Tuel New Track Announcer At Evangeline

Rob Tuel has been named the full-time track announcer at Evangeline Downs, officials at the track announced Wednesday. Tuel succeeds Michael Chamberlain, who spent six years behind the mic at the Opelousas, Louisiana, track.

Tuel's racecalling career began in 2004 at Eureka Downs in Kansas, describing both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse action. He has also called races in his home state of Nebraska at FairPlay Park, Lincoln Race Course and Atokad Park.

“I am honored and thrilled to be selected as the new track announcer at Evangeline Downs,” said Tuel. “It has been a lifelong dream to the announcer at such a prestigious racetrack and I cannot wait to begin.”

Tuel will also handicap each live racing program at Evangeline and will be the host of the track's daily simulcast show.

“We are very exciting to have Rob join our racing team here at Evangeline Downs,” said Carol Core, vice president and general manager. “He brings plenty of excitement and enthusiasm to the position of track announcer and I'm sure he will be well received by race fans both locally and across the nation via simulcast.”

Racing at Evangeline is scheduled Wednesday through Thursday from Apr. 28 through Sept. 18. First post each night is 5:30 p.m. Central time.

Rob Tuel Named Track Announcer At Evangeline Downs

Evangeline Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel has announced the hiring of Rob Tuel as its new full-time track announcer replacing Michael Chamberlain, who had spent the last six years behind the microphone in Opelousas, Louisiana.

Tuel's race calling experience began in 2004 at Eureka Downs in Kansas, where he called both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. Over the years he has also called races in his home state of Nebraska at FairPlay Park, Lincoln Race Course and Atokad Park.

Tuel will also have the responsibility of handicapping each program at Evangeline Downs while also hosting the track's daily simulcast show. His experience in front of the camera along with a lifetime of handicapping horse races will provide fans with valuable insights and plenty of winning picks nightly. From 2010 – 2012 he served as paddock host and handicapper at Lincoln Race Course while working with Chamberlain, who was the announcer at that time.

Prairie Meadows Brings Bobby Neuman Back To The Announcer’s Booth

Accomplished track announcer Bobby Neuman, whose resume includes successful stints at Calder Race Course in Florida and Los Alamitos Race Course in California, will call the races at Prairie Meadows Casino, Racetrack, and Hotel during the 84-day 2021 live horse racing season that begins on Friday, April 30 and runs through Saturday, Sept. 25.

“I'm really excited about getting back into the booth,” Neuman said by phone after his hiring. “Calling the races has always been my passion and I believe I will bring an accurate, entertaining, and professional approach to the fans watching Prairie Meadows racing on-track, in the simulcast outlets, and at home.”

“I see the horses, the jockeys, the trainers, and the owners as the stars of the show,” Neuman added. “It's the job of a good announcer to put the spotlight on their accomplishments on the race track.”

Neuman earned a degree in Business Administration through the University of Arizona Race Track Industry Program before embarking on what has become a well-traveled career as a track announcer.

“I started calling at the Arizona fairs in the early 90s.” he recalled. “I was at Thistledown for three years, at Calder for 15 years, I called harness races at The Red Mile and Pompano Park, I had a fill-in stint at Churchill Downs, and I was in the booth at Los Alamitos for four Thoroughbred meets through 2019.”

Neuman will step into his role at Prairie Meadows on Friday, May 7 after fulfilling his commitment to work Kentucky Oaks Friday and Kentucky Derby Saturday at Churchill Downs for Horse Racing Radio Network.

“I'm grateful that Prairie Meadows Vice President of Racing Derron Heldt offered me the opportunity to call the races in Iowa this season,” added Neuman. “And I am appreciative that he has given his approval for me to honor my Derby week commitment to HRRN.”

Former Prairie Meadows track announcer Ken Miller will handle the race calling duties for the first two days of the 2021 season on Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1.

Tampa Announcer Richard Grunder to Retire

Richard Grunder, the track announcer at Tampa Bay Downs for the past 37 years, is hanging up his binoculars after the May 2 card.

Citing health concerns, the 68-year-old has chosen to retire after a lifetime spent in the sport. He is believed to have called in the vicinity of 37,000 races at Tampa Bay Downs and is currently the longest-tenured announcer at any racetrack in the country.

“My goal a few years back was to try to go until I was 70, but I've got a medical situation I need to stay on top of and some related stress issues that led me to realize it's time,” Grunder said. “I was in the hospital a few weeks ago on a Wednesday and barely got out in time to call the first race, and I don't get up those stairs to the press box as fast as I used to.

“I am going to miss the camaraderie and the people, especially the three stewards who work next door to my booth. It's been a great environment to work in. But I have no regrets at all. My father [the late Dean Grunder, a railroad worker and owner-trainer in Nebraska and New Mexico] told me once I would be a really rich man if I was able to go to a job I liked every day.

“By that account, I'm a millionaire many times over.”

Grunder will remain active in the sport, working as a jockey's agent at Canterbury Park in Minnesota this spring and summer for Alonso Quinonez and Israel Hernandez. He plans to travel extensively with his wife of 48 years, Diana, visit other racetracks and spend more time with son Chad and his wife Erica, who live in El Dorado, Kan.

“I love to fish, and we're 100 miles from Lake Okeechobee. I've never been a bass fisherman, but that's something I plan to get into,” Grunder said. “And I'm looking forward to returning to Oaklawn Park. I haven't been there since I worked rubbing horses for [trainer] Red Payne in 1974.”
