Registration Open For Track Super Field Day

Registration for Track Superintendent Field Day at Gulfstream Park June 12-14 is now open. The Field Day brings together track superintendents and staff to discuss best practices relating to track maintenance, safety and operational issues for both racing and training facilities.

The event began on a small scale at the old Philadelphia Park and has since blossomed into one of the industry's largest and most important events that focuses on track safety.

With the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) set to begin this summer, part of the Field Day agenda will include a panel on ensuring that track superintendents are prepared for the hefty reporting requirements under the Act. The event is free of charge to track superintendents and staff, who must cover their own transportation and accommodations. A discounted rate will be made available at the Hampton Inn Hallandale Beach.

“Track Superintendent Field Day always provides extensive educational information and networking, so we are proud to support this for the betterment of the industry,” said Steve Andersen of Equine Equipment. “The panels and speakers we bring together are instrumental in cultivating the superintendents of tomorrow and in building the skillsets of current supers. We urge tracks to send their key people to demonstrate a willingness to invest in their future and get the annual training from the oldest track superintendent group in North America.”

To register, call (877) 905-0004 or email tracksuper@gmail.com. Additional information regarding registration and the agenda will soon be posted at www.tracksupers.com.

Gulfstream Hosts Track Superintendent Day in ’22

The 2022 edition of Track Superintendent Field Day will be held June 12-14 at Gulfstream in Hallandale Beach, Florida. This will mark the first time the event, which debuted in 2002 at Philadelphia Park (now Parx Racing), has been held at Gulfstream. The gathering brings together track superintendents and staff to discuss best practices related to track maintenance, safety and operational issues for racing and training facilities.

“We are thrilled to be heading to Florida in 2022,” said Roy Smith, founder of the event and track superintendent at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino. “Gulfstream Park is a world-class facility with terrific racing surfaces, so it will serve as a great host for track superintendents from around North America and beyond.”

In addition to the educational aspect, Track Superintendent Field Day has a charity aspect, and the 2021 meeting at Indiana Grand provided $500 donations to both the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund and New Vocations.

“The PDJF and New Vocations are both tremendously important to our industry, so we are happy to do our part in helping to support them with these donations,” said Smith. “We had a great event this year and being able to give back to the industry makes it even better.”

More information regarding registration and the agenda will be forthcoming at www.tracksupers.com.

Track Superintendent’s Field Day Returns to Indiana Grand

Following a two-year hiatus, the 19th annual Track Superintendent Field Day is set to return Sunday, June 13 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The event kicks off with a reception at the Holiday Inn Express in Shelbyville followed by two days of conference activity at Indiana Grand June 14-15.

Moderated by Nancy Holthus, on-air paddock analyst at Indiana Grand, numerous industry experts will be scattered throughout the two-day event regarding surface and soil sciences, the latest in equipment used to maintain track surfaces, agronomic practices, and other tactical safety measures to assist track superintendents with their day-to-day routines.

“This year, we have over 70 tracks represented at the event,” said the event's founder Roy Smith, Indiana Grand's track superintendent since 2015. “Due to continued travel restrictions, we won't have anyone internationally like we generally do, but we will still have a good representation from tracks across North America.”

Indiana Grand also hosted the 2016 renewal of the event.

Open to the public, several equipment displays will be trackside during live racing June 14-15.

Organizers have announced the agenda for the gathering that brings together track superintendents and staff to discuss best practices related to track maintenance, safety and operational issues for racing and training facilities.

“Track Supers Field Day has been growing just about every year, and we've seen even more interest this year as the industry continues to focus on the vital issues of track maintenance and safety,” said Roy Smith, founder of the event and track superintendent at Indiana Grand. “This year we've tried to expand the scope of the meeting to include more attendees from training centers and farms with training tracks, and so far we've had a very good response. We are still accepting registrations, so we encourage anyone who works with track surfaces to join us.”

An optional golf event will be held June 13, and then the meetings will begin on June 14 with workshops all day and a trackside BBQ that night with cigars and live music. Meetings will continue on the morning of June 15, followed by a keynote address at lunch and then an afternoon of racing at Indiana Grand.
