Grade I winner Defunded, who skipped a shot at the Breeders' Cup, kept it rolling with a popular score in the GIII Native Diver S. Sunday at Del Mar.

A second-out graduate last March at Santa Anita, the gelding was fourth in both the GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby and GIII Pat Day Mile S. before running second in the GIII Affirmed S. and GIII Los Alamitos Derby. Scoring a pair of blowout allowance/optional claiming victories, he was a hard-fought runner-up in the GI Hollywood Gold Cup S. May 30, but finished off the board in the GII San Diego H. and GII Pat O'Brien S. here this summer.

Going wire to wire to capture the GI Awesome Again S. last out Oct. 1 in Arcadia, the chestnut was knocked down to odds-on in this spot and broke awkwardly. Soon rushing up to press the pace three wide, Defunded moved into second past a :23.62 quarter and drew alongside the longshot pacesetter through a sharp half in :46.41. Poking his head in front five-sixteenths out, the favorite kicked clear into the lane and bounded away to score as much the best, well ahead of stablemate Azul Coast.

“He came away from there a little bit slow, but I wasn't concerned. This horse doesn't need to be in front,” said winning rider Edwin Maldonado. “He's won from off the pace before. I rode him with confidence all the way. On the [far] turn he wanted to lean on the horse inside us, but I got him going straight and it all worked out from there.”

“Edwin said Defunded was kind of wanting to sit back and when that happens and they sit back when the gate opens, then you're going the wrong way,” added Jimmy Barnes, assistant to winning trainer Bob Baffert. “Luckily they were going slow enough he was able to recover and get back in a good position. He's always had talent. It's just that he's been a little aggressive in the paddock on us at times. But he went through the paddock good, he went to the gate good so maybe we've got him straightened out.”

Pedigree Notes:

One of 22 stakes winners, eight graded stakes winners and three Grade I winners for Darby Dan's Dialed In, Defunded is the third black-type performer out of her four-time stakes-placed dam, a daughter of a SW Wind Tunnel. That mare is a half to GSW Reunited (Dixie Union), who produced MGISW Code of Honor (Noble Mission {GB}). Bought by the winner's breeder for $37,000 at Keeneland November in 2016, Wind Caper has an unraced 3-year-old Maclean's Music filly, an unraced juvenile Lookin At Lucky filly named Capital Lights and a yearling full-sister to the winner named Ringy Dingy who sold to Oracle Bloodstock for $200,000 at Fasig-Tipton October.

Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal’s Jed Cohen Passes Away

California's Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal–the nom de course of the Cohen family–lost the stable founder and the Cohen family patriarch, Jed Cohen, Sunday, Nov. 27. Cohen passed away in Del Mar at the age of 89 after battling health issues for the past few years.

Among the top horses raced by the Cohens–sometimes in partnership–were GISWs Janet (GB) (Emperor Jones), River Boyne (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), and Dr. Schivel (Violence). The stable most recently took the leading owner title at the 2022 Santa Anita fall and winter meets and is currently leading the Del Mar meet. Their most recent win came in the final race Saturday at Del Mar in an optional allowance with Percolate (Ire) (Sir Percy {GB}). The operation often bought ready-made racehorses in Europe and had success in bringing them to compete stateside.

According to his son, Tim Cohen, Jed Cohen had been involved in horse racing for about 61 years and was brought to the sport through his own father's pocket-change forays in the Big Apple.

“His father loved horse racing,” said Tim. “His father and three other people would pool 50 cents together to make a $2 bet in New York.”

A backbone of the California racing industry for decades, Jed Cohen's “greatest achievement,” said Tim, was the “the achievement of others. He was always immensely happy with everyone associated in the victories. His greatest victory was the joy of others.”

That, “and he just had this genuine love of people and horses,” said Tim. “We never wanted the last race out of a horse. We always wanted them treated the right way. If there was a problem, we stopped. He never wanted a horse to run if it wasn't exactly right.”

Former trainer Darrell Vienna, who enjoyed tremendous success with horses racing in Cohen's colors, concurs.

“He was the perfect owner. If a horse needed rest, he absolutely insisted on it. His attitude was, 'let's do the best by the horse,'” said Vienna, who estimated that he had known Cohen for more than 30 years.

