel Rosario to come up 4 3/4 lengths shy of the victorious National Treasure, who is expected to breeze Tuesday at Belmont in preparation for the third jewel of the Triple Crown.

Red Route One has finished on-the-board in three graded events when second in the Rebel (G2) and Southwest (G3) this year at Oaklawn Park, and third in the Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland as a juvenile.

Red Route One's most recent trip to the winner's circle came two starts back when posting a determined head triumph over possible returning Belmont Stakes rival Tapit Shoes in the nine-furlong Bath House Row on April 22 at Oaklawn.

At Keeneland, Andrew and Rania Warren's Raise Cain breezed five furlongs in 1:05 flat for trainer Ben Colebrook.

The Violence colt, winner of the Gotham (G3) March 4 at Aqueduct, was a troubled eighth last time out in the Kentucky Derby (G1), finishing 10 lengths back of the victorious Mage. He had his first work back on May 22 at Keeneland, covering a half-mile in :50.80.

Pedigree could be on Raise Cain's side in the 1 1/2-mile Belmont being sired by a son of Medaglia d'Oro, runner-up in the 2002 Belmont Stakes. His dam, Lemon Belle, is by Lemon Drop Kid, who won the 1999 Belmont.

Belmont Notes: Raise Cain To Breeze Monday At Keeneland

Andrew and Rania Warren's Gotham (G3) winner Raise Cain will breeze on Monday at Keeneland in preparation for the $1.5-million Belmont Stakes (G1) June 10.

Trained by Ben Colebrook, the Violence colt was a troubled eighth last out in the Kentucky Derby (G1), finishing 10 lengths back of the victorious Mage. He had his first work back on May 22 at Keeneland, covering a half-mile in :50.80.

“He's come out of the Derby good and he'll work again tomorrow,” said Colebrook by phone from Kentucky. “If all is well, we'll ship up right before the race. He'll do all his work here.”

Raise Cain saved ground in ninth position through the early running of the Derby and made his move into the stretch only to be stymied by the fading pace presser Kingsbarns.

“He had a good trip early, but late in the race he got wiped out by Kingsbarns stopping and Disarm was coming and we got sandwiched and shuffled back. But he came running again to get up for eighth,” Colebrook said.

The $180,000 Keeneland September yearling sale purchase rose to prominence with his 7 1/2-length Gotham romp in March at Aqueduct Racetrack traveling a one-turn mile over a muddy and sealed main track.

Recruiter and Carmel Road dueled through swift splits of :22.52 and :45.53 in the one-mile Gotham, but Raise Cain, who was 11th of 14 early, advanced willingly under Jose Lezcano, overcoming traffic problems at the quarter pole before swinging four-wide to take command with an eighth to run and drawing clear.

The talented bay exited that effort to finish a late-moving fifth into slow fractions in the Blue Grass (G1) in April at Keeneland, closing from 10th-of-11 in the nine-furlong route won by Belmont Stakes rival Tapit Trice.

With a moderate pace often the norm in the 12-furlong Belmont, Colebrook said he is entrusting jockey Junior Alvarado with working out a more prominent trip.

“I don't think we'll get as much pace in the Belmont as we got in the Gotham unfortunately. So, we'll have to work out a different trip,” Colebrook said. “In the Blue Grass, we were just a little too far back off of slow fractions. If there's slow fractions in the Belmont, we're going to have to be a little bit closer and I think Junior will be great for that.”

Colebrook, a former assistant for New York-based Christophe Clement, enjoyed past success in 2018 at Belmont with Limousine Liberal, who he saddled to a third-place finish in the Metropolitan (G1) and a neck victory over Whitmore in the Belmont Sprint Championship (G2).

“I remember going there the first time when I was working for Christophe Clement and everyone tells you how big it is,” said Colebrook of the famous 'Big Sandy'. “But then you get out there as an exercise rider and the sheer size and scope of the place is like nothing else. It's a different atmosphere for a horse with those sweeping turns.”

Pedigree could be on Raise Cain's side in the Belmont being sired by a son of Medaglia d'Oro, who finished second in the 2002 Belmont Stakes. His dam, Lemon Belle, is by Lemon Drop Kid, who won the 1999 Belmont Stakes.

There's significant route depth to Raise Cain's profile as his second dam is multiple graded stakes winner Queenie Belle, who produced millionaire and 2010 Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic (G1) winner Unrivaled Belle.

Kentucky Derby Runner-Up Two Phil’s To Aim For Ohio Derby

Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up Two Phil's will bypass the Belmont Stakes (G1) June 10 and instead point to the $500,000 Ohio Derby (G3) going 1 1/8 miles June 24 at Thistledown, trainer Larry Rivelli told BloodHorse.

The Hard Spun colt breezed five furlongs Sunday at Rivelli's base at Hawthorne Race Course, clocking :59.80, the fastest of 15 timed moves at the distance. The drill marked his second breeze since finishing second to Mage in first jewel of the Triple Crown May 6.

Rivelli decided to pass on the middle jewel, the Preakness (G1) May 20 at Pimlico, because of the short turnaround time.

Two Phil's, owned by breeder Phil Sagan, Patricia's Hope, and Madaket Stables, won the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) March 25 at Turfway Park on the road to the Kentucky Derby and was second in the Lecomte (G3) Jan. 21 and a third in the Risen Star (G2) Feb.18, both at Fair Grounds in his first two outings this year.
