Track Phantom Banks Derby Points In Gun Runner S.

Track Phantom (Quality Road) had 10 points deposited into his Road to the Kentucky Derby account by winning Saturday's featured Gun Runner S. at Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

After a pair of good efforts to try and break his maiden in October at Churchill Downs, the bay got his picture taken with a front-running score by 4 3/4 lengths under the Twin Spires Nov. 25.

As a 9-2 shot here, the colt came out firing from his outside post and dueled into the first turn with GISP Next Level (Vino Rosso). With the battle for the lead continuing up the backstretch, Track Phantom finally got the best of his rival before the far turn, clearly had more to give at the top of the lane and outlasted a late-effort by Snead (Nyquist), as 'TDN Rising Star' Nash (Medaglia d'Oro) finished third.

“It's impressive that both of his [Track Phantom] two turn races have been victories, and it was a good field today,” said trainer Steve Asmussen. “I actually thought they went too fast in the middle, you know, 46 4/5 here in a two-turn race, you don't see horses see it out very often. He's obviously a very good horse who has some room to physically develop and we have him right where want to be at this stage of his career.”

Out of an extended female family which includes MGSW Prayer for Relief (Jump Start), the winner is his dam's second offspring to make the races after O'Conner Sunset (Curlin). An $825,000 purchase by Breeze Easy at the '18 Fasig-Tipton Fall Mixed Sale, Miss Sunset is also responsible for yearling colt Crystal Pearl (Curlin), who went for $1.1 million during Keeneland September to Lauren Carlisle. Track Phantom's dam also foaled a colt by Quality Road Mar. 3 and was bred to Flightline for next year.

Sunday’s Racing Insights: Pair Of Well-Bred Colts Battle On Debut At Churchill On Sunday

7th-CD, $120K, Msw, 2yo, 1m, 3:50 p.m.
At Churchill Downs Sunday, drawn to the extreme outside is BLOWN COVER (Gun Runner) who will make his first start for an ownership group which includes Spendthrift Farm and Gandharvi Racing. A $650,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, the dark bay colt, bred by Machmer Hall and trained by Brad Cox, is the second offspring to make the races out of a dam who is a half-sister to GII Oaklawn H. hero Cyber Secret (Broken Vow).

Also debuting here is Track Phantom (Quality Road), another alum from that same sale who went for $500,000 to L and N Racing, Clark Brewster, and Jerry Caroom, with breeder Breeze Easy retaining a share. Out of GII Lexus Raven Run S. heroine Miss Sunset (Into Mischief), the Steve Asmussen trainee's yearling half-sister by Curlin just sold at Keeneland September for $1.1 million to Lauren Carlisle. Another Sunday Churchill maiden race under the same conditions includes Catching Freedom (Constitution). The $575,000 Keeneland September purchase bred by WinStar Farm, bought by Albaugh Family Stables, and trained by Brad Cox is out of GISP Catch My Drift (Pioneerof the Nile), who also produced SP Strava (Into Mischief) and GIII Peter Pan S. runner-up Bishops Bay (Uncle Mo).

Making the post just to his outside, we find Tis Charming (Omaha Beach). The dark bay colt trained by Ken McPeek who sold for $250,000 during Keeneland September is out of Derby Eve (Tiznow), who is a full-sister to GI Travers S. victor Colonel John.  TJCIS PPS

Finally, over at rain-soaked Aqueduct, Spendalot (More Than Ready) will debut for CHP Racing. The Chad Brown trainee initially went for $240,000 to Cavalier Bloodstock during Keeneland November before selling to agent Mike Ryan for $650,000 in the same ring as a yearling. The gray filly is a full-sister to GII Wonder Again S. winner Consumer Spending. TJCIS PPS
