Godolphin Duo Pose Threat In Balanchine S.

You've heard of Creative Flair (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire})? How about Summer Romance (Ire) (Kingman {Ire}), Magic Lily (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), Poetic Charm (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) or Promising Run (Hard Spun)? What do they have in common? Godolphin, for one, and they are all the winning alums from the past five years of the G2 Ballanchine S. at Meydan Racecourse.

Either of the 4-year-old blue-clad torchbearers that are drawn into Friday's edition could carry on that tradition. Out of With The Moonlight (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and Tranquil Lady (Ire) (Australia {GB}), both of whom are trained by Charlie Appleby, the former will probably serve as the prima based on the European markets. Despite a last place in the 2022 G1 Epsom Oaks behind the winner, Tuesday (Ire) Galileo {Ire}) and her new stablemate, Tranquil Lady (sixth), the filly did find success in the GIII Saratoga Oaks later that summer. After an autumn break, she won the G2 Cape Verdi S. three weeks ago over this very turf course and will have the services of William Buick once more.

“With The Moonlight has come forward since the Cape Verdi and the step back up in distance is going to suit,” said Appleby. “She has a penalty to carry, but is clear on ratings and has already won at the track this season. She looks the one they all have to beat.”

Tranquil Lady is obviously no understudy. Lest we forget, she was a 2.7-million gns Tattersalls December purchase by Godolphin, and even though the former Joseph O'Brien trainee has not been seen since she won the G3 Prix de Flore S. at Saint-Cloud on Oct. 22, she's no nap, as James Doyle gets the call for the first time.

“This will be her first start for us, so we are on a slight learning curve, but we are confident that she will run a nice race,” the trainer said. “We will potentially see her at her best over further and this will be our first opportunity to get a handle on her ahead of the forthcoming season.”

With six other longshots at the bar for this year's Balanchine, it could be Lyrical Poetry (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) or even Katoucha (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}) that could rise to the occasion. If not, it will be Godolphin once more that poses in the winner's enclosure on Friday.

Well-Related Tranquil Lady Reels in 2.7M at Tatts

Anthony Stroud battled to 2.7 million gns to secure Lot 1909, Group 3 scorer Tranquil Lady (Australia [GB}) at Tattersalls December Tuesday. The 3-year-old filly is a sister to the globe-trotting State of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), winner of Royal Ascot's G1 Prince of Wales's, G1 Prix Ganay, G1 Cox Plate and GI Saratoga Derby Invitational S. Offered by The Castlebridge Consignment, the winner of Naas' G3 Blue Wind S. hails from the family of US champion 2 and 3-year-old filly It's In the Air.

Cazoo Oaks: Where Did They Come From?

This year's G1 Cazoo Oaks is an up-to-scratch renewal. Aidan O'Brien runs four, with Ryan Moore electing to ride Irish 1000 Guineas runner-up Tuesday, while John and Thady Gosden are double-handed with short-priced favourite Emily Upjohn and Nashwa. Emily Upjohn cost just 60,000gns as a yearling while Tom Clover's Rogue Millennium, unbeaten in both of her starts, is another bargain buy that will line up in this year's Classic after she changed hands to join her current connections for just 35,000gns. We took a look at the story behind each of the 11 fillies that will step forward in the Epsom Classic on Friday afternoon and find out where they all came from.

Pedigree Notes: Her dam Was stormed to Oaks glory 10 years ago under Seamie Heffernan. Was is from the family of G1 Derby victor New Approach (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and is a sister to stakes winners Douglas MacArthur (Ire), Amhran Na Bhfiann (Ire) and the dual Group 3-placed Al Naamah (Ire), as well as a half-sister to listed winner Janood (Ire) (Medicean {GB}). Concert Hall is followed by an unraced 2-year-old sister and a filly foal by Wootton Bassett (GB) this year.

Sales History: The heavy favourite for this year's Oaks will provide many people with reason to dream, as she was knocked down for just 60,000gns during Book 2 of the Tattersalls Yearling Sale in October 2020.
Pedigree Notes: Emily Upjohn has a pedigree that belies that 60,000gns price tag. The race favourite is a half-sister to two winners, while her dam Hidden Brief is a winning sister to Hazarista (Ire) and a half-sister to Hazariya (Ire) (Xaar {GB}), both of whom were black-type performers for John Oxx. More pertinently, Hazariya is the dam of dual Derby winner Harzand (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). Hidden Brief has a yearling filly by Capella Sansevero (GB).

Pedigree Notes: Out of the G3 Cumberland Lodge S. heroine Hawaafez, who is a great granddaughter of Wedding Bouquet (GB) (Kings Lake), Rogue Millennium is a sister to the winning Khatm (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Wedding Bouquet herself is a dual Grade/Group 3 victress, who was third in the G1 Phoenix S. and is a half-sister to Irish Horse of the Year Generous (Ire) (Caerleon). Hawaafez was also dispersed by Shadwell and caught the eye of Blandford Bloodstock for 14,000gns at the Tattersalls February Mixed Sale. She has an unraced 2-year-old filly by Awtaad (Ire) named Naomi Lapaglia (GB) and a yearling filly by Kingman (GB).

Imagine is a proven producer of high-class horses, six of which have achieved black-type, including G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Horatio Nelson (Ire) (Danehill) and Van Gogh, a full-brother to The Algarve, who won the G1 Criterium International.

Pedigree Notes: The family has taken off in recent times, largely down to globetrotting star State Of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), who has won three Group 1 races on three different continents. Tranquil Lady's unraced juvenile half-sister Double Scoop (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) was sold for €180,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale last year. Their dam also has a Sea The Stars (GB) filly foal at foot and was recently sold to Juddmonte in foal to Frankel (GB).

Gosden Duo Anchor An Even Dozen Left in Cazoo Oaks Reckoning

At the six-day stage, 12 fillies are set to line up in the 1 1/2-mile G1 Cazoo Oaks on Friday, June 3. As expected, Rogue Millennium (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) was supplemented for the Epsom Downs feature, where she will face the John and Thady Gosden favourites 'TDN Rising Star' Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and Blue Diamond Stud's Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Aidan O'Brien fields a quartet of fillies in the hunt for his 10th Oaks title and they are led by the dual Classic-placed Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Also taking part, are Teme Valley's G3 Blue Wind S. victress Tranquil Lady (Ire) (Australia {GB}); Kirsten Rausing's duo of listed winner Kawida (GB) (Sir Percy {GB}), who was third in the G3 Prix Cleopatre and the Group 3-placed Ching Shih (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}); and Godolphin and Charlie Appleby's listed winner With The Moonlight (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) among others.
