Awesome Slew Colt Sets Furlong Mark at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Tuesday

TIMONIUM, MD – The three-day under-tack show ahead of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale began on a picture-perfect day in Timonium Tuesday with a colt by Awesome Slew (hip 91) working the bullet furlong of :10 flat early in the first of the day's seven sets. The juvenile is consigned by Tom McCrocklin, who purchased him on behalf of Michael Sucher's Champion Equine for $150,000 at last year's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's October Yearling Sale.

“He's a very fast horse,” McCrocklin said Tuesday. “I was not surprised to see him work like that. He showed up here and breezed very well.”

The bay colt is out of Cash Reserve (Distorted Humor) and is a half-brother to stakes-placed Reckling (Dialed In) and Campy Cash (Race Day).

“I literally recall telling Michael Sucher that I thought he was the best horse in the [OBS] sale,” McCrocklin said.

Asked if he was surprised by the colt's final price last fall, which made him the most expensive of eight yearlings by his sire to sell in 2022, McCrocklin said, “It was just a very difficult year to buy yearlings. If you had a nice physical horse there was plenty of money out there to buy them. So I wasn't terribly surprised. And it kind of felt like we were going to buy the horse–it didn't feel like a huge stretch. It wasn't one of those 'it was my last bid' stories.”

With the absence of the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale from the calendar this year, the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale and the inaugural Midlantic June sale next month in Timonium are the only major juvenile auctions to feature works over a dirt track. The appeal of that surface led McCrocklin to take a 33-horse consignment to Maryland.

“I think buyers like it because they race on dirt predominately,” McCrocklin explained. “I think it gives them a little more confidence. You saw from the times today, it takes a very fast horse to go :10 flat here. Where at OBS on the synthetic racetrack, it's not unusual to see :10 flats all over the place.”

Of the 10 juveniles to work a quarter-mile Tuesday, a colt by Flameaway (hip 15, video) consigned by LG, agent, and a colt by Nyquist (hip 126, video) consigned by Top Line Sales shared the bullet time of :21 3/5.

Top Line Sales also sent out a juvenile by Lookin at Lucky (hip 89) to share the session's second-fastest furlong time. The New York-bred colt, a homebred for Top Line's Torie Gladwell and Jordan Wycoff, turned in a flashy :10 1/5 work during the day's second set.

A bay filly by City of Light (hip 174), who is a half-sister to graded winner The Tabulator (Dialed In), powered through her :10 1/5 work for Steve Venosa's SGV Thoroughbreds.

Becky Thomas's Sequel Bloodstock, which was responsible, not just for last year's $3.55-million May sale topper, but also for GI Kentucky Derby winner Mage (Good Magic), sent out a filly by Munnings (hip 160) who worked the furlong in :10 1/5 in the day's third set.

A pair of juveniles from the first crop of Maximus Mischief shared the second-fastest furlong time Tuesday, with Bryan Ford Training Stable sending out a filly (hip 69, video) and Cary Frommer sending out a colt (hip 125, video) by the graded stakes winner.

The day's six :10 1/5 works also included a filly by Uncle Mo (hip 186). Consigned by Pick View, LLC, the bay is out of Gabriellestoblame (Blame), a half-sister to GI Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist (Uncle Mo). She was bred by Bridlewood Farm.

The under-tack show continues through Thursday with sessions beginning each day at 8 a.m. The Midlantic May sale will be held next Monday and Tuesday. Bidding commences at 11 a.m. for both sessions.

Frosted Colt, Nyquist Filly Fastest at OBS Tuesday

A colt by Frosted (hip 449) matched the fastest furlong time of the week so far, while a filly by Nyquist (hip 484) tied the fastest quarter-mile breeze with workouts during the third session of the under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training Tuesday in Central Florida.

Hip 449 worked a furlong in :9 3/5 shortly after 8:30 a.m. for the Longoria Training and Sales consignment. A $50,000 Keeneland September acquisition, the youngster was one of a group of yearlings purchased last year in the first-time partnership of Texas businessman Paul Neatherlin and consignor Jesse Longoria.