“He was just a really special person,” Vienna said. “After I retired from training, we kept in close contact. We spoke regularly about racing, about life and politics.”

Though an astute handicapper, Cohen kept it small–like his own father. “A big bet for him would be $20. He just loved analyzing races,” said Vienna. “I'll miss having access to his wisdom and his kindness. He was an exceptional listener–he was always paying attention. He was just a unique, extraordinary person. He's a big loss to horse racing but an even bigger loss to anyone who knew him.”

Cohen is survived by his wife, Bobbie; as well as his children Tim, Mark, and Linda; and two grandsons.

Constitution 2YO Sweetlou’sgotaces Breaks Maiden in Aqueduct’s Tepin

After recording the highest Beyer Speed Figure in the field (85) when runner-up by just a nose last out over this course in a six-furlong maiden special weight Nov. 4, Sweetlou'sgotaces (Constitution–Kayce Lu, by Lonhro {Aus}) broke her maiden in Aqueduct's Tepin S. when stretched to a mile for the first time. She was also a narrow second on debut Sept. 1 at the Spa and off the board Oct. 8 in the GIII Matron S. at the Belmont at Aqueduct meet.

In the Tepin, Sweetlou'sgotaces broke from the rail and was sent up with the first flight to duel briefly with Private Credit (Into Mischief) from the inside. She wrenched away the lead from that one and had the clear advantage, getting her early splits in :24.76 and :49.23 with her ears pricked. Private Credit made another run at her on the turn, but the dark bay opened up despite staying belatedly on her incorrect lead and bounded home four lengths in front of a closing Smokie Eyes.

“I just let Joel [Rosario] do his thing, give him the keys to the car and decide, but I felt pretty good going into the first turn,” said winning trainer Ray Handal. “She went 24 and 3 and then you see all the kickback, so it's nice to be getting the fresh part of the ground and dictating things. She was just traveling so well all the way around there. It felt pretty good to watch.”

A $60,000 OBS 2-year-old this spring for Handal Racing, Sweetlou'sgotaces has a yearling half-brother by Into Mischief who sold at the recent Keeneland September yearling sale for $210,000 to Lynwood Stable. Her dam, a half to GSW & MGISP Comical (Into Mischief), was barren this year but was bred back to Maclean's Music for next term. She hails from the immediate family of MGISW Colonel John (Tiznow).

Hard Spun Colt Earns ‘Rising Star’ Laurels at Del Mar

Edge Racing and Muir Hut Stables' Spun Intended (c, 2, Hard Spun–Flora Dora, by First Dude) ran too good to lose his Oct. 30 debut at Santa Anita, just failing to overcome a brutal trip when dropping a half-length decision to the well-meant Fort Warren (Curlin). The latter earned the 'TDN Rising Star' nod for the win and Saturday afternoon, Spun Intended followed suit with a 'Rising Star'-worthy performance of his own where the surf meets the turf.

Spun Intended was off slowly in that Oct. 30 bow and was last of the octet early before improving on the turn while conceding stacks of ground. He knuckled down determinedly in the final furlong and was gaining inches on Fort Warren, but the wire came a few strides too soon. The chestnut had done his part since with a pair of solid morning trials and never looked like losing Saturday.

Sent off at odds of 4-5 that represented an overlay, the $100,000 Keeneland September yearling and $125,000 OBS March breezer (:21 1/5) showed good pace from gate four and advanced without being asked for much by Mike Smith to take up the running after an opening couple of furlongs in :21.95. Hugging the fence into the final five-sixteenths of a mile, having cut the half-mile in a slick :44.20, Spun Intended was a bit tardy in switching his leads, but carried an unassailable advantage into the final panel and trotted in to score by 6 1/2 emphatic lengths.

Spun Intended is an 11th 'TDN Rising Star' for Hard Spun and is the first foal out of Flora Dora, winner of the 2015 My Dear Girl S. of the Florida Stallion Series and the 2016 Busanda S. She was also third to Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro) in that year's GI CCA Oaks. A half-sister to SW Lindisfarne (City Zip), Flora Dora is the dam of a yearling Nyquist colt that was bought back on a bid of $185,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. Her foal of 2022 is a filly by Gun Runner and she was most recently bred to Candy Ride (Arg).
