RRP’s First Footing Silent Auction Open Through Jan. 6

The Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) announced today its First Footing Silent Auction, sponsored by OCD Pellets, is open for bidding starting at 9:00 a.m. (EST) on Dec. 30 and runs through January 6, 2023 at 11 p.m. (EST).

Named for a Scottish tradition, the First-Foot is the first person to enter the home of a household on New Year's Day and is seen as a harbinger of good fortune for the coming year.

This year's auction features horse shoes worn by some of racing's most elite stars, including Justify, Monomoy Girl and Medina Spirit, plus a signed boot worn by jockey Javier Castellano during the Saratoga Meet.

The First Footing Silent Auction will kick-start 2023 fundraising for the RRP and support its mission to increase demand for Thoroughbreds in careers after racing.

Bobby Miller Passes Away

Bobby Miller, who was the longtime manager at Ro Parra's Millennium Farm before being named the farm's vice chairman, passed away Thursday following a long battle with cancer.

“Bobby made a huge difference in all of our lives,” said Parra. “He was just a kind man and really one of a kind. When I hired him 20 years ago, I was an absentee owner and I think I had 200 head of horses at the time. And he really brought an incredible amount of professionalism and order to running the farm. But it was really less about that and more about his character, more about his ethics, and more about his warmth. He was a great man.”

Miller, who earned a degree in agriculture from the University of Kentucky, spent 18 years as farm manager at Walmac International. He joined Millennium Farm as manager in 2006 and was named the farm's vice chairman in 2016.

“I'm devastated about Bobby's passing,” said Buckland Sales' Zach Madden, who worked with Miller at Millennium Farm. “He was a legend, mentor and friend. I'm going to miss him every day. He would do anything for anybody. I'm just thinking about his family during this time.”

Funeral arrangements are still pending.

Schosberg Makes Matching TAA Donation

Rick Schosberg celebrated his retirement from training by making a pledge to match all donations up to $1,000 to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance's Holiday Giving Campaign Friday.  After 35 years, 5,973 starts, and over $38 million in earnings, the New York horseman saddled his final runner Dec. 29 at Aqueduct.

“Funding aftercare should be a top priority for every industry participant,” said Schosberg. “The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance does a great job vetting aftercare organizations to ensure the safety of retired Thoroughbreds, but the industry must envision more unique and creative funding mechanisms to generate more resources for the retirees that have so gallantly kept the sport going. I hope you'll join me in donating today to the TAA's year-end giving campaign.”

The TAA's Holiday Giving Campaign, which began Nov. 29, is scheduled to concluded New Year's Eve.

To learn more and donate to the TAA's Holiday Giving campaign, visit: ThoroughbredAftercare.org/HolidayCampaign. Donations may be made by texting DONATE to 56651.