“I was very excited about the way the colt worked,” said Neatherlin. “He worked phenomenal, I thought. I was really pleased.”

The bay colt is out of Handwoven (Indian Charlie), a full-sister to stakes-placed Auspicious and a half to graded-placed Flatter Than Me (Flatter).

“He was just a real nice colt with a big hip and a good, sloping shoulder and a huge walk,” Neatherlin, who began pinhooking some 15 years ago with his uncle, the late trainer Mike Neatherlin, said of the colt's appeal last September. “Jesse and I both loved the colt and when we went up to buy him, Jesse told me, 'No matter what this horse brings, don't let him go. Don't miss out on him.' We thought we had a bargain at $50,000.”

Some four hours after the bullet breeze, Longoria and Neatherlin teamed up with another yearling purchase when a colt by Omaha Beach (hip 500) worked a furlong in :10 flat.

Neatherlin, who is vice president of sales for Platinum Pipe Rentals, said he pinhooks six to eight horses a year. He had recently been partnering with Robert Brewer. Among their success was a Cross Traffic filly purchased for $18,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September sale who sold to Bill Parcells's August Dawn Farm for $150,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May sale. Now named Maple Leaf Mel, the filly is undefeated in three starts and a two-time stakes winner.

Brewer and Neatherlin also purchased a Midnight Storm filly for $27,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcased and sold her following a :9 4/5 work for $240,000 at the following year's OBS March sale.

Despite their success, Neatherlin found himself looking for a new pinhooking partner heading into the yearling sales last fall.

“Robert Brewer decided he didn't want to do it this year,” Neatherlin said. “He suggested Jesse and I love Jesse. I've known him for 30 years and he's a good friend of mine. And I know he's a great horseman.”

The partnership got off to a good start at the OBS March sale last month when selling a filly by Vino Rosso (hip 579) for $185,000. The bay had been acquired for $55,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

Neatherlin currently has just one horse in training, a filly by Accelerate who RNA'd at the March sale.

“The Accelerate filly caught that big headwind in March and worked :10 2/5, but looked really good doing it,” Neatherlin said. “I turned down $30,000 after the sale and just kept her and I will run her. I've run a lot of horses in my life, but now I am mainly into pinhooking.”

Nyquist Filly Breaks Out of the Pack

Anticipating a spate of fast furlong workers over a tight track Tuesday morning, Jimbo and Torie Gladwell of Top Line Sales hoped their filly by Nyquist (hip 484) would distinguish herself from the pack with a quarter-mile breeze. The filly duly delivered a bullet drill in :20 3/5 right at the start of Tuesday's session as temperatures hovered around a chilly 51 degrees.

“Talking about it this morning, we thought there might be a handful of fast eighth-mile breezes, :9 4/5s, because we thought the track was going to be nice and tight,” explained Torie Gladwell. “So we wanted to separate this filly from all those :9 4/5s. That's why we decided to go a quarter with her.”

Of the end result, Gladwell said, “She prepped really fast and we knew she would have a shot of going the :20 3/5. That wasn't too much of a surprise with her. But we are really happy with it. She showed up.”

The bay filly is out of stakes winner Hi Holiday (Harlan's Holiday), a half-sister to graded winner Dr B (Liam's Map). She was purchased by the Gladwells for $100,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale and Torie Gladwell credited her mother-in-law Martha for landing on the yearling.

Top Line Sales sent out a pair of fillies to work quarter-miles Tuesday. In addition to hip 484, they also sent out a filly by Liam's Map (hip 518) who covered the distance in :20 4/5.

“They are almost complete opposites,” Gladwell said of the two speedy juveniles. “The Nyquist filly is an average-sized filly and tries really hard. The Liam's Map filly is a big filly and it looks like she's just galloping, floating across the track. When the breeze rider jumped off, he said, 'Oh my gosh. I didn't think I was going that fast. She must have a monster stride.' I think she does have a big ground-covering stride. She is a really laid back, cool filly.”

