Morny Runner-Up Trident Sold To Hong Kong

Trident (Fr) Wootton Bassett {GB}), runner-up in the G1 Prix Morny for Andre Fabre and the Coolmore partners, has been sold to continue his career in Hong Kong.

Bloodstock agent Jamie Piggott, who brokered the deal, told TDN, “We bought him for a seven-figure sum for Mr Ho and he will go to Caspar Fownes. Coolmore were brilliant to deal with. The horse is now in Newmarket and starts his quarantine on 10 February.”

Bred by trainer David Smaga and Marie-Benedicte Fougy, Trident was a €140,000 yearling at the Arqana Select Sale of 2020. He won on debut at ParisLongchamp over 1,300 metres, and went straight to stakes company for his next start, finishing third in the G3 Prix Cabourg in Deauville. A fortnight later he put in his best run to date when runner-up to Perfect Power (Ire) in the Morny, with his final start of the campaign also marking his first start outside France. At Newmarket he finished second to subsequent GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Modern Games (Ire) in the G3 Tattersalls S.

Piggott continued, “It's a nice opportunity to be able to fulfil an order for the third-highest-rated 2-year-old in France. He has the size and scope to win in Hong Kong and he has a wonderful temperament. Andre Fabre has done a great job with him. Given his size, to do what he's done at two, coming second to the likes of Modern Games, is quite something.”

The agent, who also rides out regularly in Newmarket, added, “He's at Longholes in Newmarket now until he goes into quarantine for Hong Kong. I've been riding him everyday there and he's a lovely, big rangey horse.

“I have a fair few connections in Hong Kong. It's a shame we can't get over there at the moment, but I think there is a resurgence in interest in European bloodstock there, and long may it last.”

Trident Takes Dead Aim On Tattersalls

Andre Fabre has long considered Newmarket to be a happy hunting ground and it is significant that the master of Chantilly is at the old “Headquarters” on Thursday for the G3 Tattersalls S. Thirty years ago, Tertian (Danzig) came for this specific race and duly landed the odds and this time it is Trident (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) who is lined up for the seven-furlong prize representing Messrs Smith, Magnier, Tabor and Westerberg. Runner-up in the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville Aug. 22, the bay can only improve over this longer trip on pedigree and could yet shape up into one of his handler's 2000 Guineas hopefuls come the spring.

“I see they had rain on Sunday at Newmarket, but it should have dried by now and in any case, whatever the ground is it won't bother him,” Fabre said. “He got a bump in the Morny just when he was quickening. The extra distance this time will be in his favour and he's going to run well. He's a very reliable colt.”

Godolphin's Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) comes in off a nursery handicap success at Doncaster's St Leger Festival Sept. 8 and trainer Charlie Appleby said, “Modern Games has a lovely, progressive profile and has done very little wrong to date. We have been pleased with him going into this and the testing seven at Newmarket should suit.” Prior to his Doncaster win, Modern Games was second to Manton Park Racing's Cresta (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) in a Leicester novice Aug. 8 and his trainer Martyn Meade said, “Obviously this is a step up, but he's in good form and is ready to take his chance. Andre Fabre's horse was obviously second in the Morny and you can't take that away from him, but you shouldn't be worried about one and we'll take him on.”

Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's Harrow (Ire) (El Kabeir) has won a York nursery Aug. 19 and Doncaster's Weatherbys Scientific £200,000 2-Y-O S. over 6 1/2 furlongs Sept. 9, where he impressed with his acceleration at the finish. Harry Herbert is hoping he can make his presence felt in this company. “Andrew [Balding] has always held the horse in high regard and with every race, he's taken a big step forward,” he said. “I think having won that valuable sales race at Doncaster, Andrew desperately wanted to move into black-type company, so we'll see. It's a big leap, as we know, taking on Andre Fabre's horse Trident but he's very tough and we need to see where we are in the big picture.”

Quick Suzy Goes For Prix Morny, BC Juvenile Turf Sprint Berth Sunday

Royal Ascot winner Quick Suzy (IRE) is set to take on 13 rivals in the 6-furlong Group 1 Darley Prix Morny at Deauville on Sunday. The Darley Prix Morny winner will receive an automatic berth into the $1 million Grade 2 Juvenile Turf Sprint through the international Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 84 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, California, on Nov. 5-6.

Owned by the Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Quick Suzy blitzed her rivals in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Ascot on June 16 and will be looking to emulate Campanelle (IRE) by completing the Queen Mary-Prix Morny double, which Lady Aurelia also achieved in 2016.

Quick Suzy is trained by Gavin Cromwell in Navan, Ireland. Cromwell commented, “Quick Suzy goes for the Prix Morny. She was entered in the Phoenix Stakes (G1) at the Curragh last week, but we gave her a break after Ascot and the race just came too soon after that break. Fillies have a very good record in the Prix Morny and, on top of that, Queen Mary winners have a great record in it too, so it looks the right race for her. It fits perfectly into her schedule too. Gary Carroll will ride and we're really looking forward to the race. She's in great form.”

The Richard Hannon-trained and Al Shaqab Racing-owned Armor (GB) won the Group 3 Markel Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood by 3 ¼ lengths and steps up to Group 1 company for the first time. The son of No Nay Never will be ridden by Patrick Dobbs.

The unbeaten Velocidad (GB) took out the Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes at the Curragh on his second start. Trained by Joseph O'Brien, the 2-year-old son of Gleneagles (IRE) will be ridden by Ryan Moore for the first time.

Asymmetric (IRE) is another Group 2 winner in the field. The son of Showcasing (GB) built on his second-place finish in the Group 2 Tattersalls July Stakes at Newmarket to win the Group 2 Unibet Richmond Stakes in his latest start. Runner-up that day at Goodwood in the Unibet Richmond Stakes was Khunan (GB). The son of Twilight Son (GB) is one of two runners in the race for trainer Richard Fahey, who also saddles Group 2 Norfolk Stakes winner Perfect Power (IRE). Hollie Doyle and Christophe Soumillon are booked to ride, respectively.

The French challenge is headed by the Andre Fabre-trained Trident (FR). Impressive on debut, Trident was narrowly beaten in the Group 3 Darley Prix de Cabourg over course and distance. He will be partnered with Mickael Barzalona.

As a part of the benefits of the Challenge series, the Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for the winner of the Darley Prix Morny to start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, which will be run at five furlongs over the Del Mar turf course. Breeders' Cup also will provide a travel allowance of $40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 25 to receive the rewards.
