Registration Now Open For Track Superintendent Field Day At Gulfstream

Registration is now open for Track Superintendent Field Day on June 12-14 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. The gathering brings together track superintendents and staff to discuss best practices related to track maintenance, safety and operational issues for racing and training facilities.

“We are thrilled to be heading to Florida in 2022,” said Roy Smith, founder of the event and track superintendent at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. “Gulfstream Park is a world-class facility with terrific racing surfaces.”

Track Superintendent Field Day started as a small meeting at Philadelphia Park (now Parx Racing) in 2002 and since then has grown to become one of the racing industry's largest and most important events focusing on track safety.

New regulations under the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) are set to begin later this year, so the Field Day agenda will include a panel on ensuring that superintendents are ready for the hefty reporting requirements. This will also fulfill four hours of continuing education.

Track Superintendents Field Day is not-for-profit 501(c)(3) entity, and registration is free for superintendents and their staff, supported solely by the sponsors of this event, including title sponsor Equine Equipment.

The only expenses for track superintendents and staff are transportation and a discounted hotel rate at the Hampton Inn Hallandale Beach as the host hotel.

“My team and I look forward to welcoming everyone to Gulfstream Park,” said Tony Martinez Jr., track superintendent at the South Florida track.

“Track Superintendent Field Day always provides extensive educational information and networking, so we are proud to support this for the betterment of the industry,” said Steve Andersen of Equine Equipment. “The panels and speakers we bring together are instrumental in cultivating the superintendents of tomorrow and in building the skillsets of current supers. We urge tracks to send their key people to demonstrate a willingness to invest in their future and get the annual training from the oldest track superintendent group in North America.”

To register, call 877-905-0004 or email tracksupers@gmail.com.

More information regarding registration and the agenda will be forthcoming at www.tracksupers.com.

Track Superintendent Field Day To Be Hosted At Gulfstream Park In 2022

The 2022 edition of Track Superintendent Field Day will be held June 12-14 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. This will mark the first time the event, which debuted in 2002 at Philadelphia Park (now Parx Racing), has been held at Gulfstream Park. The gathering brings together track superintendents and staff to discuss best practices related to track maintenance, safety and operational issues for racing and training facilities.

“We are thrilled to be heading to Florida in 2022,” said Roy Smith, founder of the event and track superintendent at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino. “Gulfstream Park is a world-class facility with terrific racing surfaces, so it will serve as a great host for track superintendents from around North America and beyond.”

“The team at Gulfstream Park and 1/ST RACING is truly looking forward to hosting the Superintendent Field Day for the first time. Being committed to the safety of all our racing participants, we appreciate working together to continue elevating standards of safe racing operations through events exactly like this one. We hope to host more of these events at our 1/ST PROPERTIES in the future,” said Aidan Butler, Chief Operating Officer, 1/ST RACING.

Thanks to the support of sponsors, including title sponsor Equine Equipment, the event again will offer free registration to all track superintendents and staff, with the only expenses being transportation and a discounted hotel rate.

“I always look forward to attending this meeting and getting the chance to share ideas and information with other track supers, so I'm excited to welcome everyone to Gulfstream Park next year,” said Tony Martinez Jr., track superintendent at the South Florida track.

We urge tracks to send their key people to demonstrate willingness to invest in their future.”

In addition to the educational aspect, Track Superintendent Field Day has a charity aspect, and the 2021 meeting at Indiana Grand provided $500 donations to both the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund and New Vocations.

“The PDJF and New Vocations are both tremendously important to our industry, so we are happy to do our part in helping to support them with these donations,” said Smith. “We had a great event this year and being able to give back to the industry makes it even better.”

Over 70 Tracks Will Be Represented At Next Week’s Track Superintendent Field Day

After missing last season due to COVID-19, the 19th annual Track Superintendent Field Day is set to begin Sunday, June 13 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The event kicks off with a reception at the Holiday Inn Express in Shelbyville followed by two full days of conference activity at Indiana Grand Monday, June 14 and Tuesday, June 15.

Moderated by Nancy Holthus, on-air paddock analyst at Indiana Grand, numerous industry experts will be scattered throughout the two-day event regarding surface and soil sciences, the latest in equipment used to maintain track surfaces, agronomic practices, and other tactical safety measures to assist track superintendents with their day to day routines.

“This year, we have over 70 tracks represented at the event,” said Roy Smith. “Due to continued travel restrictions, we won't have anyone internationally like we generally do, but we will still have a good representation from tracks across North America. It's a great time for us all to get together and share ideas and learn about the latest technology and equipment out there.”

Smith, who has been Indiana Grand's track superintendent since 2015 and now resides in Morristown, Ind., is the founder of the Track Superintendent's Field Day conference. This is the second time the event, which travels to different racetracks each season, has been hosted by Indiana Grand. The event made a stop in Indiana in 2016.

Several equipment displays will be trackside during live racing Monday, June 14 and Tuesday, June 15. The displays are open to the public.

The 19th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing is now in progress and continues through Monday, Nov. 8. Live racing is conducted at 2:25 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, with first post on Thursday set at 3:25 p.m. A special Indiana Champions Day highlighting the state's top Thoroughbred and Quarter Horses will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at noon. More information about the 2021 racing season is available at www.caesars.com/indiana-grand.

Track Superintendents Field Day Scheduled For June 14-15 At Indiana Grand

The organizers of the Track Superintendents Field Day are pleased to announce that the 20th edition of the event will be held June 14-15, 2021, at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino. The event brings together track superintendents and staff annually to discuss best practices related to track maintenance, safety and operational issues for racing and training facilities worldwide.

“Because Track Supers Field Day is the only annual gathering for the hard-working men and women who help ensure the safety of our horses and riders, we felt it was important to have the event this year after being forced to cancel in 2020 due to COVID-19,” said Roy Smith, founder of the event and track superintendent at Indiana Grand. “We are proud to do our part to contribute to the greater good of the industry by helping put on this event at Indiana Grand, and we look forward to hosting attendees for two days of education, idea-sharing and comradery.”

The event was originally scheduled to be held at Remington Park in Oklahoma City but was shifted to Indiana Grand for a central location that would allow more attendees to drive.

“We sincerely thank Remington Park for everything they did in the original planning of this event, and we hope to be able to hold a Track Supers Field Day there in the near future,” added Smith.

“Caesars Racing is dedicated to safety at all of our facilities, so hosting this year's event was an easy decision for us,” stated Joe Morris, Senior Vice President of Racing for Caesars.

“Thanks to the generosity of numerous sponsors, Track Supers Field Day invites track superintendents and staff to attend with no registration fee,” said Steve Andersen of Equine Equipment, the event's title sponsor. “Attendees are only responsible for their transportation expenses, and a discounted hotel rate will be available soon. Sunday is a travel day this year, and meetings begin Monday morning. We'll have more details to release soon.”

More than 100 attendees convened at the 2019 event held at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races in West Virginia.

“For many years I never attended, and I didn't go the first 10 years or so,” said Doug Bowling, track superintendent at Charles Town. “And then when I started attending, I saw how valuable the networking and friendships are. The classes are always helpful, but you get to put faces with names and develop relationships, and then you have the ability to call someone when you might need a little help. It's one of the greatest tools we have as track supers.”

More information will be coming regarding registration, schedule and speakers at www.tracksupers.com.