The under-tack show continues through Saturday with sessions beginning daily at 8 a.m. The Spring sale will be held next Tuesday through Friday. Bidding begins each day at 10:30 a.m.

Zedan Goes to $2 million for Good Magic Colt at OBS

A colt by Good Magic, who worked a co-bullet furlong in :9 3/5 last week, lit up the sales ring at OBS Tuesday when selling to Amr Zedan for $2 million. Trainer Bob Baffert was on the phone with Zedan, while bloodstock agent Donato Lanni handled the bidding from the press box. The juvenile was consigned by Torie and Jimbo Gladwell's Top Line Sales. The Gladwell family purchased him for $190,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

Good Magic Colt Swiftest at OBS

A colt by Good Magic (hip 546) turned in the fastest furlong through three sessions of the four-day under-tack show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training when covering the distance in :9 3/5 Thursday in Central Florida. The bay juvenile, out of Hoppa (Uncle Mo), is consigned by Top Line Sales.

“He had prepped in :10 flat over here, so we knew if the track was back to its original condition, that he had every shot of going :9 4/5,” said Top Line's Torie Gladwell. “We really didn't expect the :9 3/5, but we knew he was extremely fast and he's a very efficient mover and tries really hard anytime we turn him loose.”

The colt, part of the Gladwell family's pinhooking partnership, was purchased for $190,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

“A lot of people liked this horse at the sale,” Gladwell said. “There were quite a few people that we knew were bidding on him besides us. He is a little light on page and he still brought a lot of money even with Good Magic not being really hot yet.”

Since the September sale, Good Magic has been represented by graded stakes winners Curly Jack, Blazing Sevens and Dubyuhnell, while his son Reincarnate, winner of the GIII Sham S. in January, is on the Derby trail following a third-place finish in the GII Rebel S. last month.

Top Line was also represented Thursday by a first-crop son of Maximus Mischief (hip 421) who worked a furlong in :9 4/5. The graded-stakes winning sire, who has 24 juveniles catalogued in the March sale, also had a filly (hip 456) work the furlong in :9 4/5 for the Dark Star Thoroughbreds consignment Thursday.

“We have quite a few of those,” Gladwell said of Maximus Mischief. “He's really stamping them, the four or five of them that we have. They have the big white flashy blaze, which I love. They are good sized and put together well. The thing that I love about them the most is their personalities. They are pretty chill, laid back Into Mischief-type horses who just go out and do their job. They have a very strong hind leg and good muscle.”

With three days in the book and one session still to go, Gladwell was asked to rate the consistency of the OBS surface this week.

“The first day was probably, I want to say, the best day for buyers to sit up there and watch horses go,” she said. “It was fair all day long. The second day, they thought it was going to be too fast because of the cold weather that came in that night, so they actually slowed it down for the first page. And there were a lot of aggravated consignors. They tightened it back up for the second and third pages. The first-page horses yesterday didn't really get a fair shake, but I think all of the people sitting up there watching had a pretty good idea. They could tell the horses were trying a little bit harder, laboring almost, on the first page. Today, they didn't change anything from yesterday after they started tightening it back up and there was definitely a huge difference today. It was maybe a little too fast. But if the track is fast and the horses come back good, then I don't care. Our horses are all coming back really good.”

Four horses shared Thursday's bullet quarter-mile time of :20 4/5: a filly by Goldencents (hip 469, video) consigned by Galvan Brothers Equine; a filly by Arrogate (hip 526, video) consigned by Tom McCrocklin; a colt by Valiant Minister (hip 531, video) consigned by Golden Rock Thoroughbreds; and a filly by Munnings (hip 558, video), also consigned by McCrocklin.

Asked if she expected demand for horses to remain high during next week's first juvenile sale of the season, Gladwell said, “The viewing stands are full, the parking lot is full. We are showing from 2 o'clock until almost 4. We have been showing non-stop, so I think it's going to be a great sale.”

The final session of the under-tack show gets underway at 8 a.m. Friday. The March sale will be held next Monday through Wednesday with bidding commencing each day at 11 a.m.
