Flay Follows Winning Recipe From 2016, Buys Interest In We The People

Celebrity chef and renowned restaurateur Bobby Flay, who bought into Creator ahead of his 2016 Belmont Stakes (G1) triumph, has acquired an interest in leading Belmont Stakes (G1) contender We the People, an impressive 10 ¼-length winner of the Peter Pan Stakes (G3) in his most recent start. Flay joins the ownership group that includes WinStar Farm, CMNWLTH, and Siena Farm, and he is hopeful that the expanded partnership can create another winning recipe for the Belmont Stakes.

“I'm thrilled to join the We the People team,” said Flay. “I have been an admirer of this colt since he started his career at the beginning of this year. I want to thank Lisa and Kenny Troutt of WinStar for giving me this exciting opportunity. Winning the 2016 Belmont with Creator will be a moment that me and my family will never forget.”

WinStar president, CEO, and racing manager Elliott Walden, said, “We appreciate Bobby wanting to partner with us again. He is great for the business, and a great partner.”

Trained by Rodolphe Brisset, We the People overpowered his rivals under Flavien Prat in winning the Peter Pan geared down inside the final 70 yards. The 3-year-old colt by WinStar stallion Constitution is produced from the Tiznow mare Letchworth, a half sister to graded stakes winner Stratford Hill and stakes winner and graded stakes-placed Armistice Day. This is also the family of multiple graded stakes winners and millionaires Harmony Lodge and Arkansas Derby (G1) winners Graeme Hall and Magnum Moon.

Bred in Kentucky by Henley Farms Inc., We the People broke his maiden at Oaklawn Park in his career debut in February and followed up that facile 5 ¾-length score with a five-length allowance win, also at Oaklawn. His only defeat came when seventh, beaten 13 1/4 lengths, in the Arkansas Derby (G1) on April 2. We the People turned in his final work ahead of the 1 ½-mile Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown, breezing four furlongs in :47.59 on Saturday, June 4.

WinStar bought We the People for $230,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale. He has won his three races by a combined 21 lengths and has earned $230,250.

Ethereal Road Reportedly Out of Belmont

According to a tweet from New York Racing Association racing publicist Ryan Martin, the D. Wayne Lukas-trained Ethereal Road (Quality Road) has a quarter crack and will not ship to New York for Saturday's GI Belmont S.

A maiden winner in his second start around two turns this past January, the $90,000 Keeneland September graduate ran a monster race to be second in the GII Rebel S. before finishing off the board in the GI Toyota Blue Grass S. and GIII Stonestreet Lexington S. on consecutive weekends in April. Nevertheless, Ethereal Road was entered for the GI Kentucky Derby and drew gate 20, but his 11th-hour scratching allowed the first of two horses on the also-eligible list, Rich Strike (Keen Ice), to draw into the race. The chestnut would go on to upset the Run for the Roses at 80-1, while Ethereal Road entered the Belmont conversation with a convincing victory in the Sir Barton S. on the GI Preakness S. undercard May 21.

According to the Martin tweet, Ethereal Road will be pointed for the GII Jim Dandy S. and GI Runhappy Travers S. this summer at Saratoga.

Report: Howling Time Will Skip Belmont, Target Matt Winn

Dale Romans trainee Howling Time will bypass this weekend's Belmont Stakes and will instead take aim at the Grade 3 Matt Winn, according to a tweet by the Daily Racing Form's Marty McGee.

Howling Time had been on the list of probable Belmont starters prior to his June 4 work at Churchill Downs. There, he covered four furlongs in :48.80, finishing 43 of 124 at the distance.

Howling Time most recently won an allowance optional claiming race at Churchill Downs impressively, drawing away by five lengths at the wire of the race over 1 1/16 miles.

Previously, he won the Street Sense Stakes at Churchill in his 2-year-old season, and finished off the board in the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club, G2 Fountain of Youth and G3 Lexington.

Romans trains Howling Time for longtime client Albaugh Family Stables. He is the son of Not This Time and Arch mare Werewolf and was bred in Kentucky by Springhouse Farm.

Post positions will be drawn for the Belmont on June 7.

Peter Pan Runner-Up Golden Glider Has Final Breeze For Belmont Stakes

Golden Glider, owned by Gary Barber in partnership with Manfred and Penny Conrad, breezed a half-mile in :49.90 Sunday over Big Sandy in preparation for the Belmont Stakes (G1) June 11.

NYRA clockers caught Golden Glider, with exercise rider Kylie Wellington up, through a quarter-mile in :26.20 and out in 1:02.80.

Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse, who won the 2019 Belmont Stakes with Sir Winston, said he was pleased with the work.

“I thought he worked really well. He settled early, which is what you want out of a Belmont horse, and flew home,” Casse said.

The Ghostzapper chestnut was off-the-board in a trio of graded starts on the Kentucky Derby trail in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis [5th], Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby [4th] and Grade 1 Blue Grass [4th].

He finished a distant second last out to returning rival We the People in the nine-furlong Peter Pan (G3) on May 14 in the traditional local prep for the Belmont Stakes, which was contested over a good and sealed main track. The top-two finishers of the Peter Pan had their Belmont Stakes entry and starting fees waived.

Golden Glider is following a similar path to Sir Winston, who also graduated at Woodbine and competed in the Tampa Bay Derby [5th] and Blue Grass [7th] before earning a free berth in the Belmont via the Peter Pan [2nd].

Casse said he is confident that Golden Glider will get the distance and that jockey Dylan Davis can work out a stalking trip.

“I'm not worried about the mile and a half, it's just how long it's going to take him,” said Casse, with a laugh. “He's a one-paced type of horse, so I'm hoping he'll have a similar trip like Sir Winston. In his previous races, Sir Winston used to come from the clouds but in the Belmont, Joel Rosario kept him close enough and I could see the same thing happening Saturday with Dylan.”

Davis, who won his first NYRA riding title at the Aqueduct Racetrack winter meet, will look to secure his first victory in a Triple Crown race.
