NYTHA Hires Marie Kizenko as Communications Manager

Marie Kizenko has joined the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association team as communications manager. A racing industry veteran, Kizenko served as a senior editor for 14 years at the Thoroughbred Daily News before working as a freelance writer and communications consultant. She returned to racing on a full-time basis in 2019 and most recently served as stakes coordinator for the Maryland Jockey Club.

“This is a fascinating time for the racing industry in New York,” Kizenko said. “NYTHA's core missions of benevolence, equine welfare, and safeguarding the interests of its members are vital to me. I have been involved in many facets of racing, and am thrilled to have this opportunity to ensure its future growth.”

“We are very excited to have Marie join us here at NYTHA,” NYTHA President Joe Appelbaum said. “Her industry knowledge is well-rounded, and she is able to offer a unique perspective as someone who has worked in journalism and publicity as well as a racing office.”

Thoroughbred Makeover will Include Broodmare Division

The Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) will include a pilot program for broodmares to compete in the 2023 Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America. Recently retired broodmares will compete alongside traditional entrants in all ten offered disciplines, but will be recognized separately and have a separate $10,000 in prize money.

“As the Thoroughbred Makeover has made a proven impact on the population of horses retiring from racing, we've gotten an increasing call in recent years for a channel for Thoroughbred broodmares who are ready for their third career,” said RRP executive director Kirsten Green. “Although the needs of this group are somewhat different from the original Makeover eligibility, the principal is still the same: horses who have received the investment of quality care and training are more likely to find lasting homes. We're excited to offer a modified division to make a contribution to that outcome.”

To be eligible for the new division, broodmares must be registered with The Jockey Club (TJC), have foaled or been bred in 2021 or after, have one lifetime start or published work, and may not have had prior shows or competitions. Broodmares will not be subject to the 15-ride limit. Complete rules will be available when the 2023 rulebook is published next month at TheRRP.org.

The new broodmare division is made possible with a grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Additional support from farms and regional breeders groups is anticipated.

NY Sire Majestic City Succumbs to Laminitis

Irish Hill & Dutchess Views Stallions LLC's Majestic City (City Zip) was euthanized Tuesday, Nov. 8, due to the complications of laminitis. The 13-year-old is the sire of four small crops of racing age, which include 34 individual winners and Belmont's 2021 Iroquois S. winner The Important One.

“Majestic City will be sorely missed by myself and the entire team,” said Irish Hill & Dutchess Views manager Bill Leak. “He was a horse you could measure others against and only hope they can come close to his quality.”

Majestic City's wins during his five-year racing career included the GIII Lone Star Park H. and the GIII Hollywood Juvenile Championship S. He also placed in five additional graded races, including the GI Dixiana Breeders' Futurity and the GI Del Mar Futurity.

Triple GISW Jack Christopher Retired to Ashford

'TDN Rising Star' and three-time Grade I winner Jack Christopher (Munnings–Rushin No Blushin, by Half Ours) has been retired from racing and will stand in 2023 alongside his sire at Coolmore's Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky. His introductory fee will be $45,000.

“We are delighted to have Jack Christopher now here at Ashford standing alongside his sire Munnings,” said Coolmore's Dermot Ryan. “He's a striking horse with great presence and a lovely temperament. Horses like him are what makes racing exciting to watch.”

Owned by the partnership of Jim Bakke, Gerald Isbister, Coolmore Stud, and Peter M. Brant, Jack Christopher debuted with an 8 3/4-length win at Saratoga at two and was immediately tabbed a 'Rising Star' off the performance. Sent next to the GI Champagne S. at Belmont, he scored by daylight again off 8-5 odds. Made the 9-5 morning-line favorite for last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Del Mar before being scratched the day prior to the race, Jack Christopher underwent a procedure and returned this spring on Derby Day with a comeback victory in the GII Pat Day Mile S. A blowout 10-length score in the GI Woody Stephens S. followed before his lone career loss–a third to Cyberknife (Gun Runner) in the GI Haskell S. in his first time stretching out–and finally a return to the winner's circle in his last start, the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial S. Jack Christopher retires with a record of 6-5-0-1 and earnings of $1,216,400. He was unbeaten around one turn.

“Jack Christopher was an exceptional talent,” said trainer Chad Brown. “I've never had a dirt horse with such brilliance. He never disappointed us in a workout or a race and was just a pleasure to train.”

From the family of Running Stag (Cozzene)–who was a MGSW in the U.S. and a GSW in France, in addition to being GISP in the U.S. and G1SP in Hong Kong–Jack Christopher is out of a half-sister to MGISW and sire Street Boss (Street Cry {Ire}).
