Reinhardt Named HISA Assistant General Counsel

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) has announced that Samuel Reinhardt will be joining the organization as Assistant General Counsel, effective today.

A native Kentuckian, Reinhardt joins HISA from the law firm Stoll Keenon Ogden PLLC (SKO) where he litigated a variety of equine-related matters, including cases regarding the sale of horses, claims asserted against Thoroughbred auction houses, and disputes over wagering anomalies. He has been recognized on numerous occasions for his legal work by the peer-reviewed publication Best Lawyers.

“Sam's experience with state and federal equine industry litigation as well as his passion for the advancement of Thoroughbred racing makes him a great addition to our team,” HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus said. “We look forward to having Sam join us as we continue to implement important safety, operational, and integrity standards for our sport across the country.”

Reinhardt will work alongside Outside General Counsel John Roach to support the organization's day-to-day operations regarding the safety and integrity of horse racing.

Vella Joins Woodbine as Horse People Liason

Sovereign Award and Queen's Plate-winning trainer Dan Vella has joined Woodbine as Horse People Liaison. Vella will be a point of contact for owners and trainers as it relates to opportunities and feedback regarding race conditions, track surface matters, backstretch maintenance, equine safety and race day logistics.

“Dan is a highly regarded figure on our backstretch that has his finger on the pulse of our racing community,” Jim Lawson, Woodbine Entertainment CEO, said. “Having the ability to add someone like Dan, who has spent over 50 years on our backstretch and enjoyed success at our highest levels, is a big boost for our stakeholder relationships.”

Vella's first stakes victory came in 1985 with Bert James (Dom Alaric {Fr}) in the Sir Barton Stakes. He won his first Queen's Plate with Basqueian (Bounding Basque) in 1994 and a second in 2012 with Strait of Dover (English Channel). He was honored with the Sovereign Award as Canada's outstanding trainer in 1994 and 1995. Overall his runners won over 800 races for $39 million in earnings.

“I am so excited to have this opportunity to work for Woodbine and continue to be involved in the industry and sport that has given me so much,” Vella said.

Vella will begin his new role on Apr. 1.

Acton Appointed Sam Houston Racing Secretary

Veteran racing official Mike Acton has been hired as Sam Houston Race Park's track's Racing Secretary. He assumed the role on Feb. 3 and will serve in the same capacity at Retama Park and Zia Park during their respective meets this year.

“Mike is an experienced racing professional who has deep connections in our region that will serve the industry well,” Sam Houston Vice President and General Manager Dwight Berube said.

Acton most recently served as the Racing Secretary at both Remington Park and Lone Star Park.

“I am going to miss my co-workers at Remington and Lone Star,” Acton said. “But I am humbled to work with great people at Sam Houston and Retama and am excited about meeting everyone at Zia Park.”

The Sam Houston Thoroughbred meet continues through Apr. 8.

Gulfstream to Offer Royal Ascot Juvenile Qualifiers

The winners of Gulfstream Park's $100,000 Royal Palm Juvenile S. and $100,000 Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies S., both set for May 13, each will earn an automatic entry into one of Royal Ascot's six 2-year-old races. The two five-furlong turf events will be the first-ever U.S. automatic qualifiers for a race at Royal Ascot.

Additionally, the connections will receive a $25,000 equine travel stipend.

“1/ST RACING is thrilled to announce this new global partnership with Ascot Racecourse,” Aidan Butler, Chief Executive Officer, 1/ST Racing & Gaming, said. “Gulfstream Park is honored to host two automatic qualifiers to challenge the world's best at this year's Royal Ascot meeting,”.

Royal Ascot will be held this year from Jun. 20-24.

“We're thrilled to be partnering with 1/ST RACING on this initiative and building on the already solid foundations of success that American juveniles have at Royal Ascot. Hopefully the incentives will attract a quality field and we look forward to welcoming their connections at Ascot,” Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs, Ascot Racecourse, said.

The six juvenile races during the June Royal Ascot meeting are:
June 20
-The G2 Coventry, 6 furlongs
June 21
-The G2 Queen Mary, 5 furlongs, fillies
-The Windsor Castle, 5 furlongs, listed
June 22
-The G2 Norfolk, five furlongs
June 23
-The G3 Albany, 6 furlongs, fillies
June 24
-The Chesham Stakes, listed

Nominations for the Royal Palm Juvenile and Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies close Apr. 30.
