“It Showcased The Thoroughbred In All Its Glory” – Treo Eile Show A Huge Success

Caoimhe Doherty, co-founder of Treo Eile, described the third running of the HRI Treo Eile Thoroughbred Classic–won by Charlie Swan and Kikki Curran–as a huge success.

Treo Eile was established in 2020 with the aim of increasing the retraining of ex-racehorses. Many stars, both equine and human, showcased their talents at the Christmas Show at the Emerald Equestrian Centre in Meath on Thursday, where 10 teams battled it out for bragging rights.

But it was Swan and young Curran, who completed a double clear round, who came out on top for team Camas Park/Summerhill. The competition featured some household names, including Robbie Power, Patrick Mullins, Norman Williamson, Rachael Blackmore, Rory Cleary, Katie Walsh, Gary Carroll, Jack Kennedy and Davy Russell.

HRI boss Suzanne Eade was on hand to present the winning riders with their prizes and Swan commented afterwards, “It was a big team effort. I'd just like to thank the sponsors for pulling this together. For these horses, it's something for them to do in their career after racing, and it's great.”

Doherty echoed the sentiments of Swan in thanking the sponsors and participants for making the event a huge success.

She said, “It went absolutely amazing, an incredible turnout. From owners, breeders and supporters, a huge thank you to all of our sponsors who gave so generously. A huge thank you as well to people who donated horses for the evening and thank you to everyone who travelled from Cork, Donegal and all around the country to be here. It was a brilliant night and really showcased the thoroughbred in all its glory–their versatility, adaptability and their performance. We are just so grateful and so thankful.”

Despite being launched just three years ago, Treo Eile has 600 former racehorses on its books, and Doherty says that Thursday's event shows how much the industry cares for the thoroughbred.

Doherty concluded, “We launched Treo Eile three years ago and we haven't looked back since. We are so lucky because we have no money but have been funded by the industry. Godolphin has been a major help and supported us from day one. So, too, have the EBF, the Foal Levy Committee and HRI.

“We have nearly 600 horses registered with Treo Eile. We started with zero. When you look at the quality of the jumping tonight, the amount of horses and the amount of people here, it just shows you how much the industry wants it and supports it. We are just so grateful.”

Thoroughbred Aftercare Charities Host Brainstorming Event In Newmarket

The thoroughbred aftercare charities in Ireland, France and Britain-Treo Eile, Au-Delà Des Pistes and Retraining of Racehorses-met earlier this month in Newmarket with the aim of bolstering the care racehorses receive upon retirement.

RoR managing director David Catlow, Au-Delà des Pistes executives Carole Desmetz and Mégane Martins and Vice President Alix Choppin, and Treo Eile executive Anne Connor and co-founder and director Caoimhe Doherty met with Godolphin's charities manager Penny Taylor and IFAR steering group member and Treo Eile co-director Diana Cooper, for the brainstorming session.

All three charities have proved efficient at establishing connections between racing and equestrian disciplines in order to provide increasingly diverse and secure outcomes for thoroughbreds as they embark on their second career following retirement from racing.

Their respective brands have become household names in the industry and actively contribute to raising awareness about retrained racehorses' versatility and outstanding athletic qualities for all equestrian sports.

The gathering was intended to set up a collaborative base for best practice exchange and a lobbying force to push for transnational topics of welfare and aftercare to be addressed by the respective racing authorities.

All three charities specifically agreed to combine forces on four issues that were identified as obstacles to aftercare becoming increasingly embedded within racing's objectives and commitments.

Caoimhe Doherty, co-founder and Director of Treo Eile commented, “With tripartite agreements in place for racing and breeding, it is a natural next step for England, France and Ireland to team up in their support for the aftercare of racehorses.

“We are very grateful for Godolphin's drive and commitment to the support of racehorses after racing, which encapsulates their vision and hosting of the inaugural meeting of representatives from Retraining of Racehorses, Au-Delà Des Pistes and Treo Eile. The sharing of our journeys to-date highlighted common areas of progress and concern. Open conversations addressing the present issue of the 'social licence' relating to our sport, the participation and responsibility of our stakeholders were mutually beneficial, given the varying years our organisations have been in existence.”

She added, “We were very fortunate to avail of Roly Owers, CEO of World Equine Welfare, expertise when discussing the subject of euthanasia. The passion for the welfare of racehorses within each organisation was very evident, as was the positivity to work.”

Stars On Show For Treo Eile Thoroughbred Classic

If it was racing stars you were looking for, the Treo Eile Thoroughbred Classic was where you could find them, as Rachael Blackmore, Robbie Power, and Charlie Swan turned out to support the event last Thursday night at the Emerald Equestrian Centre in County Kildare.

Treo Eile was set up to connect, support and promote the retraining of thoroughbreds and legends of the racetrack Tiger Roll, Douvan and the recently retired dual Gold Cup hero Al Boum Photo were all strutting their stuff on the evening.

A celebrity show jumping competition generated fierce competition and illustrated how racehorses can be retrained for other disciplines after their racing days are over.

There were 10 teams captained by leading lights of the weighroom and show jumping and eventing circles and the parade of thoroughbred champions was sponsored by Moyglare Stud.

The 'Jonbons team,' captained by leading amateur Aine O'Connor, whose riders finished with a zero fault score, took the Horse Racing Ireland Perpetual Cup and prizes that were sponsored by Connolly's Red Mills.

HRI's Director of Welfare, John Osborne commented, “This event brings all equestrian industries together and shows how versatile the thoroughbred is in terms of adjusting to a different lifestyle after racing and it's wonderful to see these horses still going strong 10 years later.”

O'Connor was joined by event riders Rachel O'Callaghan and Ian Cassells and pony rider Lucia Keane in victory while the Robbie Power-captained 'Lagoons team' claimed second spot.

Rachael Blackmore's 'team Honeys' took the yellow ribbon in third with all riders competing about retired and retrained racehorses.

A special appearance from Irish international show jumper, Jessica Burke, also added a new dimension to the night as she took Brendan McArdle on a course walk, explaining the technicalities of her craft.

Veteran jockey Charlie Swan, whose daughter Olivia rode a clear round on her former racehorse Clonakilty Bay, was delighted with the evening.

He said, “These horses are very intelligent and easy enough to retrain. It's a great crowd and there's a great buzz around. The more people that get into equine sport the better.”

Established as a not-for-profit in 2020, the Treo Eile project aims to encourage the retraining of ex-racehorses, once their racetrack careers are concluded.
